Outdoorlife Norway invites you to experience a unique Preikestolen hiking adventure! Early in the year, you can delight in the crisp stillness of Norway’s long, dark winter. You’ll hike in near-solitude while encountering breathtaking views of Preikestolen and the Lysefjord, which are often blanketed in snow and ice. As springtime approaches, bright green foliage starts sprouting up through the snow and the Lysefjord begins its yearly transformation into a green fjord oasis. The busy summer season may be just around the corner, but visitor numbers remain low. Grab the chance to beat the crowds and enjoy Preikestolen and the Lysefjord during the serenity of Norway’s winter and spring.

After an early-morning pick-up, your adventure will begin with a 30-minute transfer to the base of the hiking trail, including driving the world´s longest undersea road tunnel. After a short briefing at the trailhead, you’ll embark on your journey to Preikestolen. Your guide will lead you up through the shifting terrain and onward to the mountain’s plateau. Along the way, when trail conditions permit, you’ll hike to lesser-known, exclusive viewpoints. This early in the year, weather conditions are constantly changing and the trail is often covered with snow and ice, even well into springtime. As needed, you’ll adjust the equipment (ice spikes, etc.) to match the changes in terrain. Along the way, there will be opportunities to catch your breath, enjoy a warm beverage, and snap photos of the spectacular nature around you.

After 2.5-3.5 hours* of trekking, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of some of the most dramatic scenery Fjord-Norway has to offer. Standing atop the 604-meter-high cliff, the views of the Lysefjord and surrounding mountains are nothing short of awe-inspiring. You’ll be one of the few that have experienced Preikestolen off-season.

After a well-deserved break at the cliff’s edge, your guide will lead you back down to the trail-head, which will take about 2 hours. If conditions allow, your guide will take a slightly different route on the way back down from Preikestolen. This alternative path is not found on any maps, and will, therefore, allow you to avoid anyone who might be on their way up the main trail.  Once at the trailhead, and after a few last breaths of crisp mountain air, you’ll return as a group to Stavanger.

TIP | spending the night at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge is highly recommended – whether it be the night before or the night after our hike.

Because of the presence of snow and ice, hiking to Preikestolen without a guide during the wintertime (January – March) is not recommended. Our professional guides are trained to safely maneuver through the frozen landscape as well as winter’s rapidly changing weather conditions. They carry with them all necessary navigation, safety, first-aid, and outdoor winter equipment.

Magic day

Our guide was full of life and love of Norway. She divided the walk into sections with breaks and information so it was easily managed and I didn’t feel overwhelmed. She was calm and sensible. Because it was out of season, we had ample opportunities to stop, look around, chat and savour our experience. There were very few people climbing that day. We were provided with snow spikes and poles which helped enormously. It was a lovely day and too hot for all the clothing layers recommended! The soup provided at the end was welcome and good.

We had an amazing time on our hike to Pulpit Rock. Even though the weather was horrendous we made it to the top safely before the fog rolled in and got some awesome photos. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide. Sal was extremely professional and took great care of us. Truly an unforgettable experience!

Picturesque Winter View

I did the hike with OLN in early March. The guided tour includes not just a simple guide, but also equipments you may need as well as hot drinks! Cramp-ons and hiking poles definitely saved my knees on our way down the mountain. The guy (Ties) at the Hiker’s cafe was really kind and he provided good advice.

Great trip

I had a really great time on this trip. We did get really lucky with the weather – blue sky and sun, as well as snow on the ground! At the top there were around ten people which made the experience even better. Our guide Hilde and her dog Molli were great guides. I never felt rushed, and Hilde was always happy to answers questions and share information with us. I would highly recommend booking with them, especially during the offseason as it can be helpful depending on the weather.

Phenomenal experience! A must do!

My girlfriend and I did the winter hike on march 2nd, and it is without a doubt the most incredible experience we’ve had outdoors.
The company is very professional, communicating with us beforehand to make sure that we had all the necessary equipment and giving us advice on what to expect.

The pickup at the hotel was on time. There were 6 of us on the hike plus the guide, Salvatore. Sal was wonderful and knowledgeable , helping us navigate safely through the snow and even taking us along a lesser-known path showing us additional spots normally not seen on the regular hike. He was very friendly and patient and helped establish good rapport among the members of out groupmost of which who did not know each other before the hike. That made it even more enjoyable.

And the views, oh my, it’s hard to describe how fantastic they were. That in in and on itself made all the walking worth it.

The level of physical fitness required was moderate, requiring effort but not exhausting by any means. I think the guide had a lot to donwhith that. A perfect first winter hike.

I also proposed to my girlfriend once we got to the top of Preikestolen (thanks to Sal and the the group for helping by the way!) which made it that much more special, just wonderful!

The hike back was great as well. We took the regular trail back, taking in new sights which helped with fatigue as we kept seeing new sights for most of the way back.

They give you hot tea at the top (very welcome) and delicious soup and bread after we returned to the company offices at the star of the hike.

All in all, we’d recommend the tour and Outdoorlife Norway a million times over.

Thank you for making our trip an unforgettable experience!

It was a great day full of impressions. Everything went great right from the start. The drive to Preikestolen was very entertaining. Our group was a nice mix of young and middle-aged people. We made ourselves known during the trip, so you knew a little bit more about the participants. The new underwater tunnel is impressive and our guide Fabrizio was very open, talkative and did a great job. We were exposed to all kinds of weather, such as sleet, snow, hail, wind. Unfortunately the visibility was poor, meaning the fjord had disappeared behind a gray fog wall. Nevertheless it was great fun and I can only recommend it to anyone interested in hiking.

Da fare!

Ho partecipato all’escursione a fine febbraio.

The hike was truly one of the most amazing experiences of my life I couldn’t recommend it more. Our guide was incredibly friendly and we had a great laugh the whole way up:)

This was a great hike! Our Guide (Alan) was awesome and really knew the landscape! If your planning on hiking to Preikestolen in the off season these guys are essential. From hassle-free pickup/drop off to having the right equipment for the job. However, if looking to hike during summer (peak season)… I would recommend a self guided trip with the trail being more easily accessible. Great experience!

Really informative, felt safe and thoroughly enjoyed the hike. The equipment we rented was all good too, they managed to equip us before the hike. They have all sizes so you don’t need to worry if you don’t have. Beautiful scenery, soup afterwards was tasty.

