Weather Changes

Due to the possibility of rapidly-changing weather conditions, it may be necessary to make changes to scheduled trips. In the event that your trip needs to be rescheduled for another day or cancelled on short notice, you may choose between joining the rescheduled trip or getting a refund. In the event that weather conditions deteriorate during your trip, it may be necessary to turn around on the trail or head back earlier than planned. If this happens, no refunds will be given.

Avoid the crowds by joining us on a ‘off the beaten track’ hike and enjoy a unique Preikestolen experience.  Hike in near-solitude while encountering out of this world views of Preikestolen and the Lysefjord – which only few have seen.

This tour is organized in cooperation with the Norwegian Trekking Association and Preikestolen Mountain Lodge. It is highly recommended that you spend the night at this cozy mountain lodge, be it before or after your hike.

You’ll embark on your trip by canoeing across Refsvatn Lake. During 70% of the hike, you’ll follow off-the-map trails which are overgrown and have (almost) been forgotten. These trails are rarely used and the cairns that lead the way through dense forests are difficult to find. Once above the tree-line, the trail completely disappears: the remaining 30% of the hike is thus comprised of off-trail hiking & scrambling.

During this portion of the hike, you’ll experience out-of-this-world and rarely-seen views of Preikestolen and the Lysefjord. After about 3,5 hours on foot, you’ll reach a viewpoint of Preikestolen that the majority of others only get to see in tourist brochures.

You will then hike down to Preikestolen and enjoy a well-deserved break atop the impressive plateau that towers 604 meters above sea level. There, you’ll get to view the 1000 meter-high mountain walls surrounding the 42 kilometer-long Lysefjord from a new perspective.

At that point, as you begin the long descent back to civilization, you’ll start by joining the masses of people who are following the main trail away from Preikestolen. After about 20 minutes, you’ll escape the crowds by detouring back onto one of the off-the-map trails. You’ll be able to enjoy the remainder of the hike in near-solitude while you take in the beauty of the Norwegian wilderness from ever-changing perspectives. The hike down will take approximately 2 hours.

Spectacular astonish view! NEVER MISS IT in your life!

Breathtaking views

Challenging hike for a 63 year old lady traveling solo, I trained with extra incline hiking and stair climbing prior but I am in generally good shape for my age.
They call this a hike but in the US it would be called a climb, the mountain is steep.
The guide could not have been better, Erik…thank-you!
It all gave me a tremendous sense of accomplishment.
The photo package was fantastic and worth every penny.
Nothing can prepare you for the down hill though…very jarring to the knees and hips…I personally felt I needed to recover before attempting Kerag

We did the Kjerag and Preikestolen hike with Johannes and Erlend respectively. Both guides were incredibly knowledgeable and very safety oriented not just towards the clients but also other people on the trail. The pick-up was perfectly on-time from your designated pick-up location (as accurate as a Swiss watch!). The admin staff was incredibly lovely, knowledgable and responsive. Any questions were requests were attended to promptly. We really enjoyed both our hikes and would return to use their services again. Thanks!

The reason I keep coming back to Stavanger!

This was my second Outdoorlife Norway hike and I thought my first one was the best experience! This 2nd time was more challenging and thus more rewarding. I hiked with Johannes again as our mountain guide and was really pleased to experience this stunning land with him again. There is something so special and unique about these hikes that you will never have with anyone else offering trips to Preikestolen. The other companies offer ‘tours’ while Johannes and his team offer meaningful, educational EXPERIENCES. Really, Pulpit Rock is not even the most spectacular part, merely just one piece of an amazing, energising physical challenge. The company have a huge amount of respect for the land and preserving a real experience of the untrodden paths through this Norwegian landscape. We saw no one on our hike until we got to Preikestolen and it was just the 4 of us. My partner Dan, Mark from Ohio, me and Johannes. At times I could whisper and still be heard by the group. I’ve never known peace and quiet like it! Also, I have never seen ALL the weather happen in such a short amount of time! Nature is miraculous!

Do yourself a favor and ignore all the other commercially centred ‘tours’ to Preikestolen and get booked on a JOURNEY with Johannes or one of his team because you’ll have an authentic experience and be in the safest of hands. You’ll be pushed, it will be hard and you won’t be helped unless you truly need it and that’s the way it should be. Takk fur TUREN. In the words of Arnie, I’ll be back… AGAIN!<3

Magnífico!

Hice el tour “Off the Beaten Track” y fue espectacular.

Esperienza meravigliosa… Grazie!!!

Ho partecipato questo Settembre alle escursioni “preikestolen: off the beaten track” e “kjeragbolten: beat the croud”,e sono rimasta estremamente soddisfatta.
Queste escursioni valgono ogni singolo centesimo speso.
Consiglio vivamente di acquistare il pacchetto con il servizio fotografico.

Takk for tureen

Speechless! This is a 10 out of 5 stars!

Incredible Nature! You wont find anyone else on this magic and secret path 🙂 it is seriously off the very very very beaten path haha.

If you want an unforgettable experience, enjoy nature, quietness, fresh air, Fjords and amazing picture views. This is THE way to do it.

Even though the day I hiked I was the only one; the company sent the best team to guide me. Hilde and her dog Molly were just amazing. We had it all on the way up (sun, rain, win. So, be prepare).

Off the beaten track Pulpit Rock

Thought about hiking up to Pulpit Rock on my own but decided to get a guided hike which was absolutely the best decision I could have made.

Our guide, Erik, picked me up from the hotel, drove to the main trail head and we then canoed across a lake which we had to ourselves. We then hiked up a deserted trail which had one amazing view after another. Erik was extremely knowledgeable about the flora, fauna and geology of the area and a fantastic host.

We didn’t see anyone else until we reached Pulpit Rock, which whilst amazing took second place to the hike and the views along the way. Coming down the main drag which was very busy with tourists just reinforced what a great decision to go with Outdoor Life.

Cannot recommend the company or the hike enough and will be using their services again the next time I’m in Stavanger.

