Have you ever been hiking through snow and ice? Just a stone’s throw outside of Stavanger, the region’s majestic mountains rise hundreds of meters straight out of the sea. During much of the winter, the mountaintops are blanketed in thick layers of snow and the trail to Preikestolen is almost deserted in comparison with other times the of year. Those who venture up the trail experience the peace and solitude that comes with the stillness of wintertime. Join us on a hike to Preikestolen and experience the spectacular Lysefjord during Norway’s long dark winter!

Because of the presence of snow and ice, hiking to Preikestolen without a guide during the wintertime is not recommended. Our professional guides are trained to safely maneuver through the frozen landscape as well as winter’s rapidly changing weather conditions. They carry with them all necessary navigation, safety, first-aid, and outdoor winter equipment.

After a short briefing at the trail-head, your guide will lead you up through the shifting terrain and onward to the mountain’s plateau. Along the way, the guide will navigate to the best vantage points, where you’ll be able to snap photos of the spectacular nature around you. You’ll also have the opportunity to catch your breath and enjoy a warm beverage along the way. After 2.5-3.5 hours of trekking, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of some of the most dramatic scenery Fjord-Norway has to offer.

My trip to Preikestolen with OutdoorLifeNorway was amazing! I am a 23 yr old traveller from Australia and I was dying to visit Pulpit Rock, but only travelling through norway in march and was worried about conditions. Johanne’s winter hike option was perfect for me. The hike was truly beautiful, with lots of natural wonders to observe. The guide was very accommodating, informative yet casual, and lots of fun! Wearing ice spikes made the hike easy along some snowy patches in the terrain. Finally, the view at the top was nothing short of spectacular and well worth the effort to climb the trail. Thanks Johanne for a really great experience! I would recommend this trip to anyone who likes to experience the great outdoors in non-peak season!

This trip to the Prekestolen was amazing!

Such beautiful landscapes with Johanne, a very good guide, careful in all points.

I had a day that I will never forgot! So, I hardly recommend to do this Preikestolen winter hike for everyone who wants to see the beauty of nature!!

It was such an incredible experience hiking to Preikestolen in the winter. We had perfect weather and were virtually alone – it was only our group up on the rock for the whole time we were there! The views were incredible the whole way up – it felt unreal. I was told that I needed to come up with new a new phrase as I was constantly saying, “wow” and “amazing”.

Johannes was an amazing guide and the gear and service he provided was top notch. Would love to do this again!

Wow! It was a fantastic turen to Preikestolen by a winter hike! Johannes was a really gentleman who can lead you very safely to the stunning viewpoint at the top of Prejkestolen. Very many thanks for him to take a lot of pictures and having an interesting talk during the hiking. To some of you hesitating to climb up the mountain, I say just GO! The breathtaking view at the top and you will be there alone in the winter season. I really recommend this winter hiking!

What a pleasure it was to join Johannes and Erlend on this winter hike to Pulpit Rock – they are both great company and knowledgeable about the area. In addition Erlend is a talented photographer and captured some great shots of our group. The hike itself is not particularly strenuous and is suitable for a group of mixed abilities – there’s some great scenery along the way and the view from the top is stunning. It’s well worth another 10 minute climb to the lookout point above pulpit rock which gives you a different perspective. For me this is the best time of year to go as we had the mountain to ourselves (I’m told it can get crowded in the summer). We were blessed by crisp hiking weather – little wind and the forecast rain, when it arrived, was patchy and light. Once we arrived back at the Mountain Lodge, we strolled down to the lake where the combination of mountain backdrop reflected in the frozen water is really atmospheric. I’d recommend this day trip to anyone and hope to go back in the not-too-distant future for the 3 day hike to Kjerag

  7. Rated 5 out of 5

It was AWESOME! We were very lucky because the night before the hike it had snowed a lot. It was an amazing experience to be the first (and almost only one) who walked there that day. I went together with 2 friends and 3 others joined as well. It was a nice group and both Johannes and Erlend were great guides. We spent almost an hour on the top, enjoying the view and making many pictures. The hike was a nice challenge. In Holland we’re not really used to walk in the mountains and snow but I really loved it! It was great that we got spikes for our shoes which made walking a lot easier.

Johaness is simply a wonderful and entertaining guide. Extremely professional from start to finish. All the equipment was brilliant, went at a pace that suited everyone in the group. Very knowledgeable and made it an unforgettable experience. I hope to return again some day for more experiences.