I enjoyed all the contents of the tour even though the weather was not great. It was cloudy all the way to the top of the cliff, but only in a moment the thick cloud had gone and we could look down on the fjord clearly from the edge. Although on our way back the weather was getting worse, we came back to the place we started before the worst and heaviest rain thanks to our guide.

We had a fantastic hike up to Preikestolen yesterday, the trail is beautiful and due to the different undulations the scenery was ever changing. The mountain lakes were relaxing and it felt almost like being on another planet! Our Guide Fabrizio was very informative and made everyone feel welcome, we would recommend this hike to everyone visiting Norway and in itself as a reason for visiting Norway!

Niesamowite doświadczenie dzikiej natury w zimowej scenerii. Transport sprzed i do hotelu. Wycieczka absolutnie warta swojej ceny i godna polecenia!

The best hiking experience ever!

This was definitely the highlight of my trip to Norway! I was picked up close to my hotel in downtown Stavanger around 7 in the morning and joined a small group of 6 people. We were driven to the trailhead in a comfortable van (included ride on the ferry). Our guide Johannes was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. We were also lucky enough to have a perfect weather for the hike that day. We got to enjoy some truly incredible views on our way up that few people get to see, thanks to Johannes and his familiarity with every nook and cranny on the route. The hike itself was easy-to-moderate and took about 2-2.5 hours to get to Pulpit Rock, including several short breaks. Every stop along the way was photo worthy! Johannes also had some light snacks and beverages for us. Once on the top, it was absolutely surreal! The view of Lysefjord – its turquoise waters and the steep mountains was just breathtaking! We spent about an hour here taking in the views. On the way down, we used the steps made by sherpas. We briefly stopped at the Swords in Rock monument on our way back to Stavanger, and were dropped off at our respective hotels around 5 pm. I can’t thank Johannes enough for this one of a kind experience. This hike is a must do, not too hard and very rewarding; and I highly recommend Outdoor Life Norway!

The best family hike in Norway

My family did the Preikestolen winter hike just after Easter 2019. The three of us were the only group on the tour that was run by the Outdoor Life owner, Johannes. His love of nature and the outdoors was infectious and addictive. Due to our early pickup and small group, Johannes modified the usual journey to include some special extras.

Although it was extremely windy when we approached the summit Johannes ensured that the path was safe enough for us before we proceeded. I was lucky enough to get photos of Pulpit Rock without anyone else on it which I did not think would be possible. The whole experience was mind blowing and unforgettable.

Do this tour with Johannes and his team from Outdoor Life. You won’t regret it.

Johannes, Takk for turen. Keep living the dream.

Beautiful hike, amazing guide, great experience!

Can’t recommend Outdoor Life enough! We were lucky enough to have the owner, Johannes, as our guide, and he was fantastic! We did the hike on a very windy day, and he did a fantastic job of making sure we were safe at all time. He was good at gauging the skill/fitness level of the group and adjusting for it. He was super friendly, funny, and gave us a lot of interesting information along the way. The snack and hot beverage at the top was nice, and the soup at the lodge after was very tasty! This hike was a highlight of my trip, and if you want to hike Preikestolen, do it with Outdoor Life!

Guidede tour to Priekestolen

Johannes provided our group of 6 with a wonderful day from Stavanger to Preikestolen. Hotel pickup and ferry schedule accounted for and all food bar lunch. Johannes was able to provide a wealth of information about Norwegian culture, farming practices and nature. The walk to the top was well paced with stops appropriate for all members of our group. I would highly recommend this tour company.

Hilda y Molly (The Best Dog of the World), nos recogieron a la hora concretada en nuestro alojamiento.

Fantastic hike to Preikestolen in April

This was without a doubt one of the main highlights of my 8-day trip to beautiful Norway. Going for a hike in low season has its own perks. We were a small group of four plus our fantastic guide ERLEND. We were picked up at 7am sharp, as planned, and smoothly taken by car and ferry to the starting point of the trek. Erlend came prepared with hot coffee and nibbles for everyone and also with hiking poles and raining clothing (just in case some would need it). The trek is very well managed and Erlend told us the story of Sherpa workers that come during the winter and work on maintaining the route. Erlend also came equipped with a professional camera and at the end I had lots of photos that looked much better than any selfie I would ever take. Erlend is also very knowledgeable about nature (birds and plants alike) and you get to learn many interesting things along the way up. The hike is fairly easy for anyone that is in reasonable good shape. The views get better and better and once you reach the Preikestolen rock they become breathtakingly beautiful. On the way back we stopped for a hot soup (included) and then for a short history lesson at the three swords monument. Amazing day, amazing guide, stunning views!

Great guides

Preikestolen is an easy hike as evidenced by the locals easily scaling the boulders with minimal equipment. However, we would still recommend Outdoorlife for a few reasons:
1) We were novice hikers, city dwellers and the extra equipment they provided turned out to be very helpful for people like us
2) They specialize in hiking times that are specifically meant to avoid the crowds. We did the winter hike whilst i also understand they do the overnight hikes to catch the sunrise. The terrain might be far more challenging during these times and i do feel safer with a guide
3) Our guides Erlend and Fabrizio were extremely friendly, punctual and helpful, providing commentary and encouragement all along the way

The views at the top were amazing!! We were lucky with the weather 🙂

Breathtaking experience provided with excellence by amazing professionals

We, the two of us, absolutely love this winter hike to Preikestolen. Two days before, we looked up the weather forecast and it was supposed to rain a lot. We, then, decided to cancel as it would probably be horrible, but Outdoorlife Norway responded (very fast) that some other clients had done the trek under the same conditions and they were happy with it. So we decided to go with the original plan and that was the best thing we could have ever done. They arrived in time (6:55am) and it was just us 2, Hilde, her sweet dog Molly and her good and nice friend Christine. As we arrived there, the weather was good and we started going up. Hilde, let me tell you, is one of the best guides we have ever known. She is very knowledgable and a very nice company. The photos she took were simply amazing! It turns out that it didn’t rain as much as we thought (only 2 brief moments before we got to Preikestolen and it was a light rain). We had Preikestolen all to ourselves when we got there. The winter scenery is fantastic. The light over the fjord was so, so beautiful! It was a highlight of our trip through Norway and one of the most beautiful places we have ever been. Couldn’t be happier and couldn’t thank Hilde and Molly more for this trip. THANKS! 100% recommended.

