Weather Changes

Due to the possibility of rapidly-changing weather conditions, it may be necessary to make changes to scheduled trips. In the event that your trip needs to be rescheduled for another day or cancelled on short notice, you may choose between joining the rescheduled trip or getting a refund. In the event that weather conditions deteriorate during your trip, it may be necessary to turn around on the trail or head back earlier than planned. If this happens, no refunds will be given.

NOTE: We cannot guarantee that the sunrise will be visible during all hikes.
As with all outdoor activities, weather is not something humans can control. Based on our experiences with past guests, we don’t cancel our tours in advance because of grey skies, light rain, or fog. Guests have a wide range of expectations, but it is our experience that most would rather go through with their hike, regardless of the weather conditions. Hiking under blue skies is nice, but there is also beauty in hiking through clouds, fog, and light rain. Some of the most spectacular sunrises have resulted from such conditions =)

On an annual basis, Preikestolen welcomes more visitors than any other trekking-destination in Norway. In 2018, approximately 300,000 hikers are expected to make their way up to the top of the imposing cliff that hangs 604 meters above the Lysefjord.

Outdoorlife Norway invites you to experience a unique Preikestolen hiking adventure, guaranteed to be crowd-free! Join us on a twilight hike to Preikestolen and catch the sun rising over the Lysefjord.

Your professional guide will meet you during the wee-hours of the morning (please select a meeting-point when booking) and transport you to the base of the hiking trail.

You’ll start your adventure in the midst of darkness and walk with headlamps through the twilight of the night. After approximately 2.5 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Preikestolen where, after finding yourself a beautiful spot to relax, you’ll watch as the first deep orange beams of sunlight illuminate the steep mountain walls that tower over the Lysefjord.

Long before the first tourist-packed busses arrive from Stavanger, you’ll be on your way back down the trail to conclude your unique hiking experience with a well-deserved breakfast at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge. In the late season, we will most likely return too late for breakfast. In that case, the Mountain Lodge will serve you a delicious hot soup and home-made bread instead.

Total: ~9-12.5 hours (depends on time of year, weather, and pick-up location)
Hiking: ~6 hours (including breaks)
Transportation: ~1 hour (each way)
Post-Hike Rest: ~1 hour (breakfast at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge)

When booking, you can select one of the following pick-up locations. The pick-up time depends on the time of year:

preikestolen sunrise hike - Preikestolen Sunrise Hike - pick up sunrise 2018 - New tour booking lay-out - pick up sunrise 2018

NOTE: Make sure to book the right date. The guide will pick you up (very) early in the morning, and you’ll be back around noon on the date you select.

The tour ends in Stavanger between* 10:00am and 13:30 (01:30pm).
*This is an approximation which depends highly on the time of year, weather, and other factors.

Recommended Accommodations Outside of Stavanger / Alternative Pick-Up Locations

Preikestolen Mountain Lodge is located just a stone’s throw away from the trail-head that leads up to Preikestolen. We recommend this modern yet cozy lodge as a place to overnight before and/or after your hike. You’ll enjoy the added benefits of more sleep before the hike and the ability to take a hot shower & nap immediately after breakfast.

We can also kindly recommend Lilland Hotel for your pre/post hike accommodation. Just a scenic ferry-ride outside of Stavanger, the Hotel is located in the village of Tau and is in close proximity to the fjords. If you choose Lilland Hotel for your pre/post-hike accommodations, you’ll enjoy the added benefits of an extra hour of sleep before the hike plus a 10% discount* on your accommodation.
*If you have a current booking with Outdoorlife Norway, Lilland Hotel will give you a 10% discount on their room-rates. Please send an email to and use the discount code “OLN”.

Well organized. We had a fantastic guide with loads of experience and a genuine passion for nature. You can really tell this is much more than just a job for them.
The weather was great during our hike, which meant we got to see some amazing views from the top as well as on our way up. The small groups (at most 7+guide) does provide a more personal experience and enables you to appreciate the views so much more without the crowds that show up later in the day.
Highly recommended!

I highly recommend these guys. They are very experienced guides and they are amazing in conveying the passion, love and knowledge they have for nature to other people. I had a fantastic experience with them, and learned a lot about Norwegian nature. Absolutely great!

I was a little bit scared to hike in the dark through the norwegian mountains up to the Preikestolen but Erlend makes you feel confident very quickly. He explains about the plants, animals, trolls, huldra and other spooky things :). Erlend takes really beautiful pictures during the hike and on the top. He loves what he is doing !

