Are you looking for an ultimate once-in-a-lifetime hiking adventure? Have you dreamed about visiting Norway’s spectacular fjords, but have a limited amount of time?  Experience three of Fjord Norway’s most iconic natural wonders in just 5 days. Journey through the region’s scenic countryside and join professionally-guided hikes to Trolltunga, Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), and Kjerag.

10,000 years ago, the last ice age ended and massive glaciers scraped their way from the mountain tops down toward sea level. In the process, Norway’s rugged landscapes, most notably its fjords, were uncovered. Some of the world’s most spectacular outdoor scenery can be enjoyed from atop Preikestolen, Trolltunga, and Kjerag, all of which are located deep within Norway’s rugged wilderness. The iconic locations also share the distinction of being three of Norway’s most popular outdoor tourist attractions.

Trolltunga, or the troll’s tongue, is a long rock that juts out from a cliffside, 700 meters above Ringedalsvatnet lake. During the Trolltunga Classic Hike, guests hike the 26-kilometer-long trail while experiencing some of the rawest nature found in all of Fjord Norway. Along the way, visitors pass through a variety of landscapes including forests and barren, glacier-scoured mountaintops.

Preikestolen, which clings 604 meters above sea-level, is a 25×25 meter rock plateau, offering panoramic views of the Lysefjord and its surrounding mountains. While the vast majority of visitors hike to Preikestolen along the main trail during daytime hours, our signature sunrise hike allows guests to experience the beauty of the Lysefjord in near-solitude. Hike to Preikestolen during twilight hours and catch the sun rising over the Lysefjord before the crowds of tourists have even begun to make their way up the trail.

Kjerag’s famous boulder is a glacial rock that is wedged in a mountain crevasse, 984 meters above the Lysefjord. Cruise and enjoy the spectacular Lysefjord on our early-morning Kjerag Beat the Crowds Hike. During the hike to the boulder, you’ll encounter 3 periods of steep climbing interspersed with 2 shallow valleys, and cross a mountain plateau. If you’re among the brave, you’ll have the opportunity to stand atop the Kjerag boulder.

Our professional guides are trained to safely maneuver rapidly-changing weather and trail conditions, and carry with them all necessary navigation, safety, and first-aid equipment. During the hikes, they will share stories about local natural and cultural history.

Between hikes, travel by car/bus through the Norwegian countryside, and enjoy a variety of landscapes including meadows, lakes, narrow valleys, mountains, and fjords.

From there, you’ll continue on a marked trail up the mountain to Gryteskar, where you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the Folgefonna glacier and the area’s barren, glacier-scoured mountaintops. Before the hike, you’ll be given a short briefing at the trailhead. Your adventure will begin under the cover of night, where you’ll use headlamps while following the main/marked trail. Hiking through the hushed silence of the night is an experience in itself. Though wildlife is usually shy around humans, it’s almost a certainty that they’ll all be awake, alert, and observing you from behind the old trees and scattered boulders that surround the trail. While the creatures of the night watch, your guide will lead you up through the shifting terrain, which includes bogs, forests, and glacier-scoured mountains.

After approximately 2.5 hours of hiking, and just before the sun rises over the horizon, you’ll reach the Preikestolen plateau. After finding a comfortable place to relax, you’ll watch as the first beams of sunlight illuminate the Lysefjord’s steep mountain walls. While relaxing, you’ll have ample time to take photos and enjoy a warm beverage and snack at the cliffside. Long before the first tourist-packed busses arrive from Stavanger, you’ll be on your way back down the trail to conclude your unique hiking adventure with a well-deserved breakfast / lunch at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge.

Arrival time in Bergen****
Monday – Friday | 15:00 (3:00 PM)
Saturday – Sunday | 16:40 (4:40 PM)

Your journey to Kjerag begins early-morning when your professional nature guide picks you up. While being transported to the edge of the fjord, which takes about 1 hour, you’ll be able to catch glimpses of some of Norway’s stunning landscapes. Upon arrival at the shore of the Høgsfjord, you’ll board a speed-ferry.** The cruise will transport you into the Lysefjord where you will pass waterfalls, abandoned farms, and the famous Preikestolen cliff, which towers 604 meters above sea-level. Once ashore, you’ll be driven through 26 hairpin turns along the (one and only!) road from the village of Lysebotn up to the Sirdal mountains and then onward to the Kjerag trail-head.

Before the crowds of tourists have begun to arrive, you’ll be well on your way up to the Kjerag boulder. During the 2.5-hour hike to the boulder, you’ll encounter 3 periods of steep climbing interspersed with 2 shallow valleys. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of the village of Lysebotn, which is situated at the head of the Lysefjord. The final 2 kilometers leading up to the Kjerag boulder are relatively flat and will allow you to focus more on the spectacular nature around you. Once you reach the edge of the mountain’s plateau, while standing on a 1000-meter-high cliff, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the 42-kilometer-long Lysefjord. Cliff-side, you’ll have plenty of time to rest and enjoy your packed lunch. If you’re among the brave, you’ll have the opportunity to stand atop the Kjerag boulder.

After the lunch break, your guide will lead you back down to the Eagle’s Nest, which takes approximately 2 hours. On the drive back to Stavanger, the guide will navigate over a mountain pass through the municipality of Sirdal. You’ll pass through a barren, glacier-scoured landscape that many experience as being moon-like.

⇒ Total hiking distance/ascent | 5.5 km (each way) / 800 meters
⇒ Kjerag Hike Includes |
Fjord cruise** Professional guide with navigation, safety, and emergency equipment – Necessary equipment (snow spikes, poles) – Hot beverages and a snack during the hike

After the Kjerag hike, you will be driven back to Stavanger (approximate arrival time – 17:00 (5:00pm)***).

NOTES
*Please see ‘Prices / Upgrades’ tab for more information.
**On Saturdays, the speed ferry does not run and we will drive around the mountains. On Sundays, the trip’s itinerary is reversed: instead of at the start of the day, you’ll cruise through the Lysefjord during the afternoon, before traveling back to Stavanger.
***This is an approximation which depends drop-off location, weather, and other factors. Please do not book onward travel for the same evening.
****Please ensure that you have at least 3 hours between arrival in Bergen and any onward travel arrangements.
