Tour Description

Join Outdoorlife Norway on an early-morning summer hike and visit to one of Norway’s most visited natural icons – Kjeragbolten. Relax and savour the views during a boat trip into the Lysefjord*. Hike in small groups on trails that have been upgraded by Nepalese Sherpas, and enjoy the exhilaration of standing atop the boulder before the crowds of tourists arrive.

Tour Itinerary
Your journey to Kjeragbolten begins in the early-morning hours when your professional guide meets you at the pick-up location you chose during the booking process. First, you’ll be transported to the edge of the fjord, where the group will board a speed-ferry* before being transported into the Lysefjord. During the boat trip, you will pass abandoned farm sites, waterfalls, and the famous Preikestolen cliff, which towers 604 meters above the fjord. Once ashore in the village of Lysebotn, you’ll be driven to the Kjerag hike’s trailhead at Øygardstøl.

Before the crowds of tourists have begun to arrive, you’ll be well on your way up to the Kjeragbolten boulder. During the 2.5-hour hike, you’ll encounter 3 periods of steep climbing interspersed with 2 shallow valleys. The final stretch leading up to Kjeragbolten is relatively flat and will allow you to focus more on the experience. Once you reach the edge of the mountain’s plateau, while standing atop a 1000-meter-high cliff, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the 42-kilometer-long Lysefjord. If you dare (and conditions allow), you may stand atop Kjeragbolten, which is wedged into a crevice 984 meters above the fjord. You will be given plenty of time to relax while eating lunch near the boulder.

After the break, your guide will lead you back down to Øygardstøl, which will take about 2 hours. On the way back to Stavanger, which takes about 2.5 hours, you will be driven through the municipality of Sirdal and over a mountain pass where you’ll experience a barren, glacier-scoured landscape. You’ll also pass through a variety of other dramatic landscapes including mountains, fjords, and bright green valleys.

PLEASE NOTE | On Saturdays, the speed ferry does not run and we must drive around the mountains. On Sundays, the trip’s itinerary is reversed: instead of at the start of the day, you’ll cruise through the Lysefjord during the afternoon, before traveling back to Stavanger.

The hike to Kjeragbolten is a demanding 5.5-hour, 11-kilometer (6.85 miles) trip with a total ascent of 800 meters (2,625 feet). It is suitable for adults who are in very good condition and have previous hiking experience.