I went to Stavanger for hiking in winter to the Preikestolen with my son of 14 years old. I was very happy to choose a guide. Our Outdoorlife Norway guide was very professional, experienced, respectful. Everything was planed (transport, lunchbox, equipment, …). The experience was perfect. Sad that the Prekeistolen is so far because this guided experience gives the wish to do it again.

Pulpit Rock Winter Hike

An unforgettable hike and one of the highlights of my trip to Norway. The guide I had was Fabrizio, he was fantastic and was very knowledgeable in the hike. We spent roughly an hour at Pulpit Rock, taking pictures and Wow the view with the fjord in the background was breathtaking. We even got the opportunity to climb above pulpit rock to get a different angle. To top of the day, Fabrizio took us to Sverd i fjell (3 sword) to get picture on our way back.

Hike to Preikestolen

Had a Wonderful experience hiking up preikestolen. Joined a small group (4) for a daytime hike. Pickup from the hotel downtown Stavanger was just after 7am and drop off around 16:30. Our guide Hilde was very kind, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. She was sure to keep up the pace, but with plenty of breaks, to help us reach the top before the crowds did. It was even more rewarding to find ourselves at the edge alone on a beautiful day. Hilde took some nice pictures and was a joy to talk to and she also brought some snacks and hot drinks.

The information given by email after booking online is pretty clear and tells you to read it well ahead of the hike. I left it till the night before as I had just only booked that evening. Make sure to wear the proper gear, hiking pants and boots and weatherproof yet breathable outer layers. I showed up with all but the hiking pants and wearing jeans instead. I was kindly asked to rent a pair op proper pants from outdoor life Norway. There is a little waredrobe in the back of the van. They come well prepared and are serious about their gear.

I will try and book with them again for a different trip when I get the chance.

This hike was amazing! Would definitely recommend it and do it again. The views were amazing and the fjord is breathtaking, I have never seen anything more beautiful. Our guid Hilde was perfect. ‘Takk for turen’

The day was perfect from start to finish. Our guide, Hilde, was very helpful and kind. From the moment she caught us in Stavanger till the end of the journey. She explained various curiosities and facts at different points, making the trail more interesting at every moment. The trail was slippery at some points because of the ice, but Hilde provided us with staples for extra safety. The arrival at the preikestolen could not have been better, with only our group on top. On the way back, a stop at the base camp for a delicious soup at all and a beautiful view of the lake and farm. Thank you Hilde!

Unforgetable experience

Had a great experience doing the Preikestolen winter hike with Outdoorlife Norway. I sent them some questions before booking the tour and got a quick, kind and detailed reply. They are really helpful and even took the time and effort to organize their schedule in a way that I could hike with the cutest guide dog Molli, as I requested. We got clear and useful information both before and during the tour. It is very well organized, our guide Hilde was fantastic. She is really kind, patient and talkative. She took a good care of us and shared many interesting stories along the way. The whole hiking experince is unforgetable and what you see during the hike is priceless. For sure will return for another round! 🙂

World class views and tour.

Fantastic experience. I was hoping it wouldn’t just be me on the tour being so off-peak, and sure enough it was, but the trip couldn’t have been better. My guide Hilde was a fantastic travelling companion and skilful guide, with great depth of knowledge about the environment and Norway, and a good sense of fun. I had all the time I wanted to fiddle with my cameras and soak up the views, and we were very lucky to have Priekestolen all to ourselves. She also provided me with crampons, poles and better gloves for the weather. Worth mentioning that soup was provided as part of the package – I thought I had to bring a packed lunch – and even that was really high quality and delicious, served with amazing views of the lake in the base camp lodge. Overall a really special experience that I’d recommend to everyone. Thanks again Hilde, I hope I remembered this right – “Takk for turen!” 🙂

Winter hike to Preikestolen

I was traveling alone for business and wanted to make the most of a free day in Stavanger. I signed up for the winter hike to Preikestolen. The registration process was very simple and the communication was excellent. I knew exactly what I needed to bring. They also have items to rent if you are missing something, such as crampons, hiking boots, jackets. The pick up and transportation was also very convenient.

I had previously done this hike in the summer with thousands of others. It was such a pleasant contrast to do it in the winter when you have the mountain mostly to yourself. Our guide, Hilde, was excellent. She was knowledgeable and prepared with safety equipment should that have been necessary.

If you are in Stavanger, I would highly recommend doing this tour to get a taste of some of the best nature Norway has to offer.

Had an awesome hike with the most lovely guide and her dog! She told us a lot of little funfacts throughout the hike and had some delicious hot black current juice when we arrived at the top!! Would definitely recommend to do this beautiful hike with this lovely little company!

Priekestolen winter hike

We booked with Outdoorlife Norway ahead of our recent weekend trip to Stavanger to experience Priekestolen. The whole booking process was excellent and very clear and our guide Hilde was at the meeting point right on time. The weather was good ; fresh snow (windy) and ice underfoot. Ice spikes and poles provided by Hilde were essential. Our guide was very passionate and knowledgable on all aspects of the route, conditions and the environment and timed our walk so that our small group had the final summit to ourselves. Great for photo opportunities and stunning views! The additional photo options from our guide was well worth the additional cost. In summary this was a first class experience. As experienced walkers in the UK we have a healthy respect for the changeable conditions in mountainous terrain and in our opinion use of a local guide in unfamiliar winter terrain was a no-brainer. Thanks to Hilde for providing such a fabulous commentary & all round experience. A small but very professional outdoor company that certainly exceeded our expectations. Thanks Hilde (and Molli the dog!) and well done Ourdoorlife Norway! Hope to be back to see Norway in the summer!

Snowy winter hike up Preikestolen

Despite the freezing weather conditions and high winds, we made it to the top in one piece all thanks to our amazing guide, Hilda! Although we went in the low season and were the only couple on the guided tour with Hilda and her amazing dog, Mollie, we would definitely recommend this hike in the winter season as the snow and ice made it more of a memorable and scenic experience.

Couldn’t have had a better experience. Our guide Hilda was beyond lovely, incredibly informative and created a wonderful day for everyone on the hike. This was possibly one of the best experiences we could have had on our holiday and would recommend it to everyone.

Amazing Hike!

