Join Outdoorlife Norway on an autumn hike to Kjerag, and witness the magic of the season’s shifting colors and Norway’s crisp and cool mountain air. Hike on trails that have recently been upgraded by Nepalese Sherpas, who used local stones and made overcoming the final (and steepest) slope a little easier. Though the hike to Kjerag is filled with breath-taking views of the Lysefjord, the trip’s highlight for many is standing atop Kjerag’s famous boulder.

Your journey begins when your professional guide picks you up in Stavanger city-center (see above for specific pick-up times and locations). While being transported to the hiking trail, which takes about 2.5 hours, you’ll pass through a variety of dramatic landscapes including mountains, fjords, and bright green valleys. The guide will navigate over a mountain pass through the municipality of Sirdal. You’ll pass through a barren, glacier scoured landscape that many experience as being moon-like.

You’ll begin your hike at a trail-head that’s known as the Eagle’s Nest – which one can speculate got its name because it sits a lofty 640 meters above sea level. During Autumn, weather conditions can be unstable. As needed, the guide will adjust your equipment (ice spikes, etc.) to match the weather conditions. The hike to Kjerag is relatively demanding: you’ll trek 11 kilometers (round-trip) with an ascent of 800 meters in 5.5 kilometer. During the 2.5-hour hike to the boulder, you’ll encounter 3 periods of steep climbing interspersed with 2 shallow valleys. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of the village of Lysebotn, which is situated at the head of the Lysefjord. The final 2 kilometers leading up to the Kjerag boulder are relatively flat and will allow you to focus more on Norway’s beautiful wilderness.

Once you reach the edge of the mountain’s plateau, while standing on a 1000-meter-high cliff, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the 42-kilometer-long Lysefjord. Cliff-side, you’ll have plenty of time to rest and enjoy your packed lunch. If you’re among the brave, you’ll have the opportunity to stand atop the Kjerag boulder.

After the lunch break, your guide will lead you back down to the Eagle’s Nest, which takes about 2 hours. After the hike, you’ll be driven through 26 hairpin turns along the (one and only!) road to the village of Lysebotn at the head of the Lysefjord. Here, you’ll board a speed-ferry.* The ferry will set-off navigating under steep mountain walls towering hundreds of meters above the fjord. The cruise will transport you further out the Lysefjord where you will pass waterfalls, abandoned farms, and the famous Preikestolen cliff, which towers 604 meters above sea-level.

*On Saturdays, and between Oct. 14 – 18, the speed ferry does not run. On these dates, you will be driven around the mountains in both directions.

I did the Preikestolen and Kjerag hike with Erland and Jeff from Outdoorlife Norway. They were amazing guides. They make sure you enjoy your day trip with them and that you are safe while doing so. My first trip with Erland to the Preikestolen was interesting because the first part of it was in the dark (sunrise hike). He stopped frequently to take some cool night photos and include some titbits of information about trolls and other mythical creatures of the night. Jeff was my guide up Kjerag. He was very concerned about our safety on that day, because there was a weather warning out for hiking on the mountain that day. Down side was that the weather was very cold and ranged from windy to ice rain to snowy, but he kept us updated and made sure we are all comfortable as we went up. Special shout out to Jeff for warming my hands at the top, I could barely move my fingers. Make sure you buy some waterproof gloves. The ones the company provide are just basic ones. Both guides were good conversationalists and by the end of the day, I felt like I made a new friend. I really enjoyed going on the hikes with this company. It is a small company and they take the time to answer your emails if you should have any questions. I highly recommend using them, especially if you’re going at the end of summer like I did. The weather is unpredictable and can be down right dangerous, especially on Kjerag.

Did two hikes with this company, the Kjerag one was great, our guide was very nice and the cruise to Lynsefjord was astonishing. The second one was Preikestolen Sunrise, the view we could see from the top was worth all the effort, I totally recommend this company for hiking tours in Norway if you go solo travel like I did

Amazing day!