3 weeks before our visit to Stavanger we decided to book the winterhike to Preikestolen. The forecast back than was really cold winter weather and snow, so we were confident it would stay that way… Unfortunately the weather changed a week before we came and the snow melted away. Snowzilla fortunately saved some snow for Europe and the night before the hike the mountains were glazed by a white layer of snow!

We were picked up early in the morning in the centre of Stavanger and drove to Preikestolen where we started the winter hike. Johannes and his intern Erlend were great guides, knowleadgeable about the area and gave good tips on how to walk in this winter conditions with the equipment they provided us with. We were with a small group of my 2 friends and 3 others.

The winterhike to Preikestolen took us a total of 6 hours of which we spent around an hour on the top. Especially in winter I would recommend to book the trip with Outdoorlife Norway. They provide you with the right equipment, gave good advice on what to take with you from home and they know the dangerous bits of the hike, In summer there are hundreds of people doing the hike but in winter you are by yourself. It is safer to go with a guide who knows the area and conditions!

Johannes is an excellent guide, he was born to be a guide, he is that good. He gets to know everyone in the group, remembers everyone’s name, provides interesting facts whenever we took breaks on the hike. Took just the right amount of breaks, not too many and at the most scenic spots. He brought extra boots and rain protection in case someone needed it (which they did). Going during the winter is amazing because of the juxtaposition of water, ice, and snow. We had the hike and the mountain to ourselves.

We came to Norway to experience adventure and phenomenal views; and Johannes is the man to deliver exactly that. He has professionalism, yet is very charismatic and easy to talk to. He has in-depth knowledge of hiking all around Norway and abroad, and shared great insight into Norwegian culture and Preikestolen itself. We felt like the entire experience couldn’t have been more perfect, and this is due entirely to Johannes and his careful planning and ability to guide. It was an extraordinary way to spend our three year anniversary together and we highly recommend to everyone and will be sure to spread the good word to family and friends. Cheers, James and Maddie

No regret to have first experience of winter hike and glad to join OutdoorLife Norway with a team of good guides on winter hike to Preikestolen. A passion for nature, professionalism, safety come first are bringing hikers confidence, enjoy the hike journey and worth catching the amazing views on top. To wear ice spikes made the hike easy along some snowy and icing patches in the terrain, have free of charge fresh ice stick are really great experience for me who live in 365 summer days. It is highly recommend to everyone who has no worry and love to have some adventure hike experience.

Amazing view with professional & friendly guides. Hand poles are really helpful during the winter hike. I also rent a good quality jacket which keeps me warm. We are lucky enough to catch a good weather, and Johannes brings a bottle of hot blueberry juice when we arrive the Preikesolen, the juice rocks the day! I will strongly recommend this winter hike, as there won’t be a lot people , so it would be really relaxing time after reaching the the Preikeston.

It was amazing ! I did hesitate to do the winter hike because of the price but it is really worth it. The guide is really nice, careful and friendly ! I could not have done this without him. We need equipment and advice to keep safe. And he taught us a lot of interesting stuffs about the nature, Norway, hiking, Preikestolen etc… It was fun and we had such an amazing view! I am 21 years old, and I am not super sporty so it is a moderate difficulty.
    I recommend it !!:)

After very early start – 7am – Johannes and Alan guided us through a fantastic climb to the top of Pulpit Rock. The initial climb is a little difficult but once acclimatised it was brilliant. The views are spectacular all the way and the climb is exhilerating. Johannes and Alan pay attention to detail – as in the care and knowledge of their group. They have a brilliant sense of humour and make the whole day a great experience and one we shall never forget. Also thanks for the Locally produced Blackberry juice at the top of the climb. Much appreciated. Would recommend this trip to people who enjoy being outdoors and aren’t afraid of heights. Thank you Johannes and Alan we thoroughly enjoyed our time with you and what a brilliant start to our holiday.

High safety level provided by equipment and trusted guides, very kind and helpful staff, perfect communication before the trip as well as during the hike. I was together with my mum who is 50 years old, so the age range is pretty wide. I will definitely contact these people again, if I plan a longer trip in the mountains.

We did a Winterhike with Johannes and Alan. We had perfect weather: snowy scenery and clear blue sky. Johannes and Alan were great guides and pay a lot of attention to the group which only 5 people. The hike was absolutely stunning and would definitely recommend it.
If the weather is fine and there is no snow and ice, you could easily do the hike yourself but we were happy we did the hike with Outdoor Norway trips.