We booked the Preikestolen Winter Hike and it was just amazing! At Pickup, the guide told us that there are just the two of us, so we had kind of a private tour.
The Guide was prepared very well so we had Spikes and good shoes and poles to hike. Even if it was slippery and full of snow and ice we felt totaly safe all the time. On top, the guide served us some hot drink.
Everything was absolutely worth the money we payed for! Totaly recommend!

Preikestolen in the fog

What a fantastic experience! Although the weather was ‘a bit’ foggy and we could not see the surroundings, this hike was a very nice one. Hilde, our tourguide, took good care of us and showed all the beauty of her territory.
If we ever come back to Stavanger, we would definitely book this trip (or any other) again with Outdoorlife Norway.

Preseason Preikestolen Hike

Must go if youre visiting Norway. Johannes is a great guide, the tour was very enjoyable, I went with fairly fit group so we kept a nice pace, had enough time to chill and go to another viewpoint as per our guide suggestion, if you ask me that was the highlight of the visit.

Thank you!

A wonderful day exploring a beautiful part of the world

Everything about this trip exceeded expectations – from the initial pick up to the end of the day. It was challenging in parts, mostly due to the amount of ice and strong winds – but I felt safe and encouraged throughout by our wonderful guide Mathilde. Whilst I would certainly feel fine to tackle the walk alone in the summer months, the ice meant it would have been quite unsafe for me to do alone at that time of year (mid April). Mathilde was superb – knowledgeable, passionate and considerate at all times. And the views from the top were amazing. A great day out and highly recommended.

Preikestolen Spring Hike

Breathtaking hike and absolutely exceptionaI service from the guides. I cannot say enough good things about Johannes and the rest of the Outdoorlife Norway team. The guides were genuinely friendly and seemed excited to share this beautiful landscape with us. The patience and encouragement offered to my wife (hiking with a minor foot issue) and the rest of our group left a strong impression with me.

Experiencing this incredible landscape is a memory that will remain with me forever. I highly recommend this outfit and the Preikestolen Spring Hike if you’re looking for outdoor activity near Stavanger.

Preikestolen Spring Hike

I did the Preikestolen Spring hike with Outdoorlife Norway. Everything was organised perfectly. Our guide Hilde was excellent – super friendly, knowledgeable, patient and mindful of everyone’s safety. She made our hike that much more special by sharing with us her love of nature. A shout-out to our second guide – Molly the beautiful husky! Our driver was incredibly nice as well (offering some delicious coffee early in the morning served the ‘Norway way’). The small group set this tour apart from other providers – and allowed for a more personal experience (Hilde for example, coordinated introductions early on so that everyone could meet each other). The hike itself this time of the year is fantastic – as it’s off season there were no crowds (which is apparently the case in the summer). The views are beyond words. Thank-you Outdoorlife Norway for a fantastically organised trip! (And thank-you for being one of the few tour operators that ran a tour despite the ongoing ‘Norway Tourism Workshop’, very professional – everyone else seemed to not be doing anything on those days!) Highly recommend! Tak for turen!

Preikestolen spring hike

Ok, I’m going to be long and effusive. My hike yesterday was a day that will live with me forever and Johanes and his team are responsible. I was super fortunate to be hiking on the day they had the whole team out for a pre-season catch up hike. With only two other tourists we were out numbered by the guides – and these are four of the kindest, warm people you could ever hope to meet.
The hike itself was awesome – the weather was kind and the snow and ice gave us some tests as well as creating a magical landscape.
The guides were so patient, interested in our chat and sensitive to our needs. One of our group had issues with a sore foot and I suffer from vertigo. We were looked after, reassured and supported better than our parents would!
And the payoff – standing on the plateau with those views – is utterly extraordinary. We finished with warm soup and then fond farewells to new friends. I’m writing this in Stavanger airport and seem to have got something in my eye as I recall Johanes, Tilda, Petter, Ignaar(?), the pulpit rock and one of my best days ever. Thank you so much, guys.

Even better than expected!

We did the spring hike and a guide is very important during this time. We had Hilde and she was fantastic. Great company on the hike. Also using theses guy made it super easy – just being picked up and dropped off was great as we had very little time. Highly recommend this company.

I got exactly what I expected, and more. Allen was wonderful as all the reviews state, and the whole hike was zero stress. I got all the photos I wanted, I felt exhilarated, and even on the overcast/snowy day, the hike was beautiful and worth it. Highly recommended to anyone who wants a zero stress hike and wants to see the beauty of the fjords!

Spring Hike to Preikestolen

I did the Spring Guided Tour to Preikestolen with Outdoorlife Norway and it was great!! Our guide was super nice and always ready to help. We went on the last day of March, so we still catched snow and ice on the mountain, and they gave us spikes for our feet, to make the hike easier. In the end of the hike, we had amazing soup down at the lodge.

Nice Preikestolen hike!

We did the Preikestolen spring hike.
It was a very nice experience!
Our guide, Allen, did a great job of guiding the hike and also creating a friendly atmosphere in our group!
Of course the hike itself and the view on the top was memorable.

Over all we really enjoyed this hike and recommend it to everybody!

The awesome and unique.

The infamous Pulpit Rock is nothing short of stunning. The hike to it was not difficult. In March, when I’ve gone there, the weather was very whining. So majority of our hike was done in a foggy and windy environment. Not too bad though.
The rock view was in the fog as well. That day the mountain has decided to hide the view of the Fjord below us as well as the opposite wall of the Fjord. That was a striking view of its own.
The guides were awesome! Molly (the hiking buddy of our group) was running circles around us. She is a very friendly and fit Alaskan Husky. A great gang!

Preikestolen Spring Hike – Amazing!!

I have never written a review on Trip Advisor, but Johannes and his team were exceptional. Our guides were excellent in both their expertise and in their entertainment – we had a very intense, windy hike, and at times the weather was quite discouraging, but our guides were great at making us laugh, and keeping our spirits up. My trip to Norway would not have been as exceptional as it was without this tour, I would not hesitate to take another tour with OutdoorLife!

Preikestolen- Great hike, Amazing view

We did the Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) hike in mid Feb. This was a perfect day for a hike- great exercise and truly impressive view at the top. We loved every minute! The guide will provide boot cleats and walking poles- you will need them! The hike to the top is medium strenuous but incredibly beautiful There are a few areas where the climbing seemed like it was straight up the hillside, but it was so lovely and fun, it was so worth it. Make sure you are at the meeting point on-time and ready to go. The guide and the ferry will not wait. I can’t say enough good things about our guide, the hike, and the view. DO IT!