Krejag hike was amazing. Jeff, our guide was brilliant. Funny, knowledgeable, kept a great pace and provided us with well timed snacks and hot drinks!! The hike up the mountain is challenging but well worth it.
Pre-trip communication was spot on as were timings for pick up / drop off etc. We did two trips with Ourdoor life Norway and both were excellent and exceeded all our expectations. Don’t hesitate to book your trip with these guys – they are fantastic.

Preikestolen and Kjerag Boulder

We undertook the 2 hikes in 2 days. Both were absolutely amazing.
Kjerag was more difficult in very windy conditions, but our guide-Erland-was excellent. Not only is he an outstanding guide but he also has a great sense of humour. We had loads of fun.
We did the sunrise hike to Preikestolen with Josh, who was also a great guide. It was such a great experience to have a tranquil walk up & then be rewarded with a beautiful sunrise over the most spectacular scenery- and no one else around!!

We would highly recommend Outdoorlife Norway. They were professional, reliable, supportive & encouraging!

Thanks for the fantastic memories!!

“Guided tour is the only way to do this hike, our guide Jeff was great!”

A fabulous hike, well organised and led by a lively, fun, knowledgeable guide, Jeff. He made the day wonderful from start to finish and helped us all the way. I would highly recommend a guide as they know the terrain and they get to know your ability quickly. We had an absolutely awesome and laughter filled day!

Great hiking to Kjerag an Preikestolen

I loved the tour to Kjerag and Preikestolen made on Nov 7th and 8th. The company is quite responsible and with a very varied list of activities. From the beginning they always answered all my questions in the shortest time. The reservation process is quite simple on the website. Pickup from the agreed places is very punctual and with very comfortable vehicles. During the tour our guide not only showed us the way to Kjerag / Preikestolen, also he showed great passion for his work and admiration for nature, we learned a lot, even about Norwegian culture. Another important fact is that the guide did not limit himself to showing us the traditional way, during the returning he also showed and took us by other alternative ways in which other sites of interest can be appreciated as a plus of the already known stones. The amazing thing about the company is that they are the only ones to offer “out of season” tours, that is, in autumn and winter. The tour also includes drinks and snacks. I recommend that you hire the photo package and also, if you go outside of summer and do not have enough equipment such as gloves, hats, pants, etc. you must rent the equipment offered by the company.

When you think you can only do it once, your guide made you think about you will come back again

Booking tours with Outdoorlife Norway was the best decision I could have made for my trip to Norway a week ago. I went on tours of both Kjerag and Preikestolen: I was surprised to learn how young and small the company was considering the professionalism of the guides.

I went to Kjerag with the guide who originally from Italy (I can’t spell his name, will call him Mr.P), he was very kind and accommodating. Kjerag was my first hike, the weather and my jetlag seemed to conspire against me to keep me from completing the hike, but with his encouragement I was able to make it to the top and even get a photo on top of the wedged stone! This is an experience I have been anticipating for years and I was very excited to finally make it. I certainly couldn’t have made it alone and so am very grateful for the encouragement and help I received on my way up.

I took the Preikestolen trip with Erlend (who I called Allen on the hike), a Norwegian local who surprised me with his perfect English, and even more with his pronunciation of my Chinese name. We had pleasant conversation on the way: he’s a charismatic person who makes one feel comfortable and his hiking knowledge ensured we would have a successful trip. We were lucky to see different color clouds on the trip and the pictures Erlend took were excellent, I’ve received many compliments for them.

For Future tourists:

I would recommend a tour to both Kjerag and Preikestolen to anyone, especially folks who are relatively active and live in the city. It’s a breathtaking trip and refreshing for anyone feeling trapped in the concrete jungle.

I would recommend Outdoorlife Norway to anyone, whether you’re traveling alone or with a group. Their professional guides and well-planned trips take the stress out of the trip so that you can focus on having fun and enjoying the beautiful scenery that Norway provides.

Don’t underestimate the importance of the appropriate clothing when you’re hiking, specifically footwear. I had the option to use boots from the rental package I purchased from Outoorlife Norway, but instead chose to use my own and found them not to work as well as the boots that the other woman had (using those provided by the company). Luckily, Mr. P did a great job of guiding me down slippery surfaces. For my trip to Preikestolen, I learned my lesson and used the rented hiking boots: they were perfect for the job.

