Tour Description

Witness the Lysefjord’s bright green -and sometimes snowy- wilderness as it awakens after the long, cold winter. Breathe in the crisp, cool mountain air and experience the silence of hiking in small groups while enjoying panoramic views of some of the most dramatic scenery Fjord Norway has to offer.

Tour Itinerary
Your journey to Kjerag begins in the early-morning hours when your professional guide meets you at the pick-up location you chose during the booking process. First, you’ll be transported to the edge of the fjord, where the group will board a speed-ferry* that will transport you into the Lysefjord. Along the way, steep mountain walls towering hundreds of meters above the fjord will emerge. You’ll pass waterfalls, abandoned farms, and the famous Preikestolen cliff, which towers 604 meters above sea-level. Once ashore in Lysebotn, you’ll be driven to the trailhead at Øygardstøl.

Before the crowds of tourists have begun to arrive, you’ll be well on your way up to the Kjeragbolten boulder. During the 2.5-hour hike, you’ll encounter 3 periods of steep climbing interspersed with 2 shallow valleys. Once you reach the edge of the mountain’s plateau, while standing on a 1000-meter-high cliff, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the 42-kilometer-long Lysefjord. If you dare (and conditions allow), you may stand atop Kjeragbolten, which hangs 984 meters above the fjord. While atop the mountain plateau, you’ll be given time to relax while eating lunch near the boulder.

After the lunch break, your guide will lead you back down to Øygardstøl, which takes about 3 hours. On the way back to Stavanger, which takes about 2.5 hours, you will be driven through the municipality of Sirdal and over a mountain pass where you’ll experience a barren, glacier-scoured landscape. You’ll also pass through a variety of dramatic landscapes including mountains, fjords, and bright green valleys.

PLEASE NOTE | On Saturdays, the speed ferry does not run and we must drive around the mountains. On Sundays, the trip’s itinerary is reversed: instead of at the start of the day, you’ll cruise through the Lysefjord during the afternoon, before traveling back to Stavanger.

The hike to Kjeragbolten is a demanding 6-hour, 11-kilometer (6.85 miles) trip with a total ascent of 800 meters (2,625 feet). It is suitable for adults who are in very good condition and have previous hiking experience. This time of the year, you should expect the possibility of snow conditions. As needed, your guide will provide you with hiking poles, spikes, and snowshoes.
