Are you looking for an ultimate once-in-a-lifetime trekking adventure? Have you dreamed about visiting Norway’s spectacular fjords, but want to avoid the crowds of tourists? Journey off-season through Fjord Norway and join our demanding 3-day Kjerag Winter Expedition followed by guided winter/spring hikes to Preikestolen & Trolltunga.

10,000 years ago, the last ice age ended and massive glaciers scraped their way from the mountain tops down toward sea level. In the process, Norway’s rugged landscapes, most notably its fjords, were uncovered. Some of the world’s most spectacular outdoor scenery can be enjoyed from atop Kjerag, Preikestolen, and Trolltunga, all of which are located deep within Norway’s wilderness. Besides being spectacular nature destinations, the landmarks share the distinction of being three of Norway’s most popular tourist destinations.

During much of the winter and springtime, Fjord Norway’s majestic mountaintops are blanketed in thick layers of snow and ice. The few who venture up to Kjerag, Preikestolen, and Trolltunga during the off-season encounter peace and solitude unlike anywhere else on earth. Our professional guides are trained to safely maneuver rapidly-changing weather and trail conditions*, and carry with them all necessary navigation, safety, first-aid, and outdoor winter equipment.

Our package tours include overnight accommodation, breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Let us take care of the hassle and free yourself to fully enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

*Please be advised that, for safety reasons, hiking to Kjerag, Preikestolen, and/or Trolltunga during the off-season without an experienced guide is not recommended.

DAY 1 | Wednesday or Friday
Fjord Cruise | Shared Lodge Accommodation in Lysebotn

Before starting the adventure, you’ll meet your guide at Outdoorlife Norway’s office in Stavanger. There, you’ll receive an instruction and safety briefing to prepare you for the expedition. It will also be a great opportunity to get to know the guide(s) and other participants  =)

After the briefing, you’ll be transported to the base of the fjord, during which you’ll be able to catch glimpses of some of the region’s many natural landscapes. You’ll then cruise the full length of the Lysefjord by ferry, view the world-renowned Preikestolen cliffside from below, and get your first glimpses of the Kjerag Boulder. Once back ashore, you will check into a cozy fjord lodge, your (shared) accommodation for the next two nights. If you’re lucky, there will be a colourful sunset over the fjord.

DAY 2 | Thursday or Saturday
Kjerag Winter Expedition Shared Lodge Accommodation in Lysebotn

You’ll start your expedition in the midst of darkness, and hike with headlamps. From Lysebotn, the expedition route follows a winding mountain road, which is closed for the season, as it switchbacks its way up through 26 hairpin turns into the Sirdal mountains. This time of year, at higher altitudes, it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll encounter snow and ice. Your guide has the experience and know-how, and will provide you with hiking poles, spikes, and snowshoes.

As the sun rises over the mountains, your guide will lead onward to Kjerag’s famous boulder. This portion of the expedition consists of three slopes that are interspersed with two valleys. After 6 hours of trekking, you’ll reach the edge of the mountain’s plateau. While standing on a 1000-meter-high cliff, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the 42-kilometer-long Lysefjord, which is simply some of the most dramatic scenery Fjord-Norway has to offer. At the boulder, which hangs a heart-stopping 984 meters above the fjord, you will have time to relax and enjoy your packed lunch.

After the lunch break, your guide will lead you back down the mountain, which will take about 5 hours.  As the sun sets and darkness takes over, you’ll again hike with headlamps. No doubt tired and hungry, you’ll arrive back at the warm fjord lodge. While you enjoy a hot shower and a change of clothes, your guide will prepare dinner: a hearty Norwegian stew that will warm both your body and soul.

DAY 3 | Friday or Sunday
Fjord Cruise | DinnerAccommodation at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge

On the last morning of your expedition, you’ll have time to sleep in and enjoy the tranquility of the area. If you still have energy to burn, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in some additional activities before lunchtime. Early afternoon, your adventure will come to an end with another fjord cruise, which will transport you back out to the mouth of the fjord. This will be followed by land-transportation back to Stavanger.

The 3-day Kjerag tour ends in Stavanger at approximately 17.45 (5.45pm). Once back, you’ll fetch you own vehicle/rental car before driving yourself to Preikestolen Mountain Lodge (we’ll provide you with directions).

Total travel distance/time | approximately 37 km / 1-1.5 hours

After breakfast at the lodge, your professional guide will meet you at the reception and lead you up through the shifting terrain and onward to the mountain’s plateau. This early in the year, weather conditions are constantly changing and the trail is often covered with snow and ice. As needed, you’ll adjust the equipment you use to match the changes in terrain. Along the way, there will be opportunities to catch your breath, enjoy a warm beverage, and snap photos of the spectacular nature around you. After 2.5-3.5 hours of trekking, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of some of the most dramatic scenery Fjord-Norway has to offer. Standing atop the 604-meter-high cliff, the views of the Lysefjord and surrounding mountains are nothing short of awe-inspiring. On top of that, you’ll have the privilege of becoming one of the very few to have experienced Preikestolen during off-season. After a well-deserved break at the cliff’s edge, your guide will lead you back down to the trail-head, which will take about 2 hours. Depending on weather and trail conditions, the hike will end at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge between 14:00 (2:00pm) and 15:00 (3:00pm).

In hiking shoes, your professional guide will lead you up the first hill, called Topp. Once there, you’ll switch to either skis or snowshoes. Then you’ll continue up the mountain to Gryteskar, a location that will provide you with spectacular views of the Folgefonna glacier. The final stretch to Trolltunga traverses the mountain’s plateau. After approximately 6 hours of trekking, you’ll reach the famous Trolltunga rock formation. Your guide will allow you time to enjoy the stunning scenery of Lake Ringedal and the Folgefonna Glacier. Of course, he/she will also ensure you capture a picture or two  =) Your guide will then lead you back down to the trail-head, which will take about 5 hours. Depending on weather and trail conditions, the tour will end at Trolltunga Hotel between 18:30 (6.30pm) and 20:30 (8:30pm).
