Lysefjord Bike & Hike

Price: 13,990 NOK per person

Do you love both cycling and hiking? Would you like to combine the two into one unforgettable adventure?

The Lysefjord, or the fjord of lights, is one of Ryfylke’s most magnificent destinations. The 42-kilometer-long fjord was formed nearly 10,000 years ago when the last ice age ended. As one of Norway’s most photographed areas, the Lysefjord offers visitors spectacular views around every bend. It’s also home to Preikestolen, the world-famous rock cliff that hangs 604 meters above sea level.

Join Outdoorlife Norway on a 5-day trip and explore a large area of the Lysefjord in a relatively short amount of time. Enjoy a unique adventure that combines bicycling along winding roads with hiking through Norway’s wilderness. Cycle along low-traffic roads that wind around the fjords’ shorelines. Hike to some of Norway’s most iconic landmarks and experience stunning views that only Fjord Norway can offer. Visit world-renowned Preikestolen, as well as Flørli, the world’s longest wooden staircase (4,444 steps!).

This is a very demanding 5-day hiking and cycling trip that requires that guests have both physical and mental endurance.

The trip includes:

  • 16 kilometers of hiking spread over 2 days
    (10km + 6km)
    Ascent of 1,500 meters (750m + 750m)
  • 90 kilometers of biking spread over 3 days
    (10km + 30km + 50km)
    Ascent of 1,650 meters (350m + 350m + 950m)
More difficult: Suitable for adults (at least 16 yrs.) in very good condition, with previous experience with hiking and biking.

Ever biked & hiked along a fjord?

Join Outdoorlife Norway on a 5-day trip and explore a large area of the Lysefjord in a relatively short amount of time. Enjoy a unique adventure that combines bicycling along winding roads with hiking through Norway’s wilderness. Spend 3 days biking on low-traffic roads that wind around the fjords’ shorelines. Take (2) day-hikes to/through some of Norway’s most iconic landmarks and experience stunning views that only Fjord Norway can offer. Visit world-renowned Preikestolen as well as Flørli, the world’s longest wooden staircase (4,444 steps!).

Day 1 – Friday – Biking
Distance – 10 kilometers; Ascent – 350 meters

After meeting your professional guide in Stavanger City Center (Domkirkeplassen), your trip will begin with a briefing, at which time you will also be allocated a bike & helmet. Your guide will lead you on-foot/bike to the ferry terminal where you will depart (15:30 (3:30pm)) on a 30-minute ferry-ride through the outermost branches of the areas’ fjords. Onboard, you can enjoy views of Stavanger’s skyline and the Ryfylke mountains, which loom on the horizon. Once ashore, your guide will lead you on a bike ride to Preikestolen Mountain Lodge (also the trail-head to Preikestolen), which will be your base for the next 2 nights (shared 2, 3, or 4-person rooms). After checking in, you’ll enjoy dinner while overlooking the beautiful Refsvatn Lake, followed by a good night’s sleep.

Day 2 – Saturday – Hiking
Distance – 10 kilometers; Ascent – 750 meters

After breakfast, your first day of hiking begins by leisurely canoeing across Refsvatn Lake, which takes about 30 minutes. Once back ashore, your guide will lead you away from the tourist crowds that are making their way up the main trail to Preikestolen. You’ll hike ‘off-the-beaten-track’ along the majestic Lysefjord until you reach the famous Preikestolen cliffside, which hangs 604 meters above the fjord. Throughout the hike, you’ll enjoy scenery and viewpoints that only few have seen. After a lunch break on the mountain plateau, you’ll hike back down to Preikestolen Mountain Lodge, where you’ll again enjoy dinner with a view.

Day 3 – Sunday – Biking
Distance – 30 kilometers; Ascent – 350 meters

Once your bags are packed, they will be transported to Flørli, where you will spend the next two nights. On bicycles once again, you’ll cycle along a series of fjords and bays, a route that will ultimately lead you to the mouth of the Lysefjord. Here, you will board a ferry that will transport you to Flørli. During the 45-minute cruise through the fjord you’ll have the chance to view majestic Preikestolen from sea-level. Flørli is beautifully located amidst 1000-meter-high mountains along the southern shore of the Lysefjord. Once on-site, you’ll dine in Flørli’s former hydro power-plant, which is now part restaurant, part museum.  Accommodations at Flørli consist of shared apartments (2-4 people per room; 8 people per apartment) with great views of the Lysefjord. Before turning in for the night, you will get the opportunity to soothe your tired muscles in a fjord-side, Norwegian-style Jacuzzi =)

Day 4 – Monday – Hiking
Distance – 6 kilometers; Ascent – 750 meters

After breakfast, your guide will lead you up 4,444 wooden steps that, at first glance, seem to be precariously clinging to the mountainside. The steps run parallel to old water pipes that once helped transform the natural forces of a river into hydro-power. On your way up the staircase, you’ll enjoy jaw-dropping views of the Lysefjord and surrounding mountains. After conquering Flørli’s steps, which make up the world’s longest wooden staircase, you’ll have ascended 750 meters above the fjord below. Now mountaintop, your guide will lead you along a trail through the forest and then back down to Flørli. You’ll once again enjoy a dinner inside the power-plant followed by a good night’s rest in your fjord-view apartment.

Day 5 – Tuesday – Biking
Distance – 50 kilometers; Ascent – 950 meters

On Tuesday you’ll begin your day by taking the ferry back across the Lysefjord to the start of your trip’s greatest challange: biking 50 kilometers over a mountain pass. Your efforts will be handsomely rewarded with spectacular scenery along the way which, among other things, includes fjords and valley lakes. To top it off, you’ll conclude your long day of biking with a beer-tasting at the finish line. Your trip will conclude with a 40-minute ferry ride back to Stavanger.

The tour ends (on Tuesday) in Stavanger at approximately 15:30 (3:30pm).