I’ve read reviews online that says these are fast-paced hikes, and it’s true. It’s important that the guide keep the pace so that the tour can make it through the hike and ensure a timely return to the ferry and so that the group will make it back before it gets too dark. I wouldn’t want to get stuck navigating down slippery slopes on a dark evening! It’s important to use daylight to do so.

Despite this, the guides were helpful and when group members would lag behind (doing so myself more than once) they provide encouragement and ensure that one doesn’t fall too far behind. It’s very important to evaluate one’s own physical condition and be honest – this is definitely a hike for decently healthy people.

For business:

As a Chinese native, I noticed that the Chinese language portion of the website omitted some important information. I would suggest you include the following: “*On Saturdays, and between Oct 15 – 19, the express ferry does not run and we will drive around the mountains.” I imagine some tourists may prefer to have an experience on the ferry, so this would be important. Once I saw this information on the English version of the site, I planned around it so that I would be able to utilize the ferry.

Finally, I think it would be excellent to be able to have an electronic option to tip the guides. I ran into an issue where I didn’t bring enough cash with me to tip and felt bad that I was not able to as the guides did an excellent job. I think this would be an extremely convenient option for tourists, as access to cash in a foreign country can sometimes be a challenge.

I hope the Outdoorlife Norway is continuing growing and stay the #1 in the area.

I enjoyed my trip very much – I wish you the best, from New York!

Great Experience without the crowds

Hi myself and my fiancé are just back from our hike.
The weather was not ideal(windy and constant drizzle) making for tricky hiking conditions however we were prepared and motivated to proceed with the hike with group off four.
We enjoyed the style of Johan our guide who would give us tips and information at the various stops en route and at the boulder. The pace was steady and we did not take long breaks but this was not an issue as we preferred to keep trekking on.
The trail was challenging but worthwhile for the views of the Fjord and hard granite landscape.
All in all we enjoyed our experience and would recommend others to do the guided hike.

This was such an unreal and amazing trip to Kjeragbolten and have such an awesome guide made it that much better! It started with an early morning pickup from my hotel by Johannes. The hike is about 2 hours away and having the pickup was a big plus. Johannes was a cool guy with lots of knowledge of the area and Norway. He let us get some Zzzs in before we got to the base of the mountain. Once there he checked our gear to make sure we were good to go. You definitely want to make sure you have the right gear for this trip. The weather can be cruel and punishing and you don’t want to freeze or hike soaked from the rain. Johannes went over safety and what to expect from the hike. From the start this hike is tough not a walk in the park. As we hiked Johannes would check on us to make sure we were good. It was about 3 hours up to the rock. Once we got there Johannes went over the proper way to get on the rock. After some awesome pics and light lunch with a delicious drink he had brought along we started our decent. It was just as tough going down. I felt safe having Johannes there helping and sharing some great knowledge/tips. If you want a memorable experience with a professional I really recommend hiring Outdoor Life Norway for your hikes. It has been an experience of a lifetime and I can’t thank Johannes and his company for providing such a time.

We did the Kjerag and Preikestolen hike with Johannes and Erlend respectively. Both guides were incredibly knowledgeable and very safety oriented not just towards the clients but also other people on the trail. The pick-up was perfectly on-time from your designated pick-up location (as accurate as a Swiss watch!). The admin staff was incredibly lovely, knowledgable and responsive. Any questions were requests were attended to promptly. We really enjoyed both our hikes and would return to use their services again. Thanks!

We did the very last hike to Kjerag for this year! I think we were quite lucky with the weather for this time. There were no people around and we had the whole view just for ourselves! I really enjoyed the hike and Johannes is a very good guide. I would definitely recommend Outdoorlife Norway.