What an amazing experience!

To say the hike up Pulpit Rock is a winter wonderland is an understatement. Although we didn’t get to see the view at the end, as it was quite foggy, the hike itself offered spectacular sights.

Our guide, Alan, was absolutely great – very funny and knowledgeable. We opted for the photography package and got some beautiful fotos as keepsakes.

Make sure you take in the sights of beautiful Stavanger when you’re on the ferry!

We would happily recommend this tour to anybody!

Winter Hike Preikestolen

I saw the Pulpit Rock on on of those load up screens on your laptop, and when I saw it was only in Norway (not some far-flung corner of the Earth) I decided I had to go. It’s located near Stavanger in the South, and there are cheap direct flights there from the UK. It was definitely worth the trip, this guided hike was excellent. Erlend was our guide, and I felt confident that we were in good hands.

As their blurb says, it’s not recommended to do this hike in Winter without a professional guide, and although we did see the odd person doing just that, I personally would have turned around had I been alone. The first half of the hike has 3 steep ascents, all covered in ice and increasing levels of snow as we got higher, the second half is much less steep, however the snow this high is a couple of feet deep. I’m not the fittest person ever, and I did find parts challenging, but doable.

I chose the package which included a night’s accommodation at the lodge, dinner and breakfast before the hike. I was very pleased with the cost (~£200) which I thought was particularly reasonable by Norway standards. I was the only guest on this particular night, although I imagine it is considerably busier during the season. There were 12 people in my group on the hike however, this is obviously a popular activity even in Winter.

It’s definitely worth making the journey over to Norway, even if this is the only reason for your journey – there’s a real sense of achievement in making it to the top, and even in slightly misty weather, the views are spectacular – a once in a lifetime experience. Thank you Outdoor Life!

What a great experience! Alan picked us up on a rainy and cloudy day, but his sunny personality and awesome sense of humor quickly warmed us up. He was a pleasure to hike with.
I would highly recommend the winter hike to anyone interested in seeing Preikestolen. The final destination is obviously spectacular, but what caught me by surprise was the beauty of the actual hike itself. Gorgeous winter wonderland, and you get to have the whole rock to yourself.
All in all a “bucket list” experience and if I’m ever lucky enough to be in Norway again, I will book something with Outdoorlife Norway again in a heartbeat.

Takk for turen!

An amazing experience totally recommended. Our guide, Alan, picked us up and took us to the ferry, then we headed to preikestolen. The ferry trip goes quite quick, it doesn’t feel like 40 minutes.

Once we got there he explained a few things about the hike and gave us crampons and poles. The path was completely covered with snow. The beginning of the hike is quite impressive and can put you off ( I definitely struggled!).There are three big hills that can be tricky, particularly for us, as the whole path was covered in deep snow. The hike is breath taking, we walked through lakes and valleys to finally get to the rock.

We were lucky enough to be alone up there (apparently in summer is quite crowded) an experience that we appreciated as it feels really special and you are in complete contact with nature. The pictures are just spectacular! Once up there, the weather changes radically, we made it in time to take a couple of pictures with a beautiful sunshine and an spectacular view of the fjord but after that it became quite windy and cloudy. Our guide provided us with a warm drink at the perfect time!
After hiking for 3 hours we wondered how were we going to make it back but the way back to the parking was very easy and enjoyable.
The experience with outdoor Norway was very pleasant and I would definitely book with them again, they give you a true experience of Norway during quiet times and they really seem to care about nature!

Pulpit Rock[s]! Winter Hike Recommended!!

If you’re travelling to the Stavanger Region, this trip is an absolute must! We were bowled over with the service we received from Outdoorlife Norway, our tour guide and the cost of the trip.

It may seem, to those unfamiliar with exchange rates, that 1,090kr is a lot of money to ‘walk up a hill’ but it is, by far, the best £100 I have ever spent. This is the most breath-taking view I have ever witnessed and I am a frequent traveller. The excursion includes: a guided walk, snacks, a hot fruit drink, transport to and from your hotel, a ferry and of course the crampons/poles needed to complete the trek. You can rent other necessary items from the tour operator, either by pre-booking or paying in cash on the day.

It is not an overly challenging hike, but the snow (and the cold) means you need to have the correct equipment. It is important, if not mandatory, that you read the requirements and recommended packing list before you arrive. DO NOT CONSIDER THIS TREK IF YOU ARE UNFIT – you may be asked to return to the lodge for your own, and the group’s safety, and may be left disappointed.

Can’t wait to see the photos taken by Erland (our tour guide). It’s so worth paying a little extra to ensure you have a great set of memories. Judging from the previous albums online, the quality is going to be excellent.

Thanks again, we had a blast!

Excellent winter hiking

I’d always been keen to do Preikestolen in winter having been up on several occasions in summer, but I’ve had little winter hiking experience previously. After a convenient pickup in central Stavanger and a scenic ferry / car journey, our guides on the group trip, Erlend & Johannes made sure we had all the right winter gear and led a very interesting and enjoyable hike to the top. Weather conditions were incredible, and doing this trip in winter is a very different and worthwhile experience, even if you’ve been there before. We even had the bonus of seeing a white-tailed (sea) eagle soaring across the fjord!
I would highly recommend the guided hikes organised by Outdoorlife Norway.

Absolutely fantastic! Friends and family were genuinely concerned that I was gonna go on this hike at winter time. It was so nice to prove them wrong! Our guide Erlend, funny and professional, made sure we had all the necessary gear to get there safely. The weather was stunning with fresh snow, wind still and with a tint of sun. Could not have asked for a better day. Weather can change quickly in Norway, and luckily for us they rescheduled our hike by 1 day as there was a storm brewing, that most likely would have blown us of the edge. Service was prompt and timely, with good old Norwegian folktales in the mix. Would definitely use these guys again for the next mountain I’m afraid to climb on my own!