This hike was the highlight of our trip to Stavanger and it was one of the most beautiful hikes we have ever done. The scenery in the snow was breathtaking and we felt lucky in that we had the whole rock to ourselves. Johannes was friendly, down to earth, and prepared us well for the hike. I cannot recommend this hike enough, it was truly unforgettable.

I couldn’t recommend this any more! We decided to do a hike in March, which is in winter season, when all the hiking trails were closed. Luckily we came across Outdoorlife Norway which was the only company willing to do specific hikes during the winter. Johannes (our tour guide) picked us up on time and provided us with walking sticks, snow spikes for our boots, and a hot drink at the top of pulpit rock. He gave us lots of interesting facts about the trail whilst going up pulpit rock. He also took photos of us throughout the hike and on the top of pulpit rock, and sent us a link with the photos the following day. If you’re thinking of doing the pulpit rock tour during winter season, Johannes is your man!

Really enjoyed the hike up to Preikestulen! Definitely recommend the tour, the group was really small and Johannes was a super nice guide. We went in January so luckily there weren’t many people round this time of the year. All in all the trip wasn’t too difficult (4 hours in total), but make sure to bring proper clothes & shoes

Loved our winter hike to preikestolen! Our guide Oula (probably spelled that wrong) and his adorable dog Kenai (probably spelled that one wrong too) we’re knowledgeable and fun for the trip. We didn’t have a car so it was nice being picked up and dropped off at our hotel and not have to worry about transportation, especially since cabs are…

My friend and I were in Stavanger for 3 days and booked two trips with Johannes – Preikestolen Winter Hike & Winter Snowshoe Hike. Both trips with Johannes were with very small groups (just my friend and I in fact!) which made the experience very personal and memorable. As promised, there were snacks (nuts) and a hot drink (black currant juice) at the top. We came during the off season, so the conditions for the snowshoe hike weren’t great (icy wind) but Johannes reminded us that the goal was get closer to nature – sometimes that’s not comfortable. I would book again with Outdoorlife Norway in a heartbeat, I don’t think there’s any other way to safely explore nature in Norway!

I came all the way from Australia for this. If you have a chance to go and do it with outdoor life! My Guide Allan(sorry I forgot the Norge spelling) was fantastic. I was the only one on the hike (which I’m sure they lost money on) but it was no problem. He was funny and very professional. you definitely need a guide. I personally saw one person who had an accident and others wandering off in the wrong direction only to be pulled up by Allen out of concern for their welfare. The hike was amazing and fun and the pay off was the best. We had the rock to our selves! Go in winter and enjoy the ice and snow as well as the lack of crowd. Two days latter I’m still buzzing about one the best experiences of my life. Thank You out door life!!!! I wish I could give more than 5 star review!

We did the Preikestolen Winter Hike and loved the experience. Johannes, our guide and the owner of the business, was amazing and you could see his passion and love for what he does. He was very patient with everyone in our group, and lots of information about the area to share. While locals might be fine to do the hike by themselves in winter, but for visitors I would recommend the guided hike due to not knowing the track, the conditions, and just the general experience of having someone help you out and keep you informed. We definitely needed the spikes to go over our shoes (the spikes were provided with the tour) to help us get over the ice.
The hike itself wasn’t as strenuous as I’d expected, more just the difficultly of walking across the ice. Anyone who is younger will manage fine, people over 50 or 60 who walk alot and are in decent physical shape will also find it manageable, but maybe more challenging. If you have bad knees, tape them up or get a brace prior to the hike, or have a good management plan afterwards (advice from a physio).
The view from the top certainly makes it worth it.

We were staying in Stavanger for a conference and I found this awesome hike for my husband to go on while I was at the conference. This company was awesome. They picked him up from the hotel and had a small group (8 people) they took on the hike. He had a great time and said the guide was really helpful. They provide the necessary winter equipment and even take photos for you. Views were amazing! Not crowded like it can be in summer. Highly recommend this company and this trip!

We were provided with ice spikes en picks for the icy parts of te hike, also warm bevearages and a snack. We were in a group of five and had a lot of fun together. I highly recommend this winter hike for everyone going to Norway, espcecially because you avoid the masses of tourist you would meet in the summer
