Degree of Difficulty
Book Outdoorlife Norway’s privately guided hike to Kjeragbolten and enjoy an intimate, hassle-free visit to one of Norway’s most visited natural icons. Get an introduction to the region’s barren, glacier-scoured landscapes while hiking on trails that have been upgraded by Nepalese Sherpas. Enjoy the exhilaration of standing on the mountain’s cliffside, nearly a kilometer above the Lysefjord.
Your journey to Kjeragbolten begins in the early-morning hours when your professional guide meets you at the pick-up location you chose during the booking process. First, you’ll be transported to the edge of the fjord, where the group will board a speed-ferry* before being transported into the Lysefjord. During the boat trip, you will pass abandoned farm sites, waterfalls, and the famous Preikestolen cliff, which towers 604 meters above the fjord. Once ashore in the village of Lysebotn, you’ll be driven to the Kjerag hike’s trailhead at Øygardstøl.
Before the crowds of tourists have begun to arrive, you’ll be well on your way up to the Kjeragbolten boulder. During the 2.5-hour hike, you’ll encounter 3 periods of steep climbing interspersed with 2 shallow valleys. Along the way, you’ll ascend 800 meters while enjoying views of the area’s surrounding mountains and the village of Lysebotn, which is situated at the innermost end of the Lysefjord. Once you reach the edge of the mountain’s plateau, while standing atop a 1000-meter-high cliff, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the 42-kilometer-long Lysefjord. Cliff-side, you’ll have plenty of time to rest and enjoy your packed lunch. If you’re among the brave, and conditions permit, you’ll have the opportunity to stand atop the Kjeragbolten boulder, which is suspended a heart-stopping 984 meters above the fjord.
After the break, your guide will lead you back down to Øygardstøl, which will take about 2 hours. On the way back to Stavanger, which takes about 2.5 hours, you will be driven through the municipality of Sirdal and over a mountain pass where you’ll experience a barren, glacier-scoured landscape. You’ll also pass through a variety of other dramatic landscapes including mountains, fjords, and bright green valleys.
PLEASE NOTE | Transportation by speed-ferry is included in the tour when pick-up time is no later than 6:00am. On Saturdays, the speed ferry does not run and we must drive around the mountains. On Sundays, the trip’s itinerary is reversed: instead of at the start of the day, you’ll cruise through the Lysefjord during the afternoon, before traveling back to Stavanger.
The hike to Kjeragbolten is a demanding 5.5-hour, 11-kilometer (6.85 miles) trip with a total ascent of 800 meters (2,625 feet). It is suitable for adults who are in very good condition and have previous hiking experience.

Are you up for an unforgettable hiking adventure? Avoid the crowds by hiking with a guide in near-solitude while encountering out-of-this-world views of Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) and the Lysefjord – which only few have seen.
Hike to Pulpit Rock during the early-morning twilight hours – before the crowds of tourists have even begun to make their way up the trail. After the hike, enjoy breakfast / lunch at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge, which is located at the base of the hiking trail.
Witness the magic of autumn’s shifting colors and Norway’s crisp and cool mountain air while hiking in near solitude. Snow, when present, contrasts splendidly with the flame-colored foliage. Join us on a guided hike to the Kjeragbolten boulder before the season comes to a close.