Trip was brilliant. Last day of the season, challenging hike but worth it for the views from the top! Didn’t get to stand on kjerag but didn’t mind as it was very icy! Our guide Christopher was great, provided crampons and yummy blackcurrent tea, if you get him as your guide ask him about his funny stories

This tour is really great, Johannes is a very good guide. This hiking was very challenging because of the weather but Johannes did everything to make it happen for our group. Also Hendrick at the parking lot is very funny and helpful!!! Totally recommend it, but do it when it’s sunny 🙂

Just do this! Bucket list, adventure goal- whatever you want to call it. Kjerag hike fills the bill. So grateful to Johannes as guide and Andrea in office for rebooking when weather canceled our plans. Grateful to have found the website.

My friend and I went on the hike to Kjerag and absolutely loved every minute of it. The guide (Johannes) was very professional, giving us safety briefings and tips along the way. He was easy going and friendly making the day really enjoyable. We were lucky there weren’t many people at the rock and it was a beautiful day. This hike was a good challenge for someone who is moderately fit. Would definitely book with this company again.

Johannes (owner/guide) was our guide leading me and another American, and what an experience it was. Our hike was up to Kjerag boulder and although it was rated as difficult, Johannes guided us through different climbs that made our going more efficient and easier. He was supportive of our different skill levels and explained where we were, and how long it would take to get at the top. At the boulder, he gave us a treat and took our photos. He was also full of stories and knew a lot about Norwegian culture and was also interested in ourselves, which made for a pleasant journey to and from the site. In the very last 10 minutes of the journey, I had the unfortunate accident of slipping which resulted in a pretty bad, but not serious, cut on my hand; Johannes offered first aid and bandaged me up like a pro. I would recommend this guy and this tour 100% it made my trip to Norway spectacular!

I can’t say enough good things about this trip! I honestly didn’t think I was going to make it up Kjerag but Johannes was amazing in showing us how to hike and climb safely. Not only was he informative but also the nicest person. He took great action shots, had lots of encouragement and guidance, and yummy currant juice for us at the top! Overall if you are thinking about going up Kjerag I would highly recommend. Also the hike itself is very challenging. I’m of moderate fitness level but don’t do a lot of up/down hiking so this was quite the challenge. Thankfully Johannes kept safety in mind the whole way. Absolutely amazing!

I just returned from my hike to Kjerag and I wanted to tell everyone what an absolutely AWESOME time I had. I also wanted to express my appreciation for our guide Johannes. He did a phenomenal job! He was very professional, knowledgeable, helpful, and encouraging. It’s obvious that Johannes love the outdoors and he did everything possible to make this trip a fantastic and safe experience. The route on this hike may be long and difficult at times, but I got to see a lot of Kjerag and experience much of its quiet and majestic beauty. To say the least, this was the first trip I had taken where I left with a sense of accomplishment. It was the experience of a lifetime.

I spent this weekend in Stavanger and hiked Kjerag on Sat and Pulpit Rock on Sun. I highly recommend both hikes. Kjerag is more physically challenging in terrain and time but very satisfying when you complete. Both hikes offer unforgettable scenery and majestic views. Johannes offer personalized service as hiking groups are small. I enjoyed not having to worry about where to go and to actually walk a path not used by everyone else. He sets a good pace but adjusts to the abilities of the hikers and takes safety seriously. I am planning to come back for his snow shoe trip with overnight stay in a snow cave!

I’ve literally just got back to our accommodation after our day trip to hike Kjerag with Outdoor life Norway. What an experience.

Johansen our guide was fantastic, and you can tell very quickly that he’s in it for his passion of nature and in general just being a good human. You get the feeling that he really does want to give you a memorable experience, and not just because of financial reasons.

He was the only tour operator we could find hat was still doing hikes at this time of year. I was told that in peak season the car park is full and bustling, and that you may even have to wait an hour when you get to the boulder to have your photo. As we went so late and the end of season, there was literally no one there when we parked up. Throughout the whole hike we probably encountered around 5 other groups of hikers…perfect!

We had some snow higher up and Johansen had provided snow spikes for us all the wear, it really did feel like we were on an expedition!

All in all a great day, and one we will remember. On route back I asked about the other trips he offers…one for next year 😉

Don’t hesitate and get your trip booked!!!