Magical winter day hike to Preikestolen

I only had one day in Stavanger and had alwast wanted to hike to Preikestolen. Found this little company online that offers hikes yearround.
Picked up and dropped off at my hotel by very friendly and welcoming guide and owner Johannes.
Total group consisted of 6 people. The conditions were fantastic, 25 cm of fresh snow everywhere and sun shining through the trees. Only one person had beaten us to the top, but other than him, we were the only ones there. Some people followed us later on.
Johannes equipped us with spikes under our shoes, walking sticks and a warm beverage on top of the pulpit rock. It was quite a hike for him, plowing through fresh thick snow and making a clear path for us. He clearly marked and cleared snow-hidden crossing creeks, tricky and steep steps. His positive and mindful attitude contributed to a very special experience. I would recommend this company to anyone who wants to truly enjoy Norway’s beautiful nature!

Nice hike, good guide

I would definitely recommend outdoor life Norway. Especially in Winter it is hard to get to the start of the hike, so it is good to be picked up and taken there. While there is snow, the marks that lead the way are hard to find, so it is very useful to have a guide – who was very friendly and competent.

Recommend Preikestolen Winter Hike!!!

Was so happy to find out that you can do the Preikestolen winter guided tour, as I was bit concerned due to the snow and icey conditions, however our tour guide Ole took care of us tremendously. He came with his dog Kenny which added a lot of fun and humour to the trip. There were 7 of us in total, some did not have the appropriate clothing so he suggested and offered his advice. Crampons, poles, and shoes etc were also provided. Ole was very attentive throughout to those less experienced hikers. He also took photos for us and told us the best spots. Hot drink and snacks were also given which were nice. Overall an excellent 3800m hike, recommend it if you come in the winter to avoid the crowds. I willconcur Kjerag next time 🙂

Loved it, fantastic hike

We did the Preikestolen Winter Hike and loved the experience. Johannes, our guide and the owner of the business, was amazing and you could see his passion and love for what he does. He was very patient with everyone in our group, and lots of information about the area to share. While locals might be fine to do the hike by themselves in winter, but for visitors I would recommend the guided hike due to not knowing the track, the conditions, and just the general experience of having someone help you out and keep you informed. We definitely needed the spikes to go over our shoes (the spikes were provided with the tour) to help us get over the ice.
The hike itself wasn’t as strenuous as I’d expected, more just the difficultly of walking across the ice. Anyone who is younger will manage fine, people over 50 or 60 who walk alot and are in decent physical shape will also find it manageable, but maybe more challenging. If you have bad knees, tape them up or get a brace prior to the hike, or have a good management plan afterwards (advice from a physio).
The view from the top certainly makes it worth it.

Once in a life time trip.

I came all the way from Australia for this. If you have a chance to go and do it with outdoor life! My Guide Allan(sorry I forgot the Norge spelling) was fantastic. I was the only one on the hike (which I’m sure they lost money on) but it was no problem. He was funny and very professional. you definitely need a guide. I personally saw one person who had an accident and others wandering off in the wrong direction only to be pulled up by Allen out of concern for their welfare. The hike was amazing and fun and the pay off was the best. We had the rock to our selves! Go in winter and enjoy the ice and snow as well as the lack of crowd. Two days latter I’m still buzzing about one the best experiences of my life. Thank You out door life!!!! I wish I could give more than 5 star review!

Personal and informative!

My friend and I were in Stavanger for 3 days and booked two trips with Johannes – Preikestolen Winter Hike & Winter Snowshoe Hike. Both trips with Johannes were with very small groups (just my friend and I in fact!) which made the experience very personal and memorable. As promised, there were snacks (nuts) and a hot drink (black currant juice) at the top. We came during the off season, so the conditions for the snowshoe hike weren’t great (icy wind) but Johannes reminded us that the goal was get closer to nature – sometimes that’s not comfortable. I would book again with Outdoorlife Norway in a heartbeat, I don’t think there’s any other way to safely explore nature in Norway!

Preikestolen, we visit on beginning of April, that is early of spring and the light rain is on that day. Anyway, we move on for hiking and thanks for proper cloth & waterproof shoes that Alan our guide from Outdoorlife Norway recommend for changing to avoid feeling wet & cold. The way up is not too difficult we can see different beautiful nature along the way. Finally, we reach the top, a hazy view we get and cannot see quite clear for the preikestolen and whole fjord, but anyway we made it. It is a good memory. Thanks again, Alan for our good guide, you are the man for such kind of this job, love & protect nature to last long, and I love warm berry drink you bring & photo you took.

Booking an excursion with Outdoorlife Norway is one of the best decisions you can make. Their easy to use website offers a wide variety of activities for different skill levels. Each page offers a well composed synopsis of what to expect of the tour. The description will include terrain, estimated time frame for activity, and difficulty level. The company was formed and is operated by Johannes, a passionate, optimistic individual who truly enjoys sharing Norway’s outdoor beauty with everyone. With a strong background in tourism, Johannes makes each tour as informational as much as it is fun. And ladies, it doesn’t hurt that he is quite handsome! Erland, another guide with Outdoorlife Norway adds a great dimension with his background in Biology. It was fascinating to learn about local flora and fauna. The company also offers photos with each tour to capture those once in a lifetime experiences. All in all, if you want to see some beautiful destinations and earn those views, Outdoorlife Norway is a must! You will not regret it.

It was my first time to hike, actually climb huge rocks. My hiking experience was limited to gentle ascends and forest floors. My guide, Johanes, was very patient, ensuring not only I made it to the summit, but also enjoyed the climb. The scenery was breath taking. I also enjoyed learning about the history of the fjords, local legends, anecdotes. Johnaes took great pictures, and introduced us to a typical soup served in Norway. The hike was well organized and enjoyable.

It wasn’t easy trying to figure out how exactly to get to Preikestolen via google search or trying to determine what the conditions were going to be like in early spring. I wasn’t able to find anything with specific dates or confirming whether buses were running or to let me know if I needed to bring crampons, for example. So I totally lucked out finding Outdoor Norway- it was hassle free, transportation arranged for you, equipment could be rented if I needed. All great things!

But what makes Outdoor Norway stand out from all the rest is really Johannes. He’s fantastic! Super knowledgeable about the Norwegian outdoors, history and interesting tidbits about the mountain, hiking culture, stories about famous and not-so-famous hikers, as well as what’s going on today in terms of environmental threats, social and economic changes, and so on. You get backstories and learn about stuff you wouldn’t even know about if you didn’t have a guide. Aside from the educational part, he’s also great about having a sense of what his tour groups want to see and what they’re capable of – he led us up the mountain on the normal path hours before the crowds got there and down some unmapped, back country trails which was awesome- there would have been no offtrail exploring in the snow/ice/slush for me without him. Easily worth the price to see and experience the place in a way that doing it solo wouldn’t have allowed for.