You may get up very very early in the morning to do the sunrise hike but you will not regret a single moment as you will enjoy a magical, breathtaking view, almost all alone, with a good tea and norwegian chocolate. We were very very lucky with the weather that day and we saw an amazing sunrise.

You need to be in a good condition and good shoes to hike up.

I reommend to hike with Outdoorlife Norway.

Takk for turen.

I was traveling to Stavanger to visit my son who lives there. I was there last summer, and didn’t make it to Preikestolen. I really wanted to get there this time. I was traveling solo, so I wanted to go on a tour. This one just really stuck out to me. And I am so glad I went.

It really was an amazing adventure. Nature didn’t cooperate, and there was no sunrise, but the view from the top is breathtaking. The tour guide was great. And hiking down to the lodge for a wonderful Norwegian breakfast was a perfect way to end the morning. Thanks you for the great hike to the beautiful view!!

Our guide Alain was knowledgeable and engaging, and a great photographer. The hike was moderate, but unfortunately the pace was rushed- particularly on the way up. I think that because we had just switched to the ‘later’ schedule in August there wasn’t the typical amount of time given to the ascent.
What was most important was the time at the top of this amazing place!
Also note: wear waterproof pants and hiking boots or they will charge you (a lot) to rent them.

Dear Andrew,

Thanks for taking the time to review your experience with Outdoorlife Norway. I am pleased to hear you enjoyed our tour with Erlend – often spelled very differently by our guests, ;). I am sorry you felt the tour was somewhat rushed, and I would like to explain why you might have felt it this way, especially for future visitors.

You joined the sunrise hike to Preikestolen. Since the sun rises early in Stavanger in summer, pick-up for this tour is in the middle of the night. To get to Preikestolen, we have to take a ferry. In the night time, there are only a few ferry departures. Since the time of the sunrise changes throughout the season, we have to calculate which ferry to take in order to “make” the sunrise.

As you said, on your tour we had just switched from a very early ferry departure to a (still) early ferry departure. We do this, so we can give our guests the opportunity to sleep (and thus be rested) as much as possible before the hike. Also, having to wait for the sunrise at the top of Preikestolen for 1,5 hours in the middle of the night (which would have been the case otherwise) would be too much for most of our guests, especially because it can get rather chilly.

We do not change the ferry departure without knowing that we have enough time to actually make the sunrise, which is set to two hours to reach the top. This requires our guests to be in reasonable shape and have some previous hiking experience, as explained on our tour description. So yes, we had a good pace on this particular day. =)

For us, it is most important that our guests experience what they came for: the sunrise at Preikestolen. As with all our tours, we do not like to be in a hurry, so we allow for enough time to rest on the top to enjoy the views, and taking it easy on the way down. Whenever we have more time on the way up, we take it a bit slower as well. 😉

When it comes to equipment, the terrain and weather requires visitors to use good hiking boots and clothes. You are in the mountains, where weather can change fast! Jeans and sneakers are just not sufficient for hiking. We give the opportunity to rent equipment when booking, but of course guests can take their own boots and water/wind proof hiking clothes. In our tour description and confirmation emails, we do state that guests have to rent boots and water/wind proof hiking clothes if they do not bring this themselves. This kind of equipment requires heavy investments and do not last long. So far, we have not made money on clothes/shoe rental. 😉 Safety first!

Thanks for giving us the opportunity to explain these details for future visitors! You are more than welcome to revisit our beautiful region!

Have a good one! =)

Due to a series of cancelled and delayed flights, I had less than 48 hours in Stavanger to visit two things that I had dreamed of seeing: Kjeragbolten and Preikestolen. With the help of Outdoorlife Norway, I was able to see both things in a unique and personalized manner.

I completed the hike to Kjeragbolten with owner/guide Johannes. Johannes picked up each hiker in a comfortable van for a 2-hour drive to the parking lot. Johannes led my group of 5 expertly through technical parts of the hike. He is knowledgeable, friendly, caring and patient. He took time to explain how to get on the rock and back and he took photos of each of us standing there. He provided light snacks and a hot drink at the summit. I hadn’t brought a lunch, and he gave me one of his sandwiches that he had prepared for himself.