This was the highlight of my trip to Stavanger. The hike was enjoyable and the view from the top was amazing. The weather was pretty bad on the day that we went but I felt safe with such an experienced guide, who was also easy to get along with and chat with in the car and on the hike.

I opted to the photo package and the photos are amazing, definitely worth adding to the package. If I had have been in the town longer I’d have had no hesitation in booking onto one of the other hikes the company offer.

This ended up being the sole reason for my first trip to Norway! Johannes was a fantastic and knowledgable guide who took some amazing photographs. He is very passionate about the outdoors and it shows in his enthusiasm for hiking. I would definitely recommend the optional photo package as it leaves you to truly experience the amazing scenery, without having to worry about taking photos to look back on. I look forward to returning to Stavanger and taking part in one of Outdoorlife Norways’ other excursions.

Hiking in Norway has been on the top of my bucket list for a long time, and this hike is one to remember! Everything about it was fantastic – the landscape and views were just incredible, and the degree of challenge was just what I was after. But I think what really made the hike something special was Johannes, our guide from outdoorlife Norway. I could instantly tell that he is passionate about hiking and all things outdoors, and he is so enthusiastic to share this with people and get people excited too. One thing you could tell was that he really knows his stuff, and has so much knowledge of and experience with the outdoors. The hike itself was organised seamlessly, and he made every effort to ensure everyone was safe and enjoying themselves – this was really important for me as I was travelling solo. I hope to hike with outdoorlife Norway again one day!

My brothers and I were excited to see the Kjeragbolten but didn’t know what to expect.

It was our first hike and the guide made us feel like it wasn’t that big a deal. He gave us enough confidence to do things right and the most important thing, he didn’t help us, he taught us how to do them. Even at the boulter he made us feel quite safe! And don’t worry if you’re too afraid of heights he can help you get in there so you can overcome your fear 😀

He even gave us snacks during the hike and a sort of norwegian tear after the kjeragbolten.

It was definately a unique experience that we totally recommend.

Takk for turen Johaness!

I am an inexperienced hiker and this Autumn hike to Kjerag is my first hike ever! Without the help of the guide, Mr. Johannes, I don’t think I could made it up to Kjeragbolten. His impressive knowledge of Norway places, useful hiking tips and consistent guidance made the whole trip full of excitement and satisfaction for me. When I reached the site of Kjeragbolten, the astonishing view of those mountains, fjord, and the amazing famous Kjeragbolten made me realized that this trip was worthy, and my decision to travel with OutdoorlifeNorway is right.

On the way back to Stavanger on car, I told my hiking buddies that I might not hike again. Well … I guess I just anyhow said it due to fatigue at that moment. I might probably hike again. Maybe I will think about hiking to a more challenging place such as Trolltunga and of course with OutdoorLifeNorway!

P.S. I really like the hot beverage Johannes provided during the break. The feeling of drinking it with crazily blowing wind at the top of mountain was awesome. 😀

Takk for turen!

Johannes is the best guide I’ve had, across a few different outdoor activities in Norway and in other countries. He makes it feel safe and manageable, he’s open and friendly, and he knows plenty about the landscape. Kjerag is a beautiful hike, and Johannes knows the best way to get to the bolt and back so that you will be less tired and sore by the end of the day. I want to go anywhere that Johannes leads!

As an inexperienced hiker, I was very fortunate to have Johannes motivate me and lead the hike. He was very encouraging and knew the best paths to take. He provided walking sticks and hot drinks for us on the tour. Another huge benefit of going with Johannes is that he knows where the best views are at and takes professional photos for you at the rock! Would highly recommend!

Seowoo K

Johannes is an excellent guide for this trip up to the Kjerajbolten. It was not just a normal hiking trip but also an educational one.

At the foot of the 2nd mountain, he vividly illustrated his salute to the Nepali whom were hired to split boulders for making stairs up to the 2nd mountaintop.

At the top of the 3rd mountain and the plateau to the Kjerajbolten, he also explained the confusion of Norwegians of how individual boulders actually sat on the plateau when there are no taller accompanying mountains.