Johannes is also friendly and chatty, interested in learning as much from his guests as we were in learning about him and the hike. He took a few great pictures of the hike, brought along some Norwegian “hiking chocolate” to share, and was a great guide to spend the day with.

Takk for turen, friend!

I’ve visited norway in late march-early april. My intention was visiting Pulpit Rock, but it was sheduled to start only 16 april. I was very dissapointed because of that, and than @Stavanger tourist information i was told that its possible to go with Outdoorlife Norway. We started early in the moorning, the weather was amazing, experienced guide, cool group. I enjoyed it very much, climbing the rocks is a little challange but it completly worth the result. Highly recomendable to go Pulpit Rock(Preikestolen) and Kjerag low season with Johannes or his collegue, price is reasonable and includes transport, ferry, hiking equipment and soup after your hike. Completly enjoyed it!

My dad and I did the hike with Johannes on the last day of March. The tour went smoothly, with plenty of stops to enjoy the beautiful views, ample time at the top and a hearty soup at the lodge after. Johannes made sure we were properly equipped with poles and crampons and at no point did we feel unsafe despite the changing weather. This was absolutely one of the highlights of our Scandinavian trip.

It was my first time to hike over boulders and rocky terrain. I was slow because I did not want to lose my footing. Johannes was extremely patient, and did not attempt to rush me. In addition, he took great pictures of the hike and the scenery to share with family and friends. His knowledge of the area, history and culture was an added bonus.

Also, I had inadvertently booked the wrong day, but Johannes was able to work around my travel schedule and arranged a different day. Having experience the Fjords, I feel I would have missed an experience of a lifetime. I have experienced heaven on Earth. It is a must see with a knowledgeable guide.

At the beginning, we didn’t know if we could do it by ourselves and finally, we decided to hike with you, and I’m glad to have this decision. We really enjoy hiking with our guides, Allan and Johannes. Awesome views, delicious soup and hot beverage and great company! I strongly recommend this experience. Hope see you next hike.

This was excellent experience from Erlund and Outdoorlife Norway.

It was not just an ordinary hike to Preikestolen, it was also a guide into the plants and trees that grow in the area.

Also there are few hidden paths that only the guide know that leads to good scenic spots to take pictures.

Not to mention, Erlund makes a good photographer, the pictures are amazing. This trip is highly recommended.

The hike was absolutely amazing for two reasons the guide who had knowledge of the area and the spectacular views.
It was just me on the trip but I got the best attention to detail.
I loved the entire experience
And would do it again
Outdoor life Norway is the best guided tour I have been to.
And I had my pictures taken and there was enough time for me to take as many pictures as I wanted and the next day I got the guides pictures that were of amazing quality
All in all best experience ever. Well worth it.

Easy pickup and ride to the start point. Hike was 2 hours each way and you don’t need to be super fit. We saw lots of other people on the way up but on the way down Johannes took us via unmarked trails. Very special. Superb value for money with a very friendly guide. We were lucky to have a clear day with 30km views.

We did the Pulpit Rock hike. I can honestly recommend this trip to anyone who wants to see the Pulpit Rock and something extra on the side.

Johannes was our guide and what a wonderful person he is. Humble en kind. He knows his fair share about Norway and the natureall. The stories he told us, while we stopped to catch our breath or watch the surroundings, were interesting and pleasant to listen to.

When we arrived at the rock we where the first visitors which made it even more spectaculair. He told us he always tries to get to the rock before other people. I my oppinion another thing why you should choose Outdoorlife Norway. They are willing to go that (special) extra mile.

The road back was very different from the road up. At other touroperators you dont get to see, what we saw. Thank you For that, guys!

Back at the bottom, delicious hot soup was served and we got the change to talk about the hike and our experiences with our fellow hikers.

Almost sad when the trip came to an end, we were taking back to our pick-up point with lots of great memories.

We will be back again for another hike!

We arranged the hike online which was very efficient. All the necessary information was available.

The pick up was well on time and we were greeted by our tour guide, Erlend, who made us feel comfortable and entertained despite being mixed with strangers within the hiking group. As most of the hikes, it was a tough one but we were provided with good equipment to ease the hike.

The hike up lasted for about 3 hours or so, including the several stops that we made. The view was so breathtaking and definitely one of the best I have seen! Erlend took several amazing photos that he emailed the day after.

Overall, I strongly recommend this hiking experience with ourdoor Norway. It was well organized and we had far better experience than following the trial by ourselves.

Me and my partner had an awesome day hiking up the Preikestolen!! we joined a group guided by Erlend, the friendliest guide ever!!! He knew loads about the area, from legends to names of birds, so it was wonderful to learn things as well as enjoy the stunning scenery 🙂We were so thankful to have arranged this day trip with outdoorlife as on the way up to Preikestolen we came across lots of ice and difficult terrain that for us, without the spikes, poles and knowledge that Erlend provided, would’ve been a bit of a struggle! The soup after the trekk was super yummy I must say 😛and last but not least, thanks so much for the amazing pictures throughout the hike!! Gracias por la experiencia!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anita P

I wasn’t sure about the possibilities of doing it on my own. Finally I made up my mind. And I’m so glad I joined the group…great company, awsome views, fabulous guides, delicious soup, and lovely pictures !! I really enjoyed this amazing hike. Thank you for everything

We were picked up from our hotel in the morning to start this amazing hike. I’m so glad I did it, it’s definitely worth doing, the scenery is breath taking, absolutely amazing. Our tour guides were Johannes and Allan, what an absolute pleasure meeting them. Allan is just a gem, he made the whole trek seem easy, we talked all the way! He is soo into nature and showed us so many things.. He is a very good guide.. Almost forgot, he is also an amazing photographer!!! The pictures were fab!!! I look well in them all. Thank you both so much for the experience we both appreciate it.

PS the soup after the hike was lovely.

Fatmeh M

I did this hike with Johannes and Adam in March 2016, it was truly exceptional.

As a pair they are both very knowledgeable of the area and are able to take you safely off the usual tracks which get flooded with other people enjoying the attraction.

