Do you have a limited amount of time in Stavanger but would like to experience Norway’s pristine nature AND unique cultural heritage in a single day? Join Outdoorlife Norway on a private tour into Fjord Norway’s glacier-carved mountains, enjoy a tranquil 2.5-hour hike to the highest waterfall in southwestern Norway, and visit some of the region’s unique cultural landmarks.
Månafossen waterfall, which is fed by the Mån river, plunges 92 meters into the canyon below. The force of the waterfall, which is flanked by steep granite walls, produces a dazzling display of mist and rainbows. As it is almost inaccessible by public transportation, the waterfall remains relatively unknown, even among locals, making it a true hidden gem for tourists.
Your professional guide will meet you at the time and location you selected when booking (see text above for options). During the hour-long drive into the mountains, your guide will navigate through a variety of landscapes, including pastures, meadows, green valleys, and fjords. Once at the trailhead, you’ll be briefed before starting your 2.5-hour hike. The first leg of the hike, up to the waterfall, takes approximately 45 minutes (one-way), and is steep at times. Stairs made of wood and locally-sourced stone pave the way, helping to make the hike less difficult. Your guide will maintain a relaxed pace up the trail, and then give you ample time to enjoy the beauty of Månefossen.
After the rest, if time allows, you’ll continue hiking upstream to visit the green valley of Fidjadal, which takes approximately 45 minutes (one-way). There, you’ll take another short break at the deserted mountain farm of Mån, which was inhabited until 1915. It’s a great place to enjoy a warm drink and a snack while taking in the serenity of the Norwegian wilderness. After the break, your guide will lead you back down to the trailhead.
Your guide will then transport you to Byrkjedalstunet, which has been described as a miniature version of Norway. The site includes a charming country hotel, a restaurant that serves traditional Norwegian cuisine, and a small-scale candle factory that also serves as an outlet for local artisans. You’ll have an opportunity to purchase traditional, hand-made arts & crafts, artisanal foods, wool designer wear, and carved wood souvenirs, amongst other treasures. This portion of the tour lasts about 30 minutes.
Just a few minutes up the road, your guide will transport you to Gloppedalsura, which is one of Northern Europe’s largest screes. Formed about 10,000 years ago as the last ice age ended, it consists of a 100-meter-thick layer of huge (up to house-sized) boulders. During the Nazi invasion in 1940, Gloppedalsura was used as a natural defensive position by Norwegian soldiers. Here, you’ll take a short break before starting the 1-hour drive back to Stavanger.
Your adventure will conclude with a stop at the viking memorial site ‘Swords in Rock’, just outside of Stavanger, where (legend says) the viking king Harald Fairhair’s triumph in battle resulted in Norway becoming one kingdom.

This hike was definitely a highlight of our entire 2 week vacation! We booked this day hike as an excursion for the day we were in Stavanger. Hilda was our guide, and she met us right at the port where our cruise ship docked. She was so friendly right from the start, and made us feel perfectly welcome and comfortable. We had about an hour’s drive to the start of our hike, and she was able to share so much about the area and Norwegian culture. The hike itself was beautiful – perfect for our family of four. The steep incline was rocky and wet, but the climbing and challenge made it a lot of fun for our two boys, 12 & 6. The falls are breathtaking! At the top, she laid out a tarp, and gave us each a drink of hot blackcurrant juice (delicious!) and told us stories of trolls, that the boys especially enjoyed :). On the way down, she pointed out wild blueberries and raspberries (and a green plant that now I can’t remember the name of, but tasted like green apple peel! ) that we munched on. Even though it was rainy, steep and slick, our boys didn’t complain once! We so enjoyed this hike, and our time with Hilda. It was hard to say goodbye :). Would highly recommend this hike and this tour company! Excellent experience all around.
It wasn’t only the hike and beautiful view I enjoyed, it was the gentlemen from outdoor life Norway who accompanied me and letting me know about the history of places around. Nice trip along with nice chat 🙂
My 7 year old son and I had a great time on this hike! Johannes was patient and helpful. He was very responsive to my emails when I had questions. I felt confident in his skills and knowledge of the terrain. It was a beautiful hike up the mountain. I would highly recommend this day trip.
The hike was gorgeous and I was pretty much mesmerized by the waterfall. It was great to also see the source of the waterfall and learn about the history of the farming area and hiking cabins. Great, easy, but rewarding jaunt! Way better than trying to go up alone without someone explaining the history and environment. Loved it.
I think it was a great idea to book this tour. The hike is quite easy but always interesting. The waterfall was very beautiful and one of the biggest I have seen in Norway. I also liked that we have gone to the Mån farm, too. Johannes did a great job and was always able to answer our questions about nature, Norway and …
Thank you for a nice trip.
We spend a wonderful half-day with Johannes from the moment he picked-up us until the moment he left us at the meeting point. The drive to the starting point of the hike offers beautiful landscapes. The hike is sometimes demanding but at the end you can relax and have a nice time at the Mån farm. From my experience is good to have warm clothes with you and gloves to help you with the chains.
I had a really good time during this hike. The drive to the waterfall is already very nice. The waterfall is beautiful. I liked that the hiked continued to the farm and see a different landscape. Johannes knows a lot about the environment and tells about it with lots of enthusiasm.
We had an excellent time and it was easily the best day spent of our time in Norway. Already the drive to the starting point offered lots of beautiful vistas and the hike through a diverse and beautiful landscape was demanding at times, but manageable. Our guide Johannes was very friendly and entertaining and prepared for all occasions.
Nature talking to you in a beautiful waterfall. Johannes gives all the insights with his excellent guide.
