Jørpeland, a small coastal village about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north-east of Stavanger, is the prefect starting point for marine-based adventures. Nestled into the region’s urban fjord coastline, it’s in close proximity to the islands, islets, and coves of the North Sea, as well as the mighty 42-kilometer (26-mile) – long Lysefjord.
Join our partner, Fjordexpedition, for a day-long fjord kayaking adventure, and experience tranquil coastal scenery while learning about the cultural and natural history of the Lysefjord. Experience fishing and foraging for food in our pristine waters, learn how to prepare a traditional Norwegian fish soup, and enjoy the fruits of your labors while relaxing on one of the region’s small beaches.
Upon meeting your guide at Fjordexpedition’s office, you’ll be given a short information and safety briefing. Your adventure will begin with a quick stop at the local grocery store, where you’ll learn which ingredients are needed to make a traditional Norwegian fish soup. Your guide will make sure to stock up on everything needed for a delicious campfire dinner. From there, you’ll load everything into kayaks and set out on the water.
During the tour, you’ll paddle along Jørpeland’s coastline, exploring its many islets and islands. While paddling in calm waters, you’ll be able to catch glimpses of marine wildlife, including birds, sea creatures, and the occasional seal. Along the way, your guide will teach you how to fish and forage for edible ingredients along the coastline. Weather and luck permitting, you’ll catch/gather enough food for the evening’s meal.
After paddling for 2.5 – 3.5 hours, your guide will navigate your group to a small beach where you’ll build a fire and learn how to prepare a traditional Norwegain fish soup. After dinner, your guide will treat you to the traditional Norwegian sweet known as lefse: soft, sweet potato flatbread filled with butter, sugar, and cinnamon. After dessert, you’ll paddle back to your starting point in the Jørpeland harbor.
The tour ends at the quay/harbor in Jørpeland between 19:00 and 21:00 (7:00pm – 9:00pm).