As we are the last group of the Autumn climb, the plateau was already covered by snow and some of the permanent routes are made dangerous due to flowing water and ice. His expertise and experience brought us to the Kjerajbolten safely.

As for the wet autumn hike, it was a very wise choice of us to have rented the climbing boots from Johannes because his shoes have extremely good grip. The boots literally survived being sunk into the mud and ice. For most of the granites which were wet, his shoes simply held it firmly and you will have less heartaches when you miss a step and scrapped his boots at the side. Of course, the best part is that you don’t have to clean up the mess after that. That is a brilliant service provided by him on this aspect.

On the return route, he was able to find easier paths which are less taxing for those who are already struggling, rather than just blindly following a formal stipulated path and I think that is the reason why you would hire a private guide. That is probably where your money is made worthy for.

Absolutely great trip with Johannes , he really made the trip well worth it with his expertise and experience. Got very luck to get great photos for an autumn day with the fog clearing perfectly in time. Overall and awesome experience that I would recommend to anyone who is keen for a cool adventure with some slightly difficult sections

Johannes is a super cool guy. Loved doing this trip and got very lucky with the weather for autumn in Norway. Definitely recommend to anyone visiting Norway this should be on the top of your list

I could not recommend this hike to Kjerag with OutdoorLife Norway any higher – we were so impressed! The tour to Kjerag in the Autumn with Johannes was well organized and executed perfectly. His guiding and hiking skills, with knowledge of Norway and the terrain are outstanding and were greatly appreciated! Anyone choosing to hike to Kjerag, definitely do so with OutdoorLife Norway – choose the guide and the personalized service, you will have only good memories (no regrets!) when all is said and done. Thank you Johannes for your kindness, expertise and hiking poles!, and OutdoorLife Norway for an unforgettable experience, we will see you the next time we are in Norway!

Johannes provided an outstanding day-trip to Kjeragbolten. Communication before the trip was seamless and pickup from my hotel was right on time. He provided excellent information on the topography of the land that we were hiking over and kept us a little off-the-beaten path. He is very full of energy, has an amazingly positive attitude and surprised our group with some nice little treats along the way. His van only holds eight people so you will always be with a small group limited to seven guests. I would love to hike with him again and strongly recommend any trip that he would offer.

Outdoor Life Norway and Johannes were impeccable from the first contact via email to the receipt of our photos on the Kjerag rock shortly after our travels. For a Fall/Autumn/September hike this was the best (read: almost only) way to do a Kjerag hike as it is the end of tourist season and the Tide Reiser service does not extend past summer. Thank GOODNESS this was the case, because I can’t imagine having done the Kjerag hike any other way. Johannes’ service was timely, courteous, thoughtful and showed great expertise in hiking, guiding, Norway, and customer service overall. The 2.5 hour drive was lovely, made better by Johannes’ thoughtful conversation, interesting facts, and our mixed company of hikers!

We felt safe, cared for, and encouraged throughout the hike. I am so glad we had such a knowledgeable guide for this hike; yes you can do it without a guide, but Johannes’ knowledge of the trail, where to go/not to go, tricks and tips really made this experience a magnificently rewarding one, as well as an achievable one. It was nice to not have to focus too hard on how to get to Kjeragbolten, since we could just follow our expert guide.

The nummy hot berry juice after the first steep hill was also a lovely surprise after climbing hard in the wind and cooler air. September is an amazing time to climb: crowds are low and the weather is varied (we had cooler temperatures, gray skies, some sun, a little rain, wind) which makes it exciting!

Remember a change of clothes for after the hike, you’ll get dirty climbing, maybe falling a couple times in the muck, and sweating; there are restrooms at the start/end of the hike.

Thank you Johannes for the once-in-a-lifetime experience; when we’re in the region again, we’ll make sure to look you up for another fun, probably custom excursion!!

Amazing Hike, very Scenic! Johannes is a very knowledgable and helpful guide. The trip to the Kjerag boulder was awesome!