Best way to see Preikestolen

Hilde and Molly were the best guides. We knew it would be a great hike but they made it even better. Hilde made us feel so comfortable throughout the entire hike – we were spoiled and it was just 3 of us and of course Molly. Off the beaten path is the only way to see Preikestolen to avoid the crowds. The hike there and above was breathtaking – rain, sun, clouds and all. Well worth it. When they say you need waterproof hiking boots and waterproof pants – they really do mean it. They have everything there that you can rent but bring good socks if you are renting. The off the beaten path part of the hike and meeting Hilde and Molly was the highlight of my two week Scandinavian adventure.

Simply amazing!

Having read some of the reviews on here, I can agree 100% that this really is the only way to see Preikestolen. Our guide, Johannes, was excellent from start to finish. He was knowledgeable and fun and also very patient with the slower member of our group of six (me!). The views were stunning and although the hike was hard work, I enjoyed all of it and you really do see Norway at its best.
Once you actually see the top of Preikestolen, you realise how peaceful the climb up was!
Our trip was booked through Travel Up Norway and they really did make the best decision when choosing ‘Outdoorlife Norway’ to guide us. I would wholeheartedly recommend Johannes and his team to everyone visiting the area.

Hike stupendo

Great adventure off the beaten track

This a great experience if you are looking for something above and beyond the usual hike up the path. Our guide (Erlend) led us first to a canoe ride across the lake and then wen on a semi-challenging hike up an alternate route to Preikestolen – he provided us with great insights along the way and took excellent photos for those who availed the photo package. We were a small group and had a great time just soaking up the environment away from the crowds -i t was only in Preikestolen that we caught up (for a short time) with other Pulpit Rock visitors. Going back down was also a mostly relaxing experience as we took a different route. I highly recommend this tour for people who want to really experience what Preikestolen (and its surroundings) has to offer.

Only go to Preikestolen this way!!!!!!!!!

This is absolutely the ONLY way to go to see “Pulpit Rock”!! In fact, after you get to the rock, you will want to go back to where you had just hiked, b/c you actually had even better views!!!! With the off the beaten path tour you hike with just your group and a very small group (max 8), with an amazing guide! We had Alan for this hike and he was great!!! Great personality (funny!!!) and has a vast knowledge of the region, and local flora (which are many!). The hike itself is so beautiful and in complete solitude. You do not see anyone until you reach the EXTREMELY overcrowded rock and the main trail. I cannot emphasize extremely enough!!!!! If my husband and I would have done the main hike by ourselves, we would have hated it.
Luckily, we did not and had a truly unforgettable experience!! I truly cannot recommend this company highly enough!!! You do need to be in good shape to do it, just FYI, It is not extremely hard, but you do need to be in shape. It is a good workout, for sure. Also, do not be discouraged by what looks like a long day on paper, it is 100% worth it!!!! The travel time to and from is not bad at all.

This hike was a great experience. Our guide was Johannes, he was super friendly and professional. The views were sensational. The hike itself is quite tough so I would recommend one would have a certain level of fitness. It is also awesome because we got to a kid all the crowds for the most part. Truly recommend!

If you can only do one hike around Stavanger, this is the hike for you !!!

This is the best hike you can do in Rogaland.
You start the Journey with a quick canoe ride across the lake and then you start the hike away from the crowd.
Alan was a great guide teaching us about wild life, plants, etc.…
The view from the hike is getting better and better when you’re climbing. And the best reason why you should take this hike. You are away from all the tourists, it’s only you and nature.

Best Hiking Tour You’ll Ever Take

This off the beaten hike is definitely the best way to get to Preikestolen, as you will canoe and hike around areas where there is no one else around— just you, your hiking group and some breathtaking scenery. My guide was Hilde and she was great. She is very friendly and knowledgeable, as she will explain everything ranging from the region’s geological history, legends, etc. This is a great company that you should book for your hikes. I can’t wait to hike with them again when I’m back in Stavanger.

Kjerag and off the beaten track Preikestolen hikes

Did two amazing hikes with Outdoorlife Norway. Mathilde and Ingve were our wonderful guides through Kjerag. I could see that hike being dangerous, but they made sure we got through safely. In addition to the boulder, the views were spectacular. Off the beaten track lives up to its name. The canoeing to start was different and fun. Then, hiking through forest and avoiding the crowds was well worth it. Helping us through and providing plenty of entertainment was our guide Erlend. I especially appreciated that he gave us enough time to take photos on Pulpit Rock once the fog finally cleared. I highly recommend both hikes with Outdoorlife Norway.

A day to remember, forever

Our hike was truly spectacular! Our guide, Hilde, brought a gentle and strong leadership to the day, enabling us to reach beyond our comfort zone. She also shared interesting cultural stories along the way to enhance our Norway experience. The hike was challenging and rewarding and so much better than hiking with the masses. I will never forget this day! First class experience.

Off the Beaten Track- Preikestolen

Our sunrise tour to Preikestolen was cancelled due to unavoidable reasons and Johannes offered this tour as an alternative. And was it a blessing in disguise!! It is one of the most memorable hikes and by the time we reached Preikestolen we had seen at least two better views of the fjords that we may not have seen in the other tour. Johannes and Matilda (sorry if I got her name wrong) were brilliant – encouraging and pushing us along. This is a difficult hike for beginners but hey, we managed to finish it thanks to them! We learnt so much from this experience and thoroughly enjoyed breaking our well manicured finger nails and scratching our knees . This is certainly not the last time I am hiking the fjords and will definitely choose Johannes and his team to guide us again. Highly recommended if you want to push yourself a bit as a beginner!

Very good!

What a nice day it was! Norway is beautiful, and with this company you can enjoy it with amazing excursions and competent guides.

I did the “Off the beaten tracks” excursion and it was totally worth it.

The amazing and peaceful canoeing plus the hike with no one -and I mean no one!- except you and your group members… really amazing! Would totally redo this

Off the Beaten Path to Preikestolen

Amazing Off the Beaten Track Preikestolen
Usually, I plan all our hikes and my husband and I go alone. But since we were going to be in a foreign country rather than the USA, I decided to use Outdoor Life Norway to do the hard work. They are a small operation but seem to be very personalized and well managed. FYI… this is an all day event. 7:15 am to 6pm in our case.

