Preikestolen, better known as Pulpit Rock, has a reputation for being one of the world’s most spectacular scenic viewpoints. On an annual basis, the iconic plateau welcomes more visitors than any other trekking-destination in Norway. In 2019, more than 300,000 hikers are expected to make their way up the trail to Preikestolen. From atop the 604-meter-high cliff, the panoramic views of the Lysefjord and surrounding mountains are some of the most impressive Fjord-Norway has to offer.

In 2020, the port of Stavanger will welcome approximately 200 cruise ships that will be anchored long enough to make it possible for their passengers to visit Preikestolen. The mainstream Preikestolen tours that are sold onboard cruise ships consist more often than not of large groups of passengers that experience Preikestolen as a massive group. At Outdoorlife Norway, which locally based in Stavanger, we’re committed to doing things differently. Our Preikestolen Shore Excursion offers cruise chip passengers an authentic, small-group tour that’s hassle-free and intimate. Book your tickets in advance to secure your spot on a hike to the Lysefjord’s most iconic natural landmark.

After being picked up as close to your cruise ship as possible, your adventure will begin with a 30-minute transfer to the base of the hiking trail, including driving the world’s longest undersea road tunnel. After a short briefing, you’ll embark on your hike to Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock). Your guide will lead you up through shifting terrain that, depending on the season, may be vibrantly green, or shades of yellow, orange, and red. Each season is unique, and offers guests a different perspective of the Lysefjord. In October, November, and December, snow should be expected.

Along the route, while passing lakes, forests, and bogs, you’ll stop at numerous vantage points, which offer great views of the surrounding mountains. You’ll also be given ample opportunities to snap photos of the spectacular nature around you. As you leave the forests behind, your guide will lead you onward to the mountain’s plateau. After 2-3 hours of hiking, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of some of the most dramatic scenery Fjord-Norway has to offer. From atop the 604-meter-high cliff, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Lysefjord and its surrounding mountains.

After a snack and warm beverage at the cliff’s edge, your guide will lead to back down to the trailhead, which will take about 2 hours. If conditions allow, your guide will navigate down along an alternative trail. This route, which is not found on any maps, avoids people hiking up the main trail to Preikestolen, and offers visitors a more secluded experience.

Post-hike, you’ll be transported back to Stavanger and dropped off right in front of your cruise ship, with enough time to spare for reboarding the ship.
