Preikestolen, or Pulpit Rock, has been named one of the world’s most spectacular scenic viewpoints by both CNN Go and Lonely Planet. On an annual basis, the iconic rock formation welcomes more visitors than any other trekking-destination in Norway. In 2018, approximately 300,000 hikers made their way up to the imposing plateau. From atop the 604-meter-high cliff, the panoramic view of the Lysefjord is one of the most impressive Fjord-Norway has to offer.

Our Preikestolen Classic Hike is a guided, afternoon tour that is offered on a daily basis for up to 10 participants. The hike begins at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge (Preikestolen Fjellstue) at 12:30pm. We provide free parking if you come by car. If desired, guests may add an optional transportation package that includes transfers between Stavanger and the lodge. Hiking boots and waterproof pants/jacket may also be rented for an additional charge.

After meeting you at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge, your guide will lead you up the trail through shifting terrain. When conditions allow, the guide may navigate along an alternative route. Because it is not found on any maps, the alternative trail avoids the crowds that typically descend the mountain during the early afternoon, and therefore offers guests a more secluded experience.

Along the way, while passing lakes, forests, and bogs, you’ll stop at numerous vantage points, all of which offer great views of the surrounding mountains. You’ll also be given ample opportunities to catch your breath and snap photos of the spectacular nature around you. After 2-3 hours of hiking, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of some of the most dramatic scenery Fjord-Norway has to offer. From atop the 604-meter-high cliff, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Lysefjord and its surrounding mountains.

By hiking in the afternoon, you have a better chance of experiencing Preikestolen alongside fewer people. In addition, the shadows created by afternoon sunlight make for better photo opportunities. After a snack and warm beverage at the cliff’s edge, your guide will lead to back down to the trailhead, which will take about 2 hours.

The hike ends at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge at approximately 17:30 (5:30 pm)

Hiking | ~5 hours (including breaks)
Transportation Stavanger – Trailhead |
~1.5 hours (each way)