We hate crowds so chose the Off the Beaten Path to Preikestolen. We didn’t do the sunrise hike, which I’d considered in order to avoid the crowds, because I was concerned about early morning fog ruining my pics. The Off the Beaten path option gave me a way to avoid crowds and see the top without the fog.

I am 61 years old and in moderate shape with bad knees. I probably should have booked the private tour, but it was pretty unaffordable so I prayed I’d have kind souls on the hike that would tolerate my slowness. Lucky for me there were only 4 people total (me, my husband, 2 young kind souls) and our wonderful guide Erlend (he let us call him Allen – which was easy and familiar). He has been with Outdoor Life a long time and is a seasoned guide at only 32. Allen has a Masters degree in Botany and trained experience as a photographer. We were so happy we paid for the Photo package. I haven’t gotten the photos yet except for one teaser… enough for me to have no doubt the rest will be great…. Also, follow erlendberne on Insta and you will be firmly sold on the photo package. Though I think he takes pics either way and you can purchase post trip.

We had great communication from Outdoor Life prior to the trip. Believe me, I emailed and called multiple times to double check how much water or exactly what to wear under my rented waterproof pants etc. They were always prompt and made me feel like I wasn’t a bother.

We were picked up as promised at our hotel and driven close by to a 40-minute ferry ride. During the ferry ride, Allen sat with us in the lounge for paperwork and got to know us. We all formed a nice bond and got lots of questions answered. Then, we drove to the main start spot where all self-hiking tourists were arriving to hike up the main public path to the Preikestolen viewpoint.

What was nice about this trip was having everything paid for, Allen never asked for money for ferry or parking or anything on the trip. All incidentals were covered in the price up front. We only brought water and our lunch. At the parking lot start, I was able to buy socks as mine weren’t high enough for the hiking boots I’d rented.

Then we headed away from the tourists and down to the lake edge. We got a brief lesson on canoe paddling and safety, donned our life vests and headed out – two to a boat. It was a very leisurely 30-minute paddle. Allen snapped photos along the route leaving us all free to take in the moment. Which by the way, was spectacular with the fog lifting and the sunlight streaming through. We were the only ones on the glass like water. It was breathtaking. We ditched the canoes at a pre-approved location for someone else to retrieve on our behalf. At this point, with poles in hand, we began our hike.

All along the route, Allen gave us help. He told us when was a good time to shed outer wear, offered bug spray at the right time, told jokes, suggested rest points, offered some snack nuts, pointed out frogs and other sites in the distance (like Stavanger or bridges). He also showed us plants and flowers of interest along the route even letting us taste edible ones. And of course there was the taking of photos – or suggesting to us when to take our own whether you had the photo package or not. Allen knew all the outstanding spots and viewpoints. The best part was that Allen was the lead, so I didn’t have to think about where I was going and if I was on the right path. This seriously felt like we were the first explorers to climb up through the forest and discover Preikestolen. Awesome.

The most helpful bit was how Allen would give us notice on what was coming up. For example, he would say “There are three ledges or rock climbs coming up. After the first two we will be at an amazing viewpoint for having our lunch and then we will do the third ledge which is the easiest”. These explanations really helped keep me going and feeling prepared. The ledges were a bit difficult but Allen told us exactly where to step and where to grip with our hands. I didn’t feel at risk for my safety. I did have trouble along the way with large/tall steps up but my husband would always lend a hand so I didn’t have to scramble up. A few times when my husband was distracted, Allen was at the ready.

Once we arrived at the lunch spot, there were a few other people there. Maybe 3 or 4. They were quite spread out so we had our own space. The view here was magnificent and far outweighed what we say later at Preikestolen. After eating and taking photos to our hearts content, we hiked the last ledge up and then we were able to look down on Preikestolen and the masses. We then walked down to take our obligatory photo on that rock. Afterwards, we walked down the stone steps with the masses for about 30 mins before heading off into the woods on our own path. It was magical to be away from the other tourists. We joined back with them on our last little bit to the parking lot before heading over to catch a different shorter 15 minute ferry followed by a longer drive back to Stavanger.

We certainly took longer (by an hour or more) than most tours do because of my knee problems going downhill. The group and the guide were very gracious in waiting up and not making me feel bad.

I’m sure you can get on a bus and go to the public path and hike up to see Preikestolen and take pics and believe you had a great day. But, when I think back on my memory of the day, my moments at Prekestolen were the least spectacular part of the day. I hold so much more beauty in my memory than that tidbit. Well worth the money spent.

Wonderful views

Highly recommended hike. Hilde and her sweet dog Molly were great guides. If you wanna visit Preikestolen, do not take any other hike but this. Off the beaten track will give you so much more than just going up and down the Pulpit rock with the annoying crowds. If you are out of shape – like I am haha -, I recommend you train bit before taking on this challenge. The amazing views from the top will blow your mind.

Fantastic hiking and experience!

My husband and I did this hike the first day of our trip to Norway. We try and avoid crowds whenever possible and this definitely fit the ticket! Our guide (Hilde) picked us up in Stavanger and we took the car ferry across the fjord. Once we got to Preikestolen we met up with the third member of our group, and we were off. We started off with canoeing across a lovely, calm lake. I was a little worried since I had all my camera gear with me and didn’t want to get anything wet, but we had not issues at all. Once we got to the other side of the lake we started hiking. It was about 5km up to the top, with a respectable climb. The hike was quite rocky, so definitely sturdy shoes and steady feet are required. But Hilde was great in helping us over the really challenging parts. She was also great in giving us details about the landscape and Norwegian folklore.

Honestly the scenery on the way up more or less eclipsed the view from Pulpit Rock, it was so amazing the whole way up.

There were quite a lot of people once we got to Pulpit Rock, and I was really appreciate of having the whole mountain to ourselves on the way up! We also went off the beaten path on the way down. The landscape was very different from the way up – almost like we were in a different part of the country, and again no one else was on the trail!

