Månafossen Waterfall Half-Day Hike

5 out of 5 based on 8 customer ratings
(8 customer reviews)

Price: 4,990 NOK
Group price for a private guided tour (1-7 guests)

Join us for a relatively easy hike to the highest waterfall in south-western Norway. Månafossen waterfall, which is fed by the Mån river, plunges 92 meters into the canyon below. The force of the waterfall, which is flanked by steep granite walls, produces a dazzling display of mist and rainbows.

Månafossen remains relatively unknown and is inaccessible by public transportation. The waterfall is visited primarily by locals, making it a true hidden gem for tourists.

Duration: 5 hours. The hike itself takes approximately 3 hours: 1.5 hours (ascent) + 1 hour (descent) + breaks.

During the hour-long drive to the base of the hiking trail, you’ll pass through a variety of stunning landscapes: pastures and meadows, green valleys, fjords, and mountains.

Season: April – October

Difficulty: Easy. Suitable for people of most ages – excluding children younger than 6 years and seniors – who are in general good condition, with some (basic) hiking experience.

Your professional guide will meet you in Stavanger (Please select a meeting-point and -time when booking).  During the hour-long drive to the base of the hiking trail, you’ll pass through a variety of landscapes: pastures and meadows, green valleys, fjords, and mountains.

The first leg of the hike, up to the waterfall, takes approximately 45 minutes (one-way), and is steep at times. Stairs made of wood and locally-sourced stone pave the way, helping to make the hike less difficult. The guide will take it slow up the trail and then allow you to catch your breath at the viewpoint, taking time to enjoy the beauty of Månefossen. After a short break (instead of heading back down the trail as most others do) you’ll continue hiking further upstream to visit the green valley of Fidjadal. This leg of the hike takes approximately 45 minutes (one-way). There, you’ll stop at the mountain farm of Mån, which was inhabited until 1915. It’s a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee while taking in the serenity of the Norwegian wilderness, before retracing your steps back down into civilization.

The tour ends in Stavanger

Nature talking to you in a beautiful waterfall. Johannes gives all the insights with his excellent guide.

    :

We had an excellent time and it was easily the best day spent of our time in Norway. Already the drive to the starting point offered lots of beautiful vistas and the hike through a diverse and beautiful landscape was demanding at times, but manageable. Our guide Johannes was very friendly and entertaining and prepared for all occasions.

I had a really good time during this hike. The drive to the waterfall is already very nice. The waterfall is beautiful. I liked that the hiked continued to the farm and see a different landscape. Johannes knows a lot about the environment and tells about it with lots of enthusiasm.

    (verified hiker):

We spend a wonderful half-day with Johannes from the moment he picked-up us until the moment he left us at the meeting point. The drive to the starting point of the hike offers beautiful landscapes. The hike is sometimes demanding but at the end you can relax and have a nice time at the Mån farm. From my experience is good to have warm clothes with you and gloves to help you with the chains.

    :

I think it was a great idea to book this tour. The hike is quite easy but always interesting. The waterfall was very beautiful and one of the biggest I have seen in Norway. I also liked that we have gone to the Mån farm, too. Johannes did a great job and was always able to answer our questions about nature, Norway and …
Thank you for a nice trip.

  6. 5 out of 5

    (verified hiker):

The hike was gorgeous and I was pretty much mesmerized by the waterfall. It was great to also see the source of the waterfall and learn about the history of the farming area and hiking cabins. Great, easy, but rewarding jaunt! Way better than trying to go up alone without someone explaining the history and environment. Loved it.

My 7 year old son and I had a great time on this hike! Johannes was patient and helpful. He was very responsive to my emails when I had questions. I felt confident in his skills and knowledge of the terrain. It was a beautiful hike up the mountain. I would highly recommend this day trip.

It wasn’t only the hike and beautiful view I enjoyed, it was the gentlemen from outdoor life Norway who accompanied me and letting me know about the history of places around. Nice trip along with nice chat 🙂