When I did this tour it was the first time Adam and Johannes had has a completely full booking, i’m positive that that spell is over and they will be full for the future.

I had considered doing the trip alone but then once I realized how reasonable the cost was at 1090 KRO I found it was much more viable to do it as a tour.
Johannes provided us with snacks along the way and took us all for some freshly prepared soup at the lodge once we finished the hike.

I would strongly recommend this experience and would gladly do it again on my next visit to Norway.
This was a fantastic trip and I wish them all the best.

Robert, Manchester.

It was one of the best trip! And this trip had make me fall in love with the beauty of Norway! Johannes and Allan are the best tour you could ask very friendly and always telling stories about every single stops which makes the journey wonderful 😀I would certainly recommend if you love nature and wanted to try something fun in Norway

We took the trip with some friends during early spring. We were joined together with 3 other tourist and met our guide Erlend near the tourist information centre.
Travel time is 30mins drive to the port plus 40mins boat then another 30mins to the base camp.
Erlend provided some walking sticks and snow spikes for the shoes since it is still early spring and some ice are still expected on some paths.
The walk is about 3 hrs as we were moving slow due to the ice. There are some steep climb but will not be a problem for anyone.
The view from the top is breathtaking. Those who can date and are not afraid of height can sit on the ledge looking down to 604m drop. However, even slightly close the edge will be a good place to stand to get a photo of the fjords.
This trip is recommended for any planned visit to Stavanger!
I would like to return when I have time.
Kudos to Outdoorlife for this tour and to Erlend for being patient!

With very few companies offering a tour of Pulpit Rock earlier in the year, we considered hiring a car and making our way there ourselves. I am now so glad we did not. All the hassle was taken out of actually getting there by Johannes and Alan (the great tour guides who are both nice, funny and knowledgeable) and on the hike itself they get you there safely, taking some unusual routes off the beaten track the few others know about.

The views on this walk are spectacular and Google images doesn’t really do it justice – you have to see it for yourself. I would strongly advise people to take this tour earlier in the year as according to Johannes summer will be very busy.

All in all, I cannot speak highly enough of this small, but great little company. Johannes is just a great outdoors type of person who gets a real kick out of seeing others enjoying hiking – which I guarantee you will do!

James W

We did it in snow and foggy weather. Although it was no sight it was a great experience and we had a lot of fun. Thanks to our experienced and responsible guide Allan and a great hiking group from all over the world! Takk for turen! Kai

The most memorable hike ever! Johannes is a really passionate nature guide, along with his colleague Erlend. We were provided with shoe spikes and hiking pole for our safety. The view was so mesmerising and they also helped us to take some high quality photos which was sent via email. A highly recommended hike during spring! :))

Fly all the way from south east asia and have totally NO regret to have first experience of winter hike and glad to join OutdoorLife Norway with a team of good guides on winter hike to Preikestolen. A passion for nature, professionalism, safety come first are bringing hikers confidence, enjoy the hike journey and worth catching the amazing views on top. To wear ice spikes made the hike easy along some snowy and icing patches in the terrain, have free of charge fresh ice stick are really great experience for me who live in 365 summer days. It is highly recommend to everyone who has no worry and love to have some adventure hike experience.

We came to Norway to experience adventure and phenomenal views; and Johannes is the man to deliver exactly that. He has professionalism, yet is very charismatic and easy to talk to. He has in-depth knowledge of hiking all around Norway and abroad, and shared great insight into Norwegian culture and Preikestolen itself. We felt like the entire experience couldn’t have been more perfect, and this is due entirely to Johannes and his careful planning and ability to guide. It was an extraordinary way to spend our three year anniversary together and we highly recommend to everyone and will be sure to spread the good word to family and friends. Cheers, James and Maddie 🙂

Johannes is an excellent guide, he was born to be a guide, he is that good. He gets to know everyone in the group, remembers everyone’s name, provides interesting facts whenever we took breaks on the hike. Took just the right amount of breaks, not too many and at the most scenic spots. He brought extra boots and rain protection in case someone needed it (which they did). Going during the winter is amazing because of the juxtaposition of water, ice, and snow. We had the hike and the mountain to ourselves.

3 weeks before our visit to Stavanger we decided to book the winterhike to Preikestolen. The forecast back than was really cold winter weather and snow, so we were confident it would stay that way… Unfortunately the weather changed a week before we came and the snow melted away. Snowzilla fortunately saved some snow for Europe and the night before the hike the mountains were glazed by a white layer of snow!

We were picked up early in the morning in the centre of Stavanger and drove to Preikestolen where we started the winter hike. Johannes and his intern Erlend were great guides, knowleadgeable about the area and gave good tips on how to walk in this winter conditions with the equipment they provided us with. We were with a small group of my 2 friends and 3 others.

The winterhike to Preikestolen took us a total of 6 hours of which we spent around an hour on the top. Especially in winter I would recommend to book the trip with Outdoorlife Norway. They provide you with the right equipment, gave good advice on what to take with you from home and they know the dangerous bits of the hike, In summer there are hundreds of people doing the hike but in winter you are by yourself. It is safer to go with a guide who knows the area and conditions!

It was AWESOME! We were very lucky because the night before the hike it had snowed a lot. It was an amazing experience to be the first (and almost only one) who walked there that day. I went together with 2 friends and 3 others joined as well. It was a nice group and both Johannes and Erlend were great guides. We spent almost an hour on the top, enjoying the view and making many pictures. The hike was a nice challenge. In Holland we’re not really used to walk in the mountains and snow but I really loved it! It was great that we got spikes for our shoes which made walking a lot easier.

This company provides the best hiking tours I have ever been on. Johannes is extremely experienced, and I felt comfortable being guided by him the whole time. He provided reliable, clean and well kept equipment to assist with the hike. He did very well to keep all of us at the same pace, and we had an amazing experience.

I did the Kjerag hike and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Definitely do it with Johannes!

It was such an incredible experience hiking to Preikestolen in the winter. We had perfect weather and were virtually alone – it was only our group up on the rock for the whole time we were there! The views were incredible the whole way up – it felt unreal. I was told that I needed to come up with new a new phrase as I was constantly saying, “wow” and “amazing”.

Johannes was an amazing guide and the gear and service he provided was top notch. Would love to do this again!