I definitely recommend this hike. It’s moderately demanding, but if you’re a regular hiker you won’t have any issues. Waterproof shoes are definitely a plus.

A Trip That Gave so Much More Than a Hike

This hike got off to a bit of a rocky start, but in a way that turned out to be amazing: I originally booked the sunrise tour, but due to poor weather conditions our guide Erlend had to cancel it and was nice enough to book me for the ‘Off the Beaten Path’ hike instead the next morning, and I must say that I am glad about how things turned out. This particular hike goes along a path with no one else on it so you truly feel like it’s just you and the mountain. We hiked through all kinds of conditions: sun, clouds, fog, rain, sleet, even some small hail, and it only added to the joy and sense of accomplishment when we reached the top. There was a stretch where the clouds were so low that we couldn’t see the fjord but almost on cue, right as we got near the top it started to clear and the sun came out as if to reward us for our efforts. And Erlend truly is an awesome guy. Not only is he an excellent guide and photographer, but he too is a big fan of Jurassic Park which meant that him and I spent a fair bit of the hike reciting quotes and talking about the finer points of the movie. But getting back to the hike, Erlend made this experience memorable for not just the hiking aspect, but for the friendly aspect. We started the day as strangers, but now I feel like I made one of my closest friends ever. If you get the chance, Outdoorlife Norway should be at the top of your list.

Most Incredible Hike I Had in Norway

I recently visited Norway for a week mainly for hiking and outdoor activities and out of all the hikes that I had across this beautiful country this was by far my favorite. I took the “Off the Beaten Path” hike and Johannes was a great guide from start to finish. I had contemplated taking the bus and ferry service and hiking it by myself but quickly realized that I wanted to experience Preikestolen in a non-tourist way. Johannes provided that and made it easy from the beginning with hotel pick-up, travel arrangements prepared and kicked off the hike with an incredible canoe trip to get to our “secret spot” to start the hike.
What made this hike so amazing was that he took us to spots that were untouched, uncrowded and quite frankly awe inspiring. There was one spot where I just looked down to the fjord and was frozen with amazement. Another highlight of this hike was the teamwork required to complete the hike. It was a small group of 7-8 people, who’ve never met before (some had never hiked before) who inspired each other and came together as a team. Lots of laughter, a little apprehension with some of the scrambling but overall the feeling in the end was sincere gratitude for this experience. Doing the regular hike (path) with all of the other tourists will never give you this experience.
In all transparency, by the time we reached Pulpit Rock it was almost like it didn’t compare to all of the secret spots and views that Johannes took us to. Don’t get me wrong, it was absolutely gorgeous and something you will never forget but it was the journey, teamwork and views that make the “Off the Beaten Path” hike an experience like no other. I’ve already recommended this hike to numerous friends and really hope that I can experience more hiking adventures with OutdoorLife Norway. This company is pretty incredible!

Preikestolen Hiking

The most meaningful experience for me in Norway. I am a freshman in hiking while picked a hard route to Preikestolen. Thanks to Eric’s experienced guide, I did not feel too exhausted to make it finally with my 5 group mates. Everything went cheerfully. I like the hot berry juice. 🙂 Hiking was much more interesting for me than standing at the platform and taking photos.

Fanatic service and experience

My husband and I were in Norway to celebrate our 10 year anniversary and wanted to hit a classic hike sans the crowds. We hiked Pulpit Rock with Outdoor Life Norway on the Off the Beaten Path option. It was very memorable. We got to canoe across a picturesque mountain lake before heading to a hidden trailhead for a completely traffic free version of this popular hike. This hike offered some fun rock scrambling and out of this world views since the rock is approached from above rather than below on the main trail. Our guide was super and happily answered all the questions I had about the landscape, flora and fauna, and other general Norwegian questions. I would definitely use this service!

Fun, Stunning, & Amazing Adventure to Preikestolen

I did the “off the beaten path” hike the second week of September. It was an amazing adventure! I would definitely recommend this hiking company to anyone. Our tour guide was Johannes who is very knowledgeable. We had a fun group of 6 people (from Germany, London, Switzerland, California, and Florida), we all had a great time getting to know one another. We were blessed to have a beautiful, sunny, fall day for the hike. The ‘off the beaten path’ trail was steep and challenging at times, but this made it very rewarding once we got to the top. We stopped for lunch after a couple of hours and had a beautiful lunch view of the Lysefjord. We were provided with a delicious cup of hot black currant juice. Overall, it was an amazing day, I was in awe of the beautiful landscape. We could not have asked for a better tour guide or group of people to hike with. Per our tour guide’s recommendation, my friend and I enjoyed a tasty burger, dirty fries, and a beer after the hike at Dognvill Burger 🙂

If you are thinking about doing one of these trips, stop thinking and just do it! Amazing experience! We did the “off the beaten track” and couldn’t have asked for a better guide in Johannes, very friendly, informative and a good laugh. The canoeing to start with on this trip is a very nice touch and we were very lucky to have amazing weather. Well worth the money.

Beide Wanderungen mit Johannes waren wunderbar 🙂 preikestolen hike “off the beaten track” - Preikestolen Hike Off The Beaten Track - 1f642!

Erlend (the guid) is a very nice und helpful guy.
The trip was one of the best I have ever done.
Paddeling in the canoe was a fantastic way to start the trip. The water was so quiet and clean. It was a short recover in the beautiful nature.
Then we started hiking and somtimes it was nessassary to climb. It was a hard challenge to get on the top of Preikestolen. But it was worth. It is a unbelieveable feeling to achieve the top and to see the whole Fjord.
I recommend the trip to all people who are atheletic and interested in nature. I would do the trip again!
The trip is not suited for people with a big fear of heigths. And it is really neccassary to have waterproof hiking boots with good grip!

