Tour Description

Do you have a limited amount of time in Stavanger but would like to experience Norway’s pristine nature and unique cultural heritage in a single day? Join Outdoorlife Norway on a private tour into Fjord Norway’s glacier-carved mountains, enjoy a tranquil 2.5-hour hike to the highest waterfall in southwestern Norway, and visit some of the region’s unique cultural landmarks. Månafossen waterfall, which is fed by the Mån river, creates a beautiful veil of mist and rainbows as plunges 92 meters into the canyon below.

When guests’ schedule permits, this tour includes:

  • Stop at Gloppedalsura Scree
  • Stop at Byrkjedalstunet Craft & Candle Factory
  • Stop at the viking monument ‘Sverd i fjell’

Tour Itinerary
Your outdoor experience will begin when your private guide picks you up in Stavanger. During the hour-long drive into the mountains, your guide will navigate through a variety of landscapes, including pastures, meadows, green valleys, and fjords. Once at the trailhead, you’ll be briefed before starting your 2.5-hour hike. The first leg of the hike, up to the waterfall, takes approximately 45 minutes, and is steep at times. Stairs made of wood and locally sourced stone pave the way, helping to make the hike less difficult. Your guide will maintain a relaxed pace up the trail, and then give you ample time to enjoy the beauty of Månafossen.

After the rest, if time allows, you’ll continue hiking upstream to visit the green valley of Fidjadal, which takes approximately 45 minutes (one-way). There, you’ll take another short break at the deserted mountain farm of Mån, which was inhabited until 1915. It’s a great place to enjoy a warm drink and a snack while taking in the serenity of the Norwegian wilderness. After the break, your guide will lead you back down to the trailhead.

Your guide will then transport you to Byrkjedalstunet, which has been described as a miniature version of Norway. The site includes a charming country hotel, a restaurant that serves traditional Norwegian cuisine, and a small-scale candle factory that also serves as an outlet for local artisans. You’ll have an opportunity to purchase traditional, hand-made arts & crafts, artisanal foods, wool designer wear, and carved wood souvenirs, amongst other treasures. This portion of the tour lasts about 30 minutes.

Just a few minutes up the road, your guide will transport you to Gloppedalsura, which is one of Northern Europe’s largest screes. Formed about 10,000 years ago as the last ice age ended, it consists of a 100-meter-thick layer of huge (up to house-sized) boulders. During the Nazi invasion in 1940, Gloppedalsura was used as a natural defensive position by Norwegian soldiers. Here, you’ll take a short break before starting the 1-hour drive back to Stavanger. Your adventure will conclude with a stop at the ‘Sverd i fjell’ viking monument, just outside of Stavanger, where (legend says) the viking king Harald Fairhair’s triumph in battle resulted in Norway becoming one kingdom.

This is an easy to moderately-demanding 2.5-hour, ~3 km (~1.9 miles) hike with a total ascent of just over 200 meters (650 feet). It is suitable for participants who are in general good condition, with some (basic) hiking experience.

Preikestolen Hike "Off the Beaten Track"

Are you up for an unforgettable hiking adventure? Avoid the crowds by hiking with a guide in near-solitude while encountering out-of-this-world views of Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) and the Lysefjord – which only few have seen.

Preikestolen Sunrise Hike

Hike to Pulpit Rock during the early-morning twilight hours – before the crowds of tourists have even begun to make their way up the trail. After the hike, enjoy breakfast / lunch at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge, which is located at the base of the hiking trail.

Kjerag Autumn Hike

Witness the magic of autumn’s shifting colors and Norway’s crisp and cool mountain air while hiking in near solitude. Snow, when present, contrasts splendidly with the flame-colored foliage. Join us on a guided hike to the Kjeragbolten boulder before the season comes to a close.
