Are you looking for a more exclusive outdoor adventure? Would you prefer to experience Norway’s splendid nature while avoiding the crowds? Join Outdoorlife Norway and Fjord Events on a unique Lysefjord adventure: hike ‘off the beaten track’ to Preikestolen then take part in an adventurous RIB safari on the Lysefjord.
On an annual basis, Preikestolen and the Lysefjord welcome approximately 700,000 visitors. Expecting more than 300,000 visitors in 2017, Preikestolen has the honor of being the most popular trekking-destination in Norway. The Lysefjord, with its abundance of outdoor activities, also attracts approximately 300,000 visitors to its shores annually.
Your professional guide will meet you in Stavanger early morning and, after a quick briefing, lead you on-foot to the ferry terminal where you’ll depart on a 30-minute ferry-ride through the outermost branches of the areas’ fjords. On-board, you can enjoy views of Stavanger’s skyline and the Ryfylke mountains, which loom on the horizon.
After making your way to the trailhead, your group will embark on a ‘off the beaten track’ hike to Preikestolen. During 70% of the hike, you’ll follow off-the-map trails which are overgrown and have (almost) been forgotten. These trails are rarely used and the cairns that lead the way through dense forests are difficult to find. Once above the tree-line, the trail completely disappears: the remaining 30% of the hike is thus comprised of off-trail hiking & scrambling. Along the way, you’ll come across a wide variety of flora and, if you’re lucky, also catch glimpses of the area’s beautiful wildlife (including owls, ravens, roe deer, and eagles).
During this portion of the hike, you’ll experience out-of-this-world and rarely-seen views of the Lysefjord. After about 3,5 hours on foot, you’ll reach the famous viewpoint of Preikestolen that most others only get to see in tourist brochures. Your group will then stop for a well-deserved lunch break atop the mountain’s famous plateau, towering 604 meters above sea level. There, you’ll get to view the 42-kilometer-long Lysefjord and its 1000-meter-high mountain walls from a new perspective. After lunch, as you hike down the fjord’s inner hillsides, you’ll follow a different route along forest creeks and through ancient pine forests until you reach sea-level.
RIB (rigid-inflatable boat) Safari
Once at sea-level, you’ll embark on a 1-hour RIB Safari that will surely get your adrenaline pumping. As you speed through the water, you’ll enjoy the Lysefjord’s beautiful and varied landscapes from a new perspective. Some of the things you’ll see include mountains, waterfalls and, if weather permits, Preikestolen from below. You’ll also visit a variety of interesting landmarks including Whiskey Falls, Vegabond Cave, and the Hengjane waterfall, which, according to Norse mythology, supplies the ”water of wisdom”. There, you’ll have an opportunity to follow in the vikings’ footsteps and drink naturally purified water straight from its source. After all the excitement, you’ll have a chance to wind down while being transported by boat back to Stavanger’s city-center. You’ll have time to relax while traveling through the fjords and archipelago of islands that surround Stavanger.
The trip ends in Stavanger at approximately 18:00 (6:00pm).