I booked the “Off the Beaten Track” hitinerary to Preikestolen and I didn’t regret; besides the big star of the show, the pulpit rock, every 100 meters it was possible to admire fabulous views. Walking alongside the fjord, watching it in its entirety from the highest peak, was a show comparable to the emotion of sitting on the edge of the Pulpit rock, more than 600m high from the sea level. The trail is not that hard if you are in good shape, but I’ve been also lucky to find lovely weather. The guide Alan (that’s the name I used to call him ’cause his real name was to difficutl to pronounce for me) has been a real star, explaining me during the journey everything about the Lyserfjord area and entertaining me with tales about Norway. If I will go back to Stavanger I will definetly choose to hike with this company again.

We asked for a custom “Off the Beaten Track” since our cruise ship arrived too late to join the regular tour. Johannes and Christopher arranged everything perfectly, even though we had less time at our disposal than usually required for the tour. The tour itself was wonderful and luckily almost entirely avoided the crowded paths of the regular way to Preikestolen. In the end, we were a little disappointed by the Preikestolen – but only because the views Christopher had shown us before were even more stunning! We would advise everyone to book a tour to Preikestolen with Outdoorlife Norway. You’ll get a wonderful hike, stunning views and a true glimpse at life in Stavanger!

Hice 2 tours con Outdoorlife Norway

Preikestolen “Off the Beaten Track” y Kjeragbolten “Beat the Crowd”

Preikestolen:

We went up with Erlend the morning of the 26th and can honestly say it was one of the best hikes we have ever been on. We really lucked out with the weather which allowed us to see the incredible Norweigian landscape. Erlend was such a friendly guide with a fantastic sense of humour. This tour is truly one of a kind where the only people you see for the entire morning are those in your group. I think we were all actually disappointed to get to Preikestolen and be surrounded by so many people! The quiet nooks and incredibly scenery on the way up your own private path truly makes this a must-do hike. Couldn’t recommend this any more.

Hi, I opted for the hike with beer tasting on August 13th.my guide was Alan and curiously enough I was the only one hiking with outdoor Norway on this particular hike, this allowed me to experience the hike in a unique way. The highlight of the hike was the guide, he is amazingly knowledgeable about everything from plants to people on the way.

There were many be 5 people on the whole hiking path that I encountered, so it like a very private hike. Anyone who is looking to go off the regular should surely opt for this. Keep talking to Alan, he is very entertaining and thought me a lot about Norway’s culture.

Post the hike, the beer tasting is just an amazing experience on its own, the staff will explain each and every beer you taste, the food and ambiance will certainly appeal to anyone.

I would rate this 10/10 for the guide and views alone about the beer tasting just makes it’s an unbelievably great thing to do. Highly recommended!!!!

P.s. I would recommend that anyone who is hiking opt for the weather proof clothes and hiking boots provided by the company as they are battle tested.

We took the Beat the Crowds hike up the Kjerag and we are so happy we chose to go thru Outdoorlife Norway. It was a great day, an amazing hike, and we got the most out of it because we had a guide with a plan. As a couple of mediocre Midwest US hikers in 50 year old average fitness bodies, on our first trip to Norway, there is no way we could’ve pulled this off as successfully without Outdoorlife. Highly recommend taking this hike with this small company. One of the best experiences of our whole trip, and not something I will ever forget.

I booked the Beat the Crowds hike to Kjerag and was highly impressed from start to finish. Our group was picked up on time and Johannes was a knowledgeable host and guide. During the hike I felt like my safety was a priority while we enjoyed breathtaking views. The hike is demanding. Be sure you are fit for high intensity cardio. Pack snacks and water. I highly recommend the photography package so you can focus on the scenery. After the hike we had plenty of time to change into dry clothes and grab a take-away meal which I ate on the fary ride. The added boat ride was lovely. Johannes is very knowledgeable about Norway’s history, the geography and the natural landscape. I cannot over-emphasize the attention to detail. When I come back to Norway I will definitely re-book this tour. Thank you for a fantastic experience!

My boyfriend and I joined the “Off the Beaten Path to preik stolen” on aug 5th. It was a great adventure! We followed a very nature and undeveloped path. Sometimes we need to climb very big rocks, which makes the hiking very challenging, especially in rainy days. Luckily, our guides were very professional and kind. They helped a lot during climbing!
Although we were unlucky on that day ( it was raining all the time, we could not see too much) , but the hiking itself was very interesting and exciting! It is an unforgettable experience and highly recommended!

We were a group of 6 young people hiking with our guide Christopher up to the Preikestolen. The hike was tailored for us, completely out of the touristic routes, and the schedule was well respected. He was open and friendly, though very professional. We highly recommend Outdoorlife Norway to anyone who like adventurous hikes ! Price is correct for Norway. If you like to take awsome pictures, it’s the place to go !

I traveled to Stavanger alone just for the Preikestolen. I found Outdoorlife Norway offered a off-beaten tour to Preikestolen. Because I went there in May, some people said it is a bit dangerous to hike there alone. This tour gave me a guide and tour mates which made me feel save, even though the hiking is not easy. I am kind of a beginner, the path is tough and you must need a pair of hiking shoes. But the views of the tour is better than the normal path, there are too many people on the Pulpit Rock. This tour also offers canoeing, but May is still cold in Norway. Last but not least, our guide Christopher is an experienced and strong guide, he brought his dog, Thea, which made the tour more fun!!!

My boyfriend signed us up for the Preikestolen hike without giving me much background information but I can positively attest this Outdoorlife hike was the absolute best piece of our trip to Norway. Our guide, Eric, was fantastic! The hike up was gorgeous and after reaching Pulpit Rock, I am so grateful we did not take the standard hike with the hundreds of other tourists to the top! Physically it was a pleasant challenge but nothing a slightly fit person can’t handle!! I would recommend this trip to anyone!! Can’t wait to go on another adventure!!!