Only a few hours later, I embarked on the Preikestolen Sunrise Hike with Erlend. I chose the sunrise hike because it fit my time frame. But know I realize it is one of the best and least-crowed ways in which to experience Preikestolen. Similar to the day prior, I was picked up by my guide in a van, transported on the ferry, and then taken to the parking lot. This hike ascent is done primarily in the dark, with use of provided headlights. Erlend was knowledgeable, friendly, and a terrific photographer.

Outdoorlife Norway organizes unique, small-group (8 people and less) experiences. It is very easy to book their services via their professional website. They will take care of the transport, equipment, and photography. They provide detailed information regarding all aspects of your journey. Takk for turen Outdoorlife Norway!

I booked the Preikestolen Dawn hike back in April and on coming to Norway, realised that you could do the dawn hike DIY so was sceptical about the value and had very high expectations.
TL;DR: it was definitely worth it and our expectations were exceeded, book it now.
It was almost like Erlend had appeased the mountain gods or something as it was a bright and clear night/morning when the day before the valleys had been full of fog and it had rained non-stop.
Erlend was a fantastic guide. He was knowledgeable, friendly and easy to talk to. Like a hiking buddy rather than a guide. His knowledge of the area and the flora added another dimension to the hike and made it completely awesome.
We were lucky in that my partner and I were the only ones booked for that evening so we enjoyed the luxury of a personal guide!
Erlend showed us what plants were edible, and gave us taste tests, showed us the carnivorous ones and told us about the various flowers, birds and grasses of the area which was unexpected and awesome.
His love of photography meant it was like we had our own professional photographer and I can’t wait to see some of the shots he took which we posed for on the way up and down taking breaks from hiking. He knew all the best spots to take photos, and we were lucky to have great light.
The view at Preikestolen was just as amazing as all the photos on the internet and we had the pleasure of having Móði and Magni (Erlend’s names for the local Ravens), put on a morning show for us as we watched the sunrise.
I’d highly recommend doing this hike with Erlend. Yes, you can don your headlamp and hike up there yourself, like a lot of others walking up the path to Preikestolen, but I don’t think any of them got as much knowledge about the unique and beautiful environment they were walking through as we did.
Worth every cent and would highly recommend it.

One of the most enchanting hikes. Erlend was knowledgeable and is a good photographer. The company delivers what is promised, although slightly expensive but really worth it. Imagine hiking in the dark with birds chirping…the clouds lie low and creating a mist. And importantly NO CROWDS along the way and at the top. And the beautiful sunrise. Magical. And on the way down, you get educated on the plants and end off with a well deserved breakfast. I highly recommend it!

This is a very arduous climb and not for the faint hearted and you need to be suitably attired and prepared. The guides say to allow 2 hours each way, however if you are unfit like me allow the best part of extra hour either way. The perseverance will pay off because the views from the top are magnificent and you can bask in a real sense of achievement.

While backpacking trough Norway for 2,5 weeks, I wanted to experience the most unique hikes and nature of Norway. The sunrise hike with Johannes was by far the most impressive and beautiful hike in which I participated. Watching the sunrise on the Preikestolen without people, clouds and any wind was a one-in-a-life experience which I will never forget! Johannes will make sure you have a perfect trip to the pulpit rock, he’s great! I recommend this trip to everyone.

Absolutely beautiful hike especially with avoiding crowds by going so early. In April didn’t even see other hikers until halfway through the hike back.

Guide was very knowledgable and fun to talk to through the trip. He was even able to bring his dslr and take photos since the group was so small. Made it way easier to focus on enjoying the trip versus trying to take pictures throughout.

The sunrise hike to Pulpit Rock was unreal couldn’t of asked for a better experience watching the sun come up and an awesome breakfast afterwards

We booked 2 tours (Sun rise hike and Kjerag hike) and both of them were absolutely amazing.
We were blessed with a good weather in the morning of the sun rise hike and we obaserved the sky gradully changing its colour and the beauty of the sun rise was beyond imagination. Don’t forget to bring some warm clothes as it could get cold while waiting for the sun rise.
We initially thought the drive to Kjerag could be bit long, but it was totally fine as we were entertained by various scenaries and their beauty. Johannes was very frindly and knowledgeable and his knowledge in the area enabled us to see one of the most interesing and amazing views one the way to the famous rock. Well, I think that was the best part of the trip rather than being on the famous rock!! Johannes was also very organised, punctual, and efficient, which we always value a lot when doing a tour.
Highly recommended!

