Your journey to Flørli begins when your guide picks you up in Stavanger city-center (click on “Duration & Pick-up Details above for specific information). While being transported to the fjord, which takes about 1 hour, you’ll be able to catch glimpses of Norway’s stunning landscapes. Upon arrival at the shore of the Høgsfjord, you’ll board a passenger ferry, which will cruise into the Lysefjord, where steep mountain walls towering hundreds of meters above the fjord emerge.
During the 1 hour, 45 min. fjord crossing to Flørli, the ferry will start-off by navigating under a suspension bridge that spans the mouth of the Lysefjord. The cruise will transport you further into the Lysefjord and where you will pass waterfalls, abandoned farms, and the famous Preikestolen cliff, which towers 604 meters above sea-level, before arriving at Flørli.
Flørli, which has been inhabited on and off since at least the seventeenth century, is beautifully located amidst 1000-meter-high mountains along the southern shore of the Lysefjord. In 1916, construction began on a hydro-electric power plant, which, from 1918 until 1950, supplied electricity to the city of Stavanger. At its peak (1917), 142 people were employed at the plant; quite an impressive number considering that only 13 permanent residences were ever built near the site.
Once at Flørli, your guide will lead you up the 4,444 wooden steps that parallel old water pipes which, at first glance, seem to be precariously clinging to the mountainside. Reaching an elevation of 750 meters above sea-level, Flørli is the longest wooden staircase in the world. On the way up, you’ll enjoy jaw-dropping views of the Lysefjord and surrounding mountains. Once you’ve reached the mountaintop, your guide will lead you along a trail through the forest and on to the remains of the Flørli village.
This is a demanding 4-hour, ~6 km (round-trip) hike with a total ascent of just over 750 meters. Following the hike back down to sea-level, you will visit the Flørli 4,444 Power Café, which is located inside the historic hydro-power hall built in 1916. If time allows, you will have the opportunity to visit the exhibition in the control room, and learn more about Flørli’s unique history. You will then be transported back to Stavanger on a high-speed ferry, which takes about an hour.
The tour ends in Stavanger at approximately* 17:30 (5:30pm)