I chose the “Preikestolen off the beaten track hike” for my only day of stay in Stavanger, and I did the right choice! What a wonderful experience!!. I would highly recommend to choose this hike to anyone who wants experience the quietness and the relaxing power of the norwegian nature far away from the noisy crowds walking through the traditional preikestolen track.
My guide for that day was Erlend. He was very professional, nice and helpful and along the route he gave me also useful information about the norwegian flora and fauna and tips how to take the best pics allowing me to appreciate even more the hike. Even if that day was a a bit rainy, i enjoyed so much the hike and being alone with my guide (what a luck!!..) gave me a unique experience of two lone hikers in the middle of nature, which it was exactly what i was looking for.
The hike begun canoeing through a glacial lake near the preikestolhytta, and then went up really off the beaten tracks in the woods toward the fjord ridge. The whole hike requires good physical condition, since there are some steep sections both in the woods and nearby the fjord ridge but it is not that difficult if you had previous hiking experience. Once we reached the Preikestolen i had time to take some pics and enjoy the view, then we started our way down again off the beaten tracks in the woods.
In conclusion if you want a memory lasting experience and not just the selfie on top of the pulpit rock, and above all, if you are really passionate about walking in the quietness of the nature i would highly reccomend to choose this hike.

We booked two hikes, with a day in between. The first, ‘Kjerag beat the crowds’, was a beautiful day topped with the awesome pic of standing on Kjerag boulder. Our guide Sindre was friendly and informative. I accidentally forgot my phone in the van on drop off and got some personalized service from Andrea in the office to deliver it to me the next day. Fantastic. Then a day later we embarked on the Preikestolen Sunrise hike, which departed at 1am. Very novel it was, walking in the dark. It was great to get up there and have photos without the hoards of people normally there. The clouds that morning prevented us seeing the actual sunrise, but visibility down the fjord was great. All in all, these tours are worth it if visiting Stavanger. The cost of doing this yourselves, to rent a car, pay for fuel, pay for ferries, time the ferries appropriately, and then have enough energy to drive, especially after a tiring day of hiking – is just not worth the marginal savings. Easier and safer to just go with these tours and avoid the crowds!

We booked the “off the beaten track”-tour, as the sunrise- tour was not available that day. We did not regret it! Our guide Erland ( sorry to have called you Alan all the time…) was friendly and empathetic and as a studied biologist showed us many interesting things like birds and flowers along the way. The tour started with a fantastic calm and breathtaking ride in the kanus across the lake. We had our two dogs with us who’ve never been on a kanu before but as Erland and the rest of the group were super friendly and helpful we easily made it. We then hiked up quite steeply in nearly untouched nature through a beautiful forest. Some might find this part quite challenging. During the hike Erland provided us with interesting information about the nature around us. Above the tree border we had wonderful views over the lake and fjord. Erland gave everyone enough time to take pictures and we had nice drink&snack breaks with beautiful views. Then there were some challenging climbing parts, where Erland showed us exactly where to put our feet and even lifted the dogs the way up. When we came to the Preikestolen, he showed us the best photo points from above and on the rock itself he took great pictures of us. We spent a wonderful day with Erland and our international ( Brazil Texas Saarbrücken) group in a relaxed and warm atmosphere.
We absolutely recommend this tour to experienced hikers in good condition who want to avoid the crowds. You will love it!
Thank you for this excellent experience!

What a great day! My 19 year old son and I had a great hike with Outdoorlife Norway (OLN). We are not avid hikers but our guide Ehrland did a great job. By going with Outdoorlife we were able to go on a different path than the one used by everyone else. It had little traffic and seemed to be a more interesting trail. We also were able to start our day with a nice canoe ride across a lake – only available with Outdoorlife. Leading into the trip Johannes was very helpful with pre-trip planning and questions. The hike is definitely strenuous but doable. Real hiking boots are a must. I also highly recommend the water/windroof jacket and pants that we rented from OLN. The price is very reasonable and they were very helpful. It was nice doing the hike with some other people. I also highly recommend the photo package. The price was great as were the photos. This was a very special day for us and was made so much better by using Outdoorlife Norway. I highly recommend them.

We went on two separate hiking tours with Outdoorlife Norway – to Preikestolen and Kjeragbolten, and absolutely loved them both! The tours were fun and interesting… both guides were very friendly and informative and taught us a lot about Norway and the nature around the hikes. The trips were beautiful and the tour guides were very good about taking professional photos of us along the way… a wonderful memory of two incredible days!

First at all we canoeing for a while across a beautiful lake and after that, we start to hike for amazings trails, snowy and with amazing views. We reached Preikestolen above itself… we can enjoyed a particular view of this incredible place with the fjord at the end.
I have to thank to Johannes, an amazing and smiley guide, he take care about us and show us a lot of things about this landscapes.

My Son and I (16 and 54) joined the hike – of the beaten track – to Preikestolen with Johannes.
It is of course possible to go to Preikestolen by the beaten track which you probably would rate at an 7 or 8. To make it a 10 you have to experience nature around it, the quietness of the lake, the wet track trough the forrest, the friendly frog in the woods, the climbing over rocks and the spectacular views over the Lysefjord and surrounding mountains. You won’t forget having lunch at edge of a clif high above everything befor descending down to the crowdy Preikestolen.
Johannes is a very nice guide that will show you nature as it was intended.

I booked for Preikestolen off-the-beaten track hike with Outdoor Life Norway, the pick-up time started early at 7:10am and the hike started promptly. Erlend, our guide was very professional, patient, informative and on-time, I really enjoyed the hike especially because of the beautiful spots overlooking the fjords where our guide took us and he was very informative & patient all throughout the hike. I was also lucky to have a friendly and cool group during this hike, now I gained another set of great friends! We had breaks along the way to wait for others to catch-up and our guide gave us some ideas about the plant species we passed by along the way (some of them are edible and tastes like green apple), another new learning for me. Seeing the beautiful sceneries is breath-taking plus a great guide made this hike truly a memorable birthday event for me that I will always cherish in my lifetime. I highly recommend them and definitely will come back for more. Thanks and all the best, cheers!

Almost anyone can hike the main trail to Preikestolen . The advantage of this trip is the extras. A canoe paddle to start; a hike on a rarely used trail that provided vistas of fjords without the hassle of hundreds of people; and a highly entertaining and knowledgeable local guide who gave us inside information on the route, history and flora. Perfect for sporty families, couples and those interested in ‘more’ than just the plain hike itself.