THIS WAS AMAZING. It made my entire trip to western Norway the perfect experience. It was worth getting up to the mountain early and ahead of all the other tourists. You see the moon then the sunrise and you experience the mountain and fjords the way it was meant to be experienced. There is barely anyone else when you get to the top and you feel like you’re back in time and on top of the world. Gorgeous. If this is the only hike you do, then do this one for real. And Johannes is the best guide because he explains so much about history and nature of the area all the way up. He really cares about the environment and history and provides an EXCELLENT experience.

Norway is one of the most beautiful countries in the world and a paradise for hikers who want to experience the richness of nature and flee from the stressed everyday life. But even here some places are crowded with tourists and the Preikestolen with up to 5k visitors a day at summer is one of them.
Johannes offers an alternative. The Preikestolen Sunrise hike is an absolutely unique experience and was an event we will always remember. We where very lucky and had the chance to view an absolutely perfect sunrise but it´s not only about the sun climbing up over the fjord. The whole hike was very special and had something magic about it. Not least because of Johannes who is a great guide and made this trip the perfect event that it was.

We visited Stavanger in April 2015 to do the sunrise hike with Johannes (see the 1st review!!) but we wanted to come back again to see if we could get better weather. Luckily for us the weather couldn’t be more perfect.

Johannes is great to deal with and very professional. He has all of the gear to hire if you need to. Despite not having any sleep the night before our 1am departure, it was probably the best experience of my life to date. The scenery, views, experience and sunrise is something that not everyone is lucky enough to see.

Johannes has snacks along the way to keep your energy up and offers to take photos for you to ensure you capture the moment.

Would recommend this tour to anyone visiting Stavanger.

Preikestolen Sunrise Hike was the first hike of two days hiking with Outdoorlife Norway. Our hike began at 3 am (early!!!) and in complete darkness. Our local guide, Johannes, shared a bit of history of the trail and was polite, patient & fun to hike with. At the top we were welcomed by thick white fog and saw the transition of mountain weather to a beautiful sunrise. One of my favorite parts of the hike is experiencing it in complete isolation, as we were the only people hiking that early. The entire hike was very peaceful and rewarding. I would definitely recommend this hike to anyone visiting Norway!!!

Bravo ! This trip was very very unique for me. Though i already hiked to Pulpit Rock in afternoon once but wanted to feel the thrill once again with the night hike and i just can not mention the feeling in words.
Pros : – Very professionally organised, Well informed about routs and risks, Well equipped, Some surprise on the top for you to eat.
Some Suggestions – A forum where all the trekkers can meet and share experience and pictures, Will love to get some photography tricks and tips to capture the beautiful sunrise, Meet up with locals if possible, veg option for mountain top and printed brochures about other of your activity to publicize🙂 - New tour booking lay-out - 1f642

I will strongly recommend it to my friends and its one of life best “Must do” things. Salute to Johannes for such ideas. i wish i could have you in Oslo also for some amazing adventure trips.

The sunrise hike to Preikestolen was a very special and amazing experience. Johannes was an excellent guide and permanently concerned about our wellbeing during the event. Since this was my first hike I was quite nervous and too excited before the trip, but knowing that we were with a professional such as Johannes made me feel at ease. The sunrise at the top was magnificent, and adding the hot drinks and pancakes made the moment even more special. Thanks again Johannes for an amazing trip.

The Pulpit Rock is just an amazing place in the Norwegian nature! I specially enjoyed the fact that it was a night-hike with an arrival just in time for the sunrise – the light is overhelming and perfect for photos! But best of it: You are on the rock at a time, when it is not crowded by other tourists yet. Johannes knows everything about that hike including some secret spots for the best photos – thank you!

The most rewarding hike I have ever done. Colorful from step one until you get back to enjoy your breakfast. I’ll do this 100 times again. Johannes is an excellent guide! Please yourself and join this hike!

Amazing, one-off experience! Night hike gives a bit of thrill and stretch, and is fully rewarded by the marvellous views from the top. Lysefjord in the sunrise light is a scenery to be remembered for life, and taking this very morning trip gets you a chance to enjoy the view in your small company, not in the crowd. The hike was organized and guided by Johannes, in a very professional yet friendly and humorous way, so we all enjoyed it greatly. All in all excellent, highly recommend!

The Sunrise Hike to Pulpit Rock is a must do when you’re in Stavanger. Johannes was a fantastic guide and very informative. It is such a great way to start the day, something unique and different that’s for sure! I would love to return and do it again 🙂 - New tour booking lay-out - 1f642Thanks Johannes for an amazing experience!!!
