Weather Changes

Due to the possibility of rapidly-changing weather conditions, it may be necessary to make changes to scheduled trips. In the event that your trip needs to be rescheduled for another day or cancelled on short notice, you may choose between joining the rescheduled trip or getting a refund. In the event that weather conditions deteriorate during your trip, it may be necessary to turn around on the trail or head back earlier than planned. If this happens, no refunds will be given.

NOTE: We cannot guarantee that the sunset will be visible during all hikes.
As with all outdoor activities, weather is not something humans can control. Based on our experiences with past guests, we don’t cancel our tours in advance because of grey skies, light rain, or fog. Guests have a wide range of expectations, but it is our experience that most would rather go through with their hike, regardless of the weather conditions. Hiking under blue skies is nice, but there is also beauty in hiking through clouds, fog, and light rain. Some of the most spectacular sunsets have resulted from such conditions  =)

Join us on an exciting tour that combines Rødne’s 2-hour fjord cruise and Outdoorlife Norway’s Preikestolen Winter/Spring Hike. Cruise through the Lysefjord by catamaran and experience Norway’s ‘Fjord of Lights’ as it begins its yearly transformation into a green oasis. Peer up at Preikestolen, which clings to the mountainside 604 meters overhead. Enjoy a winter/spring hike to the cliffside on trails that have been upgraded by Nepalese Sherpas. Take in the stillness of being one of the few to stand atop Preikestolen during the off-season and enjoy some of the most spectacular views in all of Norway.

Your adventure begins midday in Stavanger with a 2-hour cruise into the Lysefjord. After departing the harbor, you’ll be able to view Stavanger from a different perspective and get an overview of the surrounding fjords, islands, and mountains. Having left the city behind, you’ll glide through the Høgsfjord, and then cruise under a suspension bridge that’s located above the inlet to the Lysefjord. Here, steep mountain walls towering hundreds of meters above the fjord emerge.

From sea-level, you’ll be able to feast your eyes on majestic Preikestolen, which appears to reach into the sky above the Lysefjord. While the cruise navigates back out of the fjord, you’ll visit Vagabond’s cove, where Rødne will share the legend of this mysterious natural landmark. The captain will also carefully steer the boat’s bow up to the Hengjane waterfall, where you’ll have the opportunity to sample its delicious crystal-clear water. During the cruise, you’ll have the opportunity to choose between enjoying the striking scenery from the comfort of the boat’s sheltered cabin or venturing out onto the spacious sundeck.

The second portion of your adventure begins back at the mouth of the Lysefjord where you’ll be met by your Outdoorlife Norway hiking guide, who will transport you onward to the Preikestolen trailhead. After a short information and safety briefing, you’ll start the hike to Preikestolen. Your guide will lead you up through marshlands, forests and onward to the mountain’s plateau. This early in the year, weather conditions are constantly changing and the trail is often covered with snow and ice, often well into springtime. As needed, you’ll adjust your equipment (ice spikes, etc.) to match the changes in terrain.

Along the way, there will be opportunities to catch your breath, enjoy a warm beverage, and snap photos of the spectacular nature around you. After 2.5-3.5 hours of trekking, while standing atop mighty Preikestolen, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of the Lysefjord and its surrounding mountains and valleys. The exhilaration of standing atop the 604-meter-high cliff is nothing short of awe-inspiring. You’ll be able to feel content in knowing that you’re one of the few that have experienced Preikestolen during the off-season. After a well-deserved break at the cliff’s edge, your guide will lead you back down to the trailhead*, which will take about 2 hours.

On your way down to the trailhead, you’ll be facing Stavanger and the north sea. You’ll be able to watch as the sun sets over the horizon, sometimes illuminating the sky with vivid colors. When darkness falls, your guide will provide you with a headlamp to ensure that you’re able to safely hike the last stretch of the trail. During the drive back to Stavanger, your guide will take an alternative route, which includes the world´s longest undersea road tunnel.  At the end of the day, you’ll arrive back in Stavanger full of unique memories that will surely last a lifetime.

*Near the trailhead you’ll see Preikestolen Mountain Lodge. We strongly recommend this modern yet cozy lodge as a place to overnight after your hike.

Unbelievably amazing!

The guided walk up let’s you go at your own pace with plenty of opportunities for breaks and snaps. Hilda was very knowledgable and brought her Alaskan husky for the walk too which made the walk even more fun and adventurous! Tricky walk in patches with the ice, but mostly fine. Views from Preikestolen are incredible, we’ll never forget the experience which has to go down as one of the greatest walks you’ll ever do. Tak fur turen!

Unforgettable

Our cruise and hike package to Preikestolen was absolutely fantastic. The two guides and Molli the husky were knowledgeable and friendly – I knew I was in safe hands – and as someone travelling by myself it was ideal. The cruise part was good, but the real adventure was in the hike which takes about 8 hours all together. There didn’t seem to be many companies offering the trip at this time of year but it won’t be just the end view that you remember – the entire trip was excellent and very well organised. Here’s to Kjerag next time I visit!

Preikestolen hike

I took part in the Preikestolen hike and fjord cruise in early February.
The fjord cruise was great despite not being able to go our original route due to ice blocking the fjord. This didn’t cut the trip short at all and we still were out on the water for all the time we were meant to be.
I was the only person on the cruise to take part in the hike to Preikestolen, and I really think everyone else missed out.
My guide, Erlend, was very friendly and knowledgable about the local area and told me lots cool things before we even got to the hike.
I’d arranged to hire boots from Outdoorlife Norway. This was easy to do and Erlend had them waiting for me. They fit well and were comfortable for the duration of the hike.
As we were the only two people hiking in our group it was easy to stop and take pictures whenever, but Erlend was so accommodating I don’t think this would be an issue in a larger group. As a keen, (and good), photographer he was also happy to stop and take pictures along the route, which I appreciated.
We didn’t meet many hikers on our route and had the rock to ourselves when we arrived at the top, which was excellent.
I’d recommend this tour to anyone. Erlend was an excellent guide and we even went off route on our return leg to see views from some extra vantage points. Plus he went out of his way to save me waiting for a later ferry by running back to the hike start and collecting the car to pick me up en route for returning to Stavanger.
Altogether a highly enjoyable experience and a highlight of my time in Norway.

Brilliant foggy hike to ourselves

Had a fantastic time hiking up to Preikestolen, and would definitely love to go back again in clearer weather! Our guide Hilda met us from the boat, and drove us to the start of the trek. She was friendly and chatty, and knowledgeable about the area. The hike itself wasn’t too tiring, and the fog gave it a mysterious edge. We had Preikestolen to ourselves when we were up there, which was an added bonus. Hiking back in the dark was a great experience too!