Highly recommend the hike tour to Preikestonlen! The views are stunning although it was a heavy rain when we are on the way back. It doesn’t destroy the mood. The guide, Erlend is so nice, he did explained a lot to us about Stavanger and also the nature there. Along the hiking routes to the rock, we saw 2 little frogs and nice plants and flowers as well. The guide also helped us to take some nice picture so you can buy from the link that they provided!

I would recommend the hike to Preikestolen with Outdoorlife Norway for everyone looking for a one day trip in the fjord from Stavanger. The trail is away from the main touristic one and you are really immersed into the wilderness, away from the crowds of the public path (that day there were hundreds of people walking up this trail!).

The hike is not super difficult but you have to be attentive to where you walk as there is no track to follow. Also, I recommend wearing long pants and waterproof shoes as you are literally walking in the bush. Our guide Eric was really good and gave us insights of the Lysefjord, especially one place where you have a 360 viewpoint on the fjord, which is not accessible from the public trail. The view above the Preikestolen is stunning, far better than from the rock itself!

We have of course walked to the famous spot and hiked a bit on the main trail with the crowds (so glad we didn’t go this way!) and then left it to go back off the beaten track.

This is one of the best hike I have ever done: perfect for nature lovers and adventurers! I am looking forward to going back to Norway and do more hikes like this one

This Preikestolen hike is MUCH MUCH MUCH better than the normal route that you would take from the visitor center. A short canoe trip takes you to a long forgotten rustic trail that is not for the beginners, but was fantastic for experienced hikers. After a challenging and very diverse climb, we had some excellent viewpoints. At one point we could see the entire LyseFjord- a far better view than you get from Preikestolen, which is lower and packed with people. We made our obligatory stop there, and then had an interesting trip down, again avoiding the crowds on private trails.

The guides were fantastic, giving us interesting local and biological facts.

Overall one of the best hikes I’ve ever been on, and one that is FAR BETTER with this guide group than if you were to do it on your own following hundreds of people like cattle in the public trail. Do this one!!

Johannes was a great and fun guide who clearly loves what he is doing! You have to work for the views with this hike but it’s so worth it especially missing the crowds along the hiking trail. This was my favorite hike we did in Norway and I’d recommend it in a heartbeat to anyone deciding!

We would recommend this hike to anyone wanting to see the pulpit rock as it is so totally worth the money. The hike is good, canoeing is awesome and the scenery through the hike is breath taking. Lyseford views that you get in this hike are out of this world. It’s a long tiring day but you won’t realize it as you will be so amazed by the scenic beauty. Would definitely recommend outdoor life off the beaten path

I woke up early in the morning and I looked through the window and I saw clouds, rain, and wind… Fantastic day to hike isn’t it?
But the weather and the challenging conditions make the experience unforgettable and after all my effort, in recompense, I saw the amazing pulpit rock and the fiord! The weather at the end gave the fiord a special charm, I was very happy despite of getting up really early!

Johannes and Sol walked with me all day long and from here I would like to thank them for the grate job and wonderful day I spent. They are very professional guides, friendly and you will be captured by their enthusiasm for the nature. I did the “Preikestolen Hike – Off The Beaten Track” and I strongly recommend it, as you have completely different point of view of the fiord and the pulpit rock avoiding the standard path. It is an exceptional experience and it is worth doing it. Also, the trip it is very organized and you don’t have to worry about transportation, bus schedules, boats, parking… You just have to enjoy. You will not regret.

Our trip with Johannes was unforgettable, we had a fabulous time exploring the countryside around Pulpit Rock with some beautiful views of the lake, Fjords and rock itself which you wouldn’t get anywhere else and which were way superior to the usual route. We are reasonably fit, and this walk was a little testing at times, but Johannes was great at adapting to our pace and gave us a lot of knowledge about the local countryside & formation also. While in Norway we did two trips with Outdoorlife Norway and had an incredible experience on both adventures.

Our first adventure was the “Preikestolen Hike – Off The Beaten Track” which took us across a beautiful mountain lake by canoe then up through a densely populated forest filled with lush green trees and moss covered rocks before rising above tree line to a high alpine environment with scenic overlooks and misty mountain tops.

The hike was appropriately rated “advanced” requiring good physical health and basic hiking skills. There are a few sections that require you to scramble your way up, over, and under rocks which make it for a fun yet challenging adventure you won’t forget. Anyone can hike up the well marked trail to Preikestolen but you won’t find this off the beaton path experience without the guidance of Outdoorlife Norway.

Our second adventure was the “Stavanger Snowshoe Hike” which in comparison to the “Off The Beaton Path” adventure a shorter distance and less challenging yet still very beautiful and unique adventure. If you haven’t snowshoed before don’t worry it’s fairly easy to pick up and I’d feel comfortable recommending this to a variety of skill levels.

No matter what skill level you are I’d highly recommend packing for weather that can most definitely change over the course of your trip. While we were visiting in the off season of late April we encountered rain, snow, sleet, sun, and strong winds so it’s important to pack a waterproof jacket, light down or fleece insulator, gloves, sunglasses, winter hat, as well as a pair of waterproof hiking boots and pants, plus some snacks and water to enjoy along the way! If you don’t have this gear you can rent it through Outdoorlife Norway at a very reasonable rate.

Two thumbs up and high fives all around to Outdoorlife Norway Guides Johannes and Erlend for making our trip one we’ll never forget!

It’s been a month and i’m still buzzing from the breathtaking views and fantastic experience from the hike. My brother and i, happened to stumble across this website trying to find a unique tour of the Lysefjord and i am 100% glad that we did!
The group size is perfect; you are introduced to some fantastic people, something that is less likely to happen in a large and overcrowded group. You meet Johannes, an outstanding man of the great outdoors: experienced, patient, accommodating and at times witty!
We enjoyed everything and i mean EVERYTHING! From booking to our car meeting; caneoing to hiking (LORD OF THE RINGS QUOTES IS A MUST). How much more can i praise this hike, other than by you going there and experiencing it yourself?!

