PRICE: 1,490 NOK per person

Join Outdoorlife Norway on a day-trip to Flørli, which boasts the world’s longest wooden staircase. Cruise through the Lysefjord and view Preikestolen from sea-level. Take the long climb up 4,444 steps to the top of the mountainside, enjoy the fjord views and visit the former power plant village of Flørli.

Your day will begin when our guide meets you in Stavanger. After being transported to the shores of the Høgsfjord, you’ll board a passenger ferry that will cruise into the Lysefjord, where steep mountain walls towering hundreds of meters above the fjord emerge. During the cruise, you’ll pass waterfalls, abandoned farms, and the famous Preikestolen cliff before arriving at Flørli. Once at Flørli, your guide will lead you up the 4,444 wooden steps that parallel old water pipes which, at first glance, seem to be precariously clinging to the mountainside.

This is a demanding 4-hour, ~6 km (round-trip) hike with a total ascent of just over 750 meters.

Take the long climb up 4,444 steps to the top of the mountainside, enjoy the fjord views and visit the former power plant village of Flørli.

Flørli, which has been inhabited on and off since at least the seventeenth century, is beautifully located amidst 1000-meter-high mountains along the southern shore of the Lysefjord.  In 1916, construction began on a hydro-electric power plant, which, from 1918 until 1950, supplied electricity to the city of Stavanger. At its peak (1917), 142 people were employed at the plant; quite an impressive number considering that only 13 permanent residences were ever built near the site.

Your journey to Flørli begins when your guide picks you up in Stavanger city-center (see above for specific pick-up times and locations). While being transported to the fjord, which takes about 1 hour, you’ll be able to catch glimpses of Norway’s stunning landscapes. Upon arrival at the shore of the Høgsfjord, you’ll board a passenger ferry, which will transport you to Flørli.

During the 1 hour, 45 min. fjord crossing to Flørli, the ferry will start-off by navigating under a suspension bridge that spans the mouth of the Lysefjord. Steep mountain walls towering hundreds of meters above the fjord will then emerge. The cruise will transport you further into the Lysefjord and where you will pass waterfalls, abandoned farms, and the famous Preikestolen cliff, which towers 604 meters above sea-level.

Once you’ve reached the mountaintop, your guide will lead you along a trail through the forest and on to the remains of the Flørli village.

This is a demanding 4-hour, ~6 km (round-trip) hike with a total ascent of just over 750 meters. Following the hike back down to sea-level, you will visit the Flørli 4,444 Power Café, which is located inside the historic hydro-power hall built in 1916. If time allows, you will have the opportunity to visit the exhibition in the control room, and learn more about Flørli’s unique history.

Florli Stairway Dayhike & Lysefjord Cruise was the second hike of two days hiking with Outdoorlife Norway. I had little knowledge of the Florli Stairway and went into it with no expectation. The Lysefjord Cruise was very lovely. I found the beginning of the hike, ascending 4,444 steps, to be very demanding and challenging and wanted to quit after the first 50 steps (sorry I’m not going to sugar coat the experience). I’m really happy I stuck with it as the surprises along the hike suppressed the challenge. Words or photographs cannot begin to describe the remnant beauty of Florli or the spectacular views of the Lysefjord – you will need to experience it! You will leave Flori with a wonderful feeling of accomplishment. This hike is the first thing I tell my friends & family of my entire visit to Norway. I highly encourage everyone to experience the Florli Stairway Dayhike & Lysefjord Cruise!!!

This hike was not easy – but not impossible 🙂 Just get a good pace in steps and breathing and you’ll be rewarded with an incredible feeling of accomplishment and then at the top you’ll get the most gorgeous views! Johannes gives you personalized history of the the area and that’s something you can’t get just trying to go up by yourself and then the hike back down through a trail goes over a beautiful stream and you just feel and absorb the forest and water and it’s just plain gorgeous up there. Florli is super cute and the boat ride out there was cool as well to see Preikestolen from the water after having already climbed up to it the day before! 😀