Half way through the tour i lost my phone in the middle of nowhere. Annoyed and distressed as i was, i didn’t let it dampen my spirits.
A well thought out trail with the expertise of our guide, you felt you really were experiencing hiking at its best.

The next day my brother received a phone call, Johannes, Thomas and their guide group found my phone! Seriously, what were the chances! It was the cherry on top of a fantastic trip!

I can’t thank you enough! X
As i write this review i am using the same phone, that was lost and found by the Outdoorlife Norway gang.

If you’re looking for something different, like meeting new people, up for a challenge and seeing Norway’s beauty off the ‘beaten track,’ then book these guys. 100%.

A trip for me next year is on order!

I got in touch with Johannes after reading trip advisor reviews and I am so glad they had been written. We wanted to see the fjords on our trip to Norway and I could not think of a better way to see them. This was a trip of a lifetime as we took a unique route up the mountains far away from the crowds. Johannes was very well equipped with everything we needed for the demanding but truly rewarding hike and his organisation and knowledge of the area was seamless. I could not recommend a trip with Joannes more, what a way to explore Norway!

Outdoor Life Norway was the best investment into a vacation that I’ve ever made! I booked a few hikes with Johannes that were all very rewarding and wonderful. I could’ve done the typical tourist-packed trips through typical places, but instead I chose to go with Johannes’ services which provided very small-group tours to the best locations and also provided wonderful…

Loved this way up to the rock! Starting off with the calm and gorgeous kayaking across the lake then heading up through different terrains was super fun! The first part was mossy forest then onto the open rocky areas where you saw a totally different view of the lake and back into the bay of Stavanger and then the incredible views of the fjords at the top. I’m a pretty serious hiker and this was easy at the beginning, slightly challenging at the top for scrambling on about 20 feet of rocks then super easy after that and ALL of it was enjoyable and rewarding. I did the Sunrise hike before this Off the Beaten Path hike and BOTH are highly recommended.

The new track starts with a funny and relaxing canoe trip, and then we started the trail… The views and the path itself were incredible, and Johannes makes it even better with his help, snacks, explanations, jokes and advises… We didnot see anyone until we reached Preikestolen, what makes it more interesting. I enjoyed it a lot and was my best experience in Norway, completely different and worthy. Thanks Johannes for this great day we spent together !!

Climbing to Preikestolen “off the beaten path” was one of the most memorable hikes of our lives! Our guide, Johannes, was knowledgeable and competent. His anecdotes about the geological and natural history of this stunning site only added to the exhilarating experience of seeing the Lysefjord from that spectacular view. This experience truly allowed us to appreciate the beauty of the Norwegian landscape!

This is an unforgettable, beautiful hike. Join it, and you will experience the contrast between part 1 of the hike with his silence, great smell, taste & beautiful points of views (for about 3hours). You meet no other people…..and the crazy part 2 when you see and meet all the tourist on Preikenstolen. A big contrast we will never forget.
What a fantastic hike!! Special txs to guide Johannes

My son Cas and I joint guide Johannes for a hike ‘off the beaten tracks to Preikenstolen’. It became an unforgettable one. Along the first part we only saw the beauty of nature, silence & a great fresh smell. After 3 hours we climbed over the mountain top and saw the ‘madness’ on the Preikenstolen. We joined them. The contrast with part 2 couldn’t be bigger!!
You are crazy when you don’t book this tour. Seeing the Preikenstolen only from the tourist route is a crazy thing to do. So join Johannes from Outdoorlife Norway and experience this contrast yourself.
Ps: train yourself first at home. A good condition of your body is needed🙂 preikestolen hike “off the beaten track” - Preikestolen Hike Off The Beaten Track - 1f642

I decided to take the “Off the beaten track hike”. When I read the description this was exactly what I was after and it did not fail to deliver! This was my first ever hike and a great one at that. We canoed across the lake with not a soul around on the first leg of the hike. During the hike up to Pulpit rock we did not see a soul until we reached the top. This is truly off the beaten track, the ONLY way to experience it. Johannes was an excellent guide with great knowledge of the trail and local wildlife. It was a challenging and rewarding hike which Johannes sprinkled with humour along the way.

An adventurous trip with amazing views, starting with canoeing on quiet Refsvatn Lake with a brief introduction on the landscape formation and hike up the mountain via the off beaten track. On this side of the mountain we can stay away from the crowd and enjoy the mountain by ourselves until we reach to the top and get down to the Perikestolen. It is an unforgettable experience. This hike is a challenging one but it’s all worth it. Highly recommended to anyone who would like to have different experience to the Preikestolen.

What a wonderful exhausting day!

If you like to enjoy fresh air, stunning nature off the turist main road, I will definitely recommand this daytrip.

Together with my daugther we joined Johannes for a daytrip to Preikestolen. Even though we’re from Norway, we’ve never been at Preikestolen, and decided to take this alternative guided hiking tour. I must admit I had a second though about being guided by a guy from the pancake-flat Netherlands, climbing up to Preikestolen,, but after few minutes I forgot all about that. Johannes is a great wildlife guide, being more out climbing and hiking than most of us Norwegians. (Pfffft.)
I took the responsibilty and was the last one in the group.

The tour included everything: pick-up at the hotel, 30min ferry with coffe, nice chat. Cano over a nice water, hiking during a old forrest up to the mountain. Spectacular view over the Northsee, Stavanger and the fjords. Very gooood pics!

Johannes is a hardworking nice and caring guide, easy to connect with. Go ahead!

I really enjoyed this hike. Especially knowing that you hiking in the quietness while not far away from the crowd. Starting with canoe was relaxing before the start of a hike that had some challenging parts with a little bit of climbing. Nice views of the fjord and the sea. A must do if you want to experience the Preikestolen in a different way!

This was a beautiful, challenging hike, and truly off the beaten track! I loved being able to experience solitude on a mountain that can otherwise be very crowded, and see the mountain from the side that most of the regular tourist will not get to see. A true gem of a hike and an unforgettable experience!
